I don't do scoring or grading much, and when I review, I don't plug them in. But what the heck?

S1: B-

S2: B

S3: C-

S4: C+

S5: B+

Whole show: B

Season six has had some good episodes. Nothing mind-blowing, but nothing bad, either. Too early to grade at this point.

As for FIM, it's definitely a really good show, but there are other better cartoons out there right now. Steven Universe, which I don't like due to preferences, is objectively better than FIM. But it has a lasting legacy for bronydom coming alive and spreading their love for the show and for jumpstarting a background theme from Pixar, hundreds of children's literature, and other great cartoons from the past: Good family work is best when they're accessible and loved by kids and adults alike.

And EQG:

EQG1: F (If I could, F-)

RR: D

2014 Holiday Special: F (Again, F- if I could)

FG: F

What does Steven Universe do better than MLP?

Steven Universe is targeted to an older audience than MLP, so you can't really compare the two. Steven Universe is also more adventure-oriented, while MLP is more slice of life.

If we're doing this by season and the films,

Season 1: 6.5/10

Season 2: 9/10

Season 3: 7/10

Season 4: 9.5/10

Season 5: 10/10

Season 6 (so far): 7/10

Show Average: ~9/10

Equestria Girls: 3/10

Rainbow Rocks: 6/10

Friendship Games: 4.5/10

Equestria Girls Average: 5/10

The show is personally one of my favorites, but as much as I hate to say it, my interest in the show has sort of been going down lately. While I don't feel the show's been going through seasonal rot or anything, it's really just that I haven't really been interested in S6, and there are not just cartoons, but things in general that I've been a lot more interested in as of lately. Even rewatching some of my favorite episodes from past seasons hasn't really "captured" me in the same way it did 1-2 years ago. It's kind of the reason why I haven't reviewed any S6 episodes past the premiere (plus me just going through personal things). Still, it's definitely in my Top 5 of all time and I definitely don't see myself getting completely out of it.

As for the Equestria Girls series.. eh. I wouldn't say I hate it, but I don't consider it anything above "just average/okay." The first was a mess, Rainbow Rocks was an improvement but at the same time was just okay, and Friendship Games, while I liked it at first, it's fairly mediocre.

@@VG_Addict, At least two components that SU does better than FIM are:

  1. More consistent story quality. In FIM, you have a good mediocre-to-terrible lineup of episodes. SU has a lot of good-to-great episodes.
  2. It deals with some mature themes better than FIM. Most notably in SU, gender identity and homosexuality. Even in eleven minutes, SU isn't afraid to explore themes and not pull back punches. FIM deals with mature themes, too, particularly in seasons four and five. Many of the FIM's best episodes, like Amending Fences, executes very strong, real themes. But sometimes they really screw them up

I also think Steven Universe has better animation. The animation in Steven Universe is GORGEOUS.

S1 8/10

S2 8.5/10

S3 6/10 (It'd have been much lower if it weren't for Sleepless in Ponyville, Keep Calm and Keep Calm and Flutter On)

S4 10

S5 10

I honestly find the latter seasons to be better and don't understand people talking about leaving the fandom or not being interested in the show anymore. I mean to each their own, but I loved the last couple of seasons and have high hopes for the current one.

The First EG movie ....3...being liberal here.

I haven't seen the others. No interest....though I love Sunset Shimmer's color scheme and wish that it had been used for Starlight Glimmer (though they'd have to change her name to fit her color scheme I think). Even though purple is my favorite color, there's far too much of it among main characters.

You know I'm not going to rate the individual seasons because i cannot be arsed.

So I will say this: I would score objectively (as in taking it's goals and strengths/weaknesses into account) score it as a 7.5/10.

What it has going for it is very endearing characters and interactions, and teaching morals through earnestness, sometimes cleverness, and some pretty decent development of those characters. What holds it back is being inconsistent with episode to episode quality, and it having to be written for young audiences in mind means it cannot be expected to be as mature or gutsy as a lot of other cartoons (or maybe that's just hasbro's decisions).

I generally agree with those 2 points, but looking back to when I watched SU, I remember hating the slice of life episodes. I really disliked the episodes where Steven was paired up with someone from beach city, it just wasn't interesting to me. The show's a lot better when it was focused on the development of the gems. Even in the "screwed up" episodes of FIM, at least it was lively and entertaining. Steven Universe can put me in a roller coaster of reactions, but unfortunately one of the most common is "sleepy".

