gaming Rumor: Nintendo ceasing production of Wii U later this year.

Okay, I am going to be completely honest here: This will piss. Me. Off.

Not only would this be one of the shortest console cycles that Nintendo has ever had, it will show that Nintendo just doesn't care. I love the 3DS, I do, but the Wii U, if it ceases this year, that means it will have survived 4 YEARS. In contrast, the Xbox 360 has lasted over 10 YEARS and it is STILL GOING. Nintendo, I think, gets too many free passes. At some point after this, the services will be shut down on that console, forcing everyone to buy the NX or whatever it will be. Just like the useless Wii.

Not gonna buy the NX. I bought the Wii U last year and if this turns out to be true, I will be selling it and not bothering with the NX. It will probably be yet again another third party disaster that will last another 4 years. Yay.

Oh... Well, I would certainly try NX. I got really disappointed with Sony, after their plans to make a PS 4.5, and Xbox One's controller just seems to be too heavy and massive for my hands.

Sorry to tell you guys, but if anything gets reported from Nikkei, it's more than likely to be very official. Therefore, it's not a rumour by a longshot.

I knew this was gonna happen eventually. I'd better save up for the upcoming NX then. *sigh* smh

I just hope Nintendo is making the right decision here. Especially if the general public today STILL cannot tell the difference between the Wii and Wii U, then that is understandable (yet sad at the same time because of Nintendo's poor marketing strategy for it).

It's life was short, but in a business and sales perspective, I can understand why the Wii U will cease production later this year due to the poor sales of the Wii U. Even the GameCube outsold the Wii U for crying out loud! 12 million units for the Wii U compared to the 21 million for the GameCube. Now that's sad, and it won't improve anytime soon due to the general public loosing interest in it (and also don't forget that the name of the console "Wii U" is also to blame, for confusing the general consumer at the beginning). :(

Even if I do like Nintendo in general, that doesn't mean I shouldn't criticize them to help them improve for the future. They do listen to the consumer (the Club Nintendo surveys were one of the ways to give feedback to them).

Shokio here said it right, with honest criticism:

There are so many rumors going around that I'm not sure what's really going to happen. Personally, I'd only be interested in a move towards the NX if it's a console revival strategy for Nintendo. For years now I've kept saying the same thing about the Wii U. It has no hard-hitting titles that make people want to buy it - or perhaps I should say to get ENOUGH people to buy it. The game library is weak in my opinion and if Nintendo had invested in top-title games it would have done better without a doubt.  >_>

Launch the NX with a new Metroid Prime series, Twilight Princess 2, Pokemon Stadium, Smash Bros, Monster Hunter, etc. If so, I'll get it and so will a lot of other people. I have to say, though, that my confidence in Nintendo's strategy is very low.

Another thing they need to do is stop relying on just first party software. Nintendo does make some great games, definitely, but without third party support, your system won't last long. The Xbox One and PS4 both have had pretty decent third party offerings so far and I have so many games on the One, I can't even count them. The Wii U? It is a dust collector for me now. The Wii suffered the same exact fate yet Nintendo did WORSE with the Wii U. How does that instill any confidence in anyone thinking of buying new systems from them? It doesn't for me, that's for sure.

Even if they actually do focus on third parties this time around, which they probably won't, they've already lost me anyways.

Assuming this is true, is it really any surprise, the Wii U costs about 288 to manufacture, and they retail around 299.99, the margins are slim if any at all, and their total console sales are poor in comparison to their competitors. Ceasing production near or at the release of NX would make economical sense for the company.

So I wonder... What does this mean for half life 3- ur, I mean the Zelda title? Are they going to cancel? Move it to the NX? Or will they deliver at the end of the year? So much potential for violent backlash with this title if cancelled or half baked...

For myself, I've already decided not to buy the NX. I was an early buyer of the Wii U and Nintendo hasn't earned my confidence that the NX will be any different, no matter what hardware or gimmick they'll add to it. There's also the paper mario thing, which I don't think I'll be able to forgive for a long time.

Well, I'm kind of just a PC gamer now anyways. So I suppose anything with consoles and handhelds has little effect on me to begin with. For me, it's a matter of how much time I have. Even if there were really good consoles and games out, I have too many really good PC games I haven't even gotten around to yet and so many hundreds of hours of gametime to spend in them that I'll never have an opening for other mediums. Case in point, I've been wanting to play Skyrim for a while and there's hundreds if not thousands of hours in that game alone. Add mods and...well...

Nintendo's strategy has been a house of cards for a while now. The original Wii only sold because it was marketed with a cheap gimmick, despite being shunned by any third party developer worth a damn. The Wii U continued to be shunned by developers, but changed to a less marketable gimmick anyway.

This may sound callous, but I wouldn't miss them if their consoles went the way of Sega.

So Nintendo is going to phase out the Wii U, probably getting ready for NX. This is on Nintendo now, if they fuck up with NX, I don't see them making consoles for much longer. What really needs to happen is that Nintendo needs to embrace 3rd-party developers, and stop with their draconian stance on their games being posted on YouTube. Even an evil company like EA doesn't care about their games being shown on YouTube as they see it as free advertising.

The next 2-3 years are going to make or break Nintendo.

Some people think that Nintendo should have abandoned the Wii U well before this, and some people seemingly want it to hang around twice as long in order to justify their purchase.  Nintendo can't possibly please both sides.  They hung on for four years despite a slow-growing (and comparatively small) user base and everyone and their brother panning the console from pretty much the get-go.  No matter what they do, a good chunk of their customers are going to be dissatisfied.

I've had my white basic model since around launch, and the thing's loaded with Virtual Console games.  I'll get the NX as soon as I can afford it, and I'll keep my Wii U as a retro gaming machine.  Hopefully the NX will somewhat redeem Nintendo in the eyes of a fanbase that's always miserable.

If they are willing though. Their policies like restricted hardware and bureaucratic nonsense worked as a pinch for third-parties and others.

Japan, where Yo-Kai Watch's second movie has more success than The Force Awakens :umad:

I hate to say it, but unless the NX has some killer launch titles, both first and third party, it's most likely going to bomb worse than the Wii U. Fewer people will be willing to give Nintendo the benefit of the doubt this time.

I highly doubt it'll stop production, even without those other two articles saying that it won't. Does anyone know about the Virtual Boy? That was worse and did worse then the Wii U, and Nintendo was perfectly fine. Also, a few of you seem to think the Wii was terrible. Do you just not like moving or something? Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort were awesome, and I've got a huge idea for a sequel to both.

The Rumor and report is still denied if you guys haven't read the sources we provided. The question is if nintendo were to cease production on wii-u system before the NX release, then how are they gonna make money? I know that kind of answer was my friend told me that the amiibos are printing cash as we speak and they are the only hardware manufacturer that's in the black.
