gaming Why does everyone hate Sonic 06?

I would honestly like to know why everybody hates Sonic The Hedgehog(2006). I have read a lot about it online and watched a play-through on YouTube of the entire game and although it does have glitches and the romance between Sonic and Elise may be a bit unusual, I still can't find one GOOD reason why this game is marked as "the worst video-game ever made".

Here is a video that outlines some GOOD things about the game:

It's a broken, glitchy, unfinished mess with a terrible story and borderline unplayable gameplay and levels and yet was treated as the celebration 15th of the anniversary of the Sonic franchise.

Say what you will about Sonic Boom, but at least that came with a solid cartoon

It's glitchy to high heaven, the game is pretty broken and a lot of things just don't work right, the story is total garbage, even beyond the romance with Elise, the level design is very slow, monotonous and boring. Even when it's not glitching it's just uninteresting to play, not to mention the load times are atrocious and take forever. The game is ugly and takes itself oddly seriously, etc...

It has a few good things, I like the music, Silver's gameplay is a neat idea that could have worked in a better game, and some of the glitches and cutscenes are so bad they're good, but other than that I can't think of anything I enjoyed about it. It was a glitchy, dull, stupid mess.

The biggest reason why Sonic 06 is considered a bad game is the way the SEGA treated it. When they made the last-minute change of releasing the game quickly so that they can make more money on Christmas sales, it felt like a complete letdown for many Sonic fans and shows how greedy SEGA can get. What could've been a wonderful game celebrating the series would later turn out to be a broken, glitchy mess with a bad story and confusing controls. And the reason why this is the way it is only because SEGA wanted money. That's a terrible way of treating your fans and your 15th anniversary of your most successful franchise if you ask me.

The game was rushed from a technical standpoint and generally poorly designed. The result was a game plagued with glitches, empty levels, a terrible story, and incomplete game play elements. One of the most obvious shortcomings comes in the form of Tails's levels: he literally throws a placeholder item (the fake rings box) as his primary attack. Additionally, the storylines divided among Sonic, Shadow, and Silver mostly include repeated levels -- basically filler content. All told, it's an awful game.

Then take into account the hype. The designers and programmers had to get the game out by the end of 2006 in order to coincide with the 15th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog. I knew a number of Sonic fans who admitted to being excited for Sonic 06, thinking it would be an updated 3D version of the first Sonic the Hedgehog. The bizarre story (e.g., Sonic is paired up with a teenage human princess who was never relevant in any Sonic lore) also threw a lot of fans for a loop. So both the story and the gameplay were lackluster, to say the least.

A few players, like DarkspinesSonic on YouTube, have managed to master it, making the game appear almost playable enough to be fun. But Sonic 06's "best" features require breaking the game. Just scour YouTube for 15 for Sonic 06 playthroughs and bugs; you're bound to find out why it's such an infamous game.

Having played it for about an hour in the past, and having watched the full playthrough of it by Retsupurae, moreso for their commentary rather than interest in the game, I wouldn't say it's the worst game of all time. Definitely not, there are far worse.

However, it does look terrible. Tons of technical errors, nonsensical story moments, a great number of tedious gameplay sections, repeated levels, and some really bizarre stuff, like the Hedgehog X Teen Human Princess love story going on...The developers were also put on a time constraint, as far as I know, so the development process couldn't have been much fun either, to say the least.

Also, wow, didn't expect to see a "Top X" video be almost an hour long. :P

the Hedgehog X Teen Human Princess love story

I disagree with all those cries of, "BESTIALITY!!!", largely because it's extremely hypocritical if you remember all the Sonic fangirls throughout the world.

However, it's definitely still stupid, especially when they end up reenacting the signature scene from Sleeping Beauty.

I vividly remember playing the demo for this game way back when and even then I thought it was abysmal. The gameplay is so incredibly twitchy, even for a Sonic game and it all felt unresponsive in many aspects. The game's visual parts didn't look too bad for the time, it sure was Sonic in HD, but the gameplay was nearly broken. I also remember there being some abysmal lip-syncing.

The game is quite simply TRASH. Bugs and glitches, both benign and gamebreaking, abound. Sometimes your character will get glued to a wall, other times he'll be sent flying off into space with no hope of return. The voice acting, particularly for the titular character, is absolutely atrocious. Load screens are everywhere and often are immediately followed by another load screen. At best, controls are clunky, and at worst they seem to actively work against you. In all honesty it feels as though all the time, money, and effort went into the first half of the opening cutscene, which is somewhat okay. But then Sonic shows up and the letdown is immediate, you know from that point on that you are in for an incredibly shitty experience.

This is not to say that the game holds no entertainment value, because amazingly it can be quite fun. Hovever, it is best experienced in a Mystery Science Theater 3000 atmosphere. That is, playing it with a group of friends and making fun of it the whole time. Playing it alone is an exercise in misery.

tl;dr: bad coding, bad voice acting, bad controls, too many load screens, a horrible letdown of a game fit only for joke fodder.

