music Most Overrated/ Underrated Albums/Bands Ever

Cynic

Recommended Posts

Hello, everybody. My name is Cynic, and music is a very integral part of my life. I really don't know what I'd do without it, and I like to hear other people's opinions on music. Such as, who do you think is horribly overrated/shamefully underrated? Alternatively, which albums do you think are underrated/overrated?

Here's the Urban Dictionary definitions of over/underrated: Overrated: A term used to describe something that gets more hype and credit than it's actually worth. Underrated: Something or someone that deserves much more respect than people will allow

So, what albums/bands/arists/genres do you ponies think deserves more credit or gets too much credit?

Well, when it comes to a lot of bands that I like, their more popular songs are always the ones that aren't even that good and I think those songs that are more popular are overrated. This is especially true with Avenged Sevenfold. A lot of their newer stuff (mostly stuff from their self-titled album) is really overrated, and a lot of their older stuff (especially the Waking the Fallen and City of Evil albums) is underrated in my opinion.

In fact, here is a list of some A7X songs I think are highly underrated:

Chapter Four

Eternal Rest

I Won't See You Tonight pt.1 & 2

Reminissions

Second Heartbeat

And All Things Will End

Sidewinder

The Wicked End

Strength of the World

M.I.A.

Streets

Blinded in Chains

Trashed and Scattered

Here are some A7X songs I think are overrated:

Afterlife

Almost Easy

Bat Country

So Far Away

Scream

Dear God

Unholy Confessions

Welcome to the Family

A Little Piece of Heaven

Nightmare

Also, pop music like Justin Bieber and stuff is wayyyyy more popular than it should be...

Underrated: Thrice and the new Linkin Park stuff. I'm one of the only people where I live that knows of Thrice (at least as far as I know), and everyone seems to hate Linkin Park's new stuff, just because it strays away from their whiny nu metal days. Shame, you Linkin Park purists. Shame.

Overrated: Actually, pretty much every kind of pop music nowadays is totally overrated. And I'll tell you what, that's bullcrap. See, I could actually listen to pop music like back what Michael Jackson made, but that's because it was actually creative and compelling. Pop artists these days like Bieber and such are not only un-creative, but also un-compelling.

On a side note, I say "actually" a lot.

I completely agree with you on the new Linkin Park thing. I found A Thousand Suns and Minutes To Midnight much more enjoyable then Meteora and Hybrid Theory. Say, have you heard their new single, Burn It Down?

Burn It Down is WONDERFUL. It's like they're mixing the old with the new, creating a brand new amazing style.

I'm not a huge Linkin Park fan, but I like Meteora and Hybrid Theory stuff better than the new stuff

I'm probably gonna get a lot of hate for this, but I'm gonna be honest...

I think the Beatles are kind of overrated. Don't get me wrong, they were probably the best band of their time.

Overrated: Rap music. I hate it with a passion. Must I explain? Justin Bieber. Also, alot of music at the time is mindless and uncreative.

Underrated: I suppose the Black Keys. I love the Red Hot Chili Peppers too and don't see them getting alot of fans.

We need more bands like The Beatles.

I've heard good rap music, although I agree that a lot of it is terrible. Justin Bieber obviously is extremely overrated.

Oh god, you are gonna hate me so much for what I posted right above you >_>

Anyways, now for my contribution.

Underrated: In Flames' Reroute To Remain. Ask any In Flames purist about R2R, you'll probably get punched in the face. The album that preceeded it, Clayman, was them sort of trying to break away from the melodic death metal sound they helped create, however the death metal elements were still clearly present. Reroute To Remain essentially burned what was left of classic In Flames, implementing more clean vocals and more of a shriek as opposed to a growl-essentially, "selling out". But it still had what made In Flames: the guitar melodies. It wasn't until 2004's Soundtrack To Your Escape when they truly "sold out", replacing the guitar melodies with synthesizers. But it was still a great album! 2006's Come Clarity and all concurrent albums brought back the guitar melodies, however each new album they release contains less harsh vocals then the last.

Overrated: Everything on the radio, mainstream rap music (there is good rap music.), and dubstep.

Not a band, a artist named WinterWind-NS and he makes some awesome Trance like Tundra and Melodic Solstice; underrated I think.

*sigh*

I would complain about multiple things, but it seems you were just focused on the "alot of music at the time is mindless and uncreative" part. So I'll leave it at the fact that that was made in 2009. :

Things that are not dubstep is underrated in the electronica genre, or almost.

Correction: 1998.

Now back on topic: I think Slaughter Of The Bluegrass is incredibly underrated. They take classic melodic death metal songs and turn them into beautiful bluegrass.