... The insane amount of glitches? I mean most of the levels you end up glitching out of the level so quickly. Not to mention the abysmal story which is retconned at the very end making the entire game pointless.

I could go on, but I don't have time to write a novel.

Well, coming form someone who has never played the game, I can't exactly say say that I hate it.

But I have heard a lot of why it gets all of it's hate and criticisms.

For starters the game was majorly rushed and is basically unfinished which is way there is an insane amount of glitches throughout.

The controls are unresponsive and really annoying, Elise isn't a good or interesting character, and the story isn't well written.

Watching the game and playing the game are two different things. People who play it on Youtube aren't telling you about how hard it is to get Sonic to do a simple jump. How even the slightest twist on the joy pad can make you go careening to the side missing a platform entirely.

People who play the game on video have also likely played it enough to work around the glitches so you don't see as many.

You can definitely see what they were trying to do with the game but they don't realize any of it fully. I certainly love the game for what it's trying to do but I've yet to bring myself to replay it because of how hard it is to control. There's times where Sonic will literally fall through the ground just because he clipped a bump in the road wrong. Avoiding those sorts of situations makes it very hard on the player.

Sonic x Elise isn't bestiality though. The only people who think so are nomoids who don't actually know what bestiality is or why it's illegal in the first place. It's also not the first human girlfriend Sonic has ever had. Plus, you know, it's weird that people make a fuss over this but not over Roger Rabbit and Jessica.

I dont get the hate.

First time i played it and instantly became the greatest Sonic Game of all time for me.

I mean, the Cut Scenes were great and had Final Fantasy Quality, the characters looked way more realistic ( i mean Dr Eggman for example ) the whole Story felt more mature.

I really cant understand the Hate. Really. I tried, but...i dont hate it, i really like it.

I like that the game was long and had 3 different Sections, i liked the new Characters.

And its still easily my most favorite game. All the older Sonic Games were just like, Oh no, dr Eggman turned everything into Robots again...oh no...yeah...you have to stop him again, here we give you a new character...but not really any dialog or anything that would give you a hint as to why the new character exists.

Well damn, now you have to find the Chaos Emeralds...AGAIN ! Oh yeah, you also cant save and if you buck up one time, well, screw you !

Bad Ending for you !

Like seriously, i have never beaten any of the old Sonic Games since you have to find the 6 or 7 or 8 or whatever Chaos Emeralds and if you screw up once. its over, you have to start again. And again...and again.

The old Sonic Games were horrible and frustrating, with no real Story or Characters.

Than i played Sonic Heroes, the first i actually enjoyed, even though the Story was almost still the same and nothing special, unless you get the Twist Ending, which you can only get, by finding the damn Chaos Emeralds again...god, i hate Sonic Games for that!

Why is it always soooo hard to get these Emeralds???

I cant even get the real ending because of that.

Wouldnt it be for the save function of the Sonic Mega Collection Plus, i would have never beaten the older Games since its frustrating.

Than i played Shadow the Hedgehog, the first Sonic Game i could actually beat. It had an interesting and more original Storyline than any of the other Games i played and it was fun, since you didnt had to play frustrating bonus levels over and over again, just to get the " Real " ending.

And guess what? The first Sonic Game i enjoyed, was the first one that Sonic Fans actually disliked.

I was just like : "Whaaat? "   " How? "  :wau:  Every game before this was frustrating and now the first game i actually enjoyed is hated, nice.

I just ad that to the list of Fandoms, in which i seem to have the complete opposite opinion, i should have. ( and let me tell you, this list is very long  :maud:  )

Than came Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 and as i said, i really liked it, the cutscenes were amazing and better than everything before, the Storyline was more interesting and had 3 different Parts and if i remember correctly, you didnt had to play frustrating Bonus Levels again.

It was my favorite Sonic Game of all time.

And yeah, a few years after i learned, that this was the most hated game of the entire franchise...

And this game is my favorite of all of them...

I think i just have a Talent for having the wrong Opinion.  >_>

Edit : I havent played the " Adventure Games ", so i have no idea how they are. I only played all the very old ones, the ones i mentioned and Sonic Unleashed. Even though i was tiny bit disappointed with Sonic Unleashed, since it felt like a step back from the more serious tone that the 2006 Version had. But as far a i know, Sonic Unleashed is also kinda hated by the Fanbase so...

It's nice to see that someone shares my opinion on this game and I don't think you're opinion is wrong, everyone has their own opinions you and I just happen to have different opinions than everybody else.

Personally I liked the game. Sure they could've held out for a few months and that would've been a smarter move for the game glitch wise and control wise, but overall I had fun playing it. That's just my opinion though. While glitches are indeed annoying and sometimes the levels drug on I still enjoyed it.

I'm right there with ya sister, if they had held back the release was just a few more months to fix any more problems, then maybe people wouldn't hate it so much. Edited by Josiah_E