FIM is my most watched kids cartoon in last 2 years and nothing change until now. My ranking for each season:

Season 1: B-

Season 2: A-

Season 3: C+

Season 4: B+

Season 5: B+

Maybe a lot of people will disagree with me, but I still call FIM a great kids show because I still treat it as a Kids show just like the 1st day I watched this show. If I treat it as family show, it just not that great but im glad that I dont. For me, entertainment value comes first, moral comes second, I can torelate episodes with bad morals/unfortunated implications as long as it fullfill the 1st priority , episodes with good moral or even good characterization but cannot fullfill the 1st one are the meh episode in my eyes (Mane Attraction for example).

Overall, FIM is an A kids show that I wont stop watching anytime soon

What does Steven Universe do better than MLP?

Steven Universe is targeted to an older audience than MLP, so you can't really compare the two. Steven Universe is also more adventure-oriented, while MLP is more slice of life.

It's a lot better with character progression, and especially better at redeeming antagonists, at least thus far. Though, the only antagonist to really get redeemed so far has been Peridot, so it may be a bit early to make the call. Still, I feel like the villain redemption on MLP is always rushed, and with Peridot, SU took its time better and felt more believable.

I think SU's backgrounds are prettier, and the instrumental BGM tracks are more creative than MLP's. I think its characters are more emotional, more real. It has more charm and heart, and feels more epic in scope. Still though, that's not so much a knock against MLP as it is a testament to how well-crafted SU is. MLP raises the bar high and is pretty difficult to beat, so the fact that imo SU does, shows how good SU is. I still think MLP is a very good show in its own right.

I absolutely love the Beach City residents, personally, and I think it was a wise decision to give them a lot of focus. It helps build a far richer world, and makes it all the more impactful whenever Beach City is threatened. I will agree the gems are more interesting and are where the show is at its best, but I would still consider the humans to be worthwhile and interesting.

Anyway, onto MLP seasons:

S1: 9/10

S2: 8/10

S3: 6/10

S4: 7/10

S5: 9/10

Overall: 8/10

EqG: 5/10

RR: 7/10

FG: 6/10

Overall: 6/10

It's too early to rank season 6 just yet, since my rankings are based on a good-to-bad episode ratio. Though I will say that season 6 is off to a good start.

Season 1: 9

Season 2: 9

Season 3: 7

Season 4: 9

Season 5: 3

Season 6: 5 atm

Total: 7

(Still cannot post -.-)

That sums it up. The newest seasons lowered the score and i even feel hesitant to call myself a true fan. Reminds me of the Simpsons.

Season 2 > Season 4 = Season 5 > Season 3 > Season 1 is my tentative ranking. Overall, ok/10. The fact that Season 5 scored so highly even though I frequently wasn't so keen on it is probably a sign of me losing interest in the show.

As for EQG, Friendship Games > Rainbow Rocks > Movie 1. In fact, I'd rate FG over RR by a pretty decent margin.

I'll give Season 1 and 2, 8/10.

Season 3,4&5 I would say 5/10.

I am enjoying the season 6 so far (minus the first two parts episode): 7/10

For Equestria girls, 3/10. The only part I enjoy in this story is The Twilight Win the Crown moment.

Rainbow Rocks 5/10.

I enjoy Friendship Games way more than the previous movies: 7/10

I would say 5/10 for all movies and seasons

I am not afraid to admit that MLP is my favorite cartoon of all time. That may sound like a bold claim, but no other show has kept my interest for so long (plus this website wouldn't even exist without it  :orly:). As for rating the show itself:

S1: 7/10

S2: 9/10

S3: 8/10

S4: 10/10

S5: 10/10

S6: Too early to tell as of right now. I will say that what we've gotten so far is nothing but excellent  :pinkie:

Overall score: 44/50 (~88%). Around the A- range

In terms of the Equestria Girls Films:

EQG: 6/10

RR: 8/10

FG: 7/10

Overall score: 21/30 (~70%). Around the C range unfortunately  :adorkable:

There's no such thing as a true fan. Disliking or hating seasons doesn't disqualify anyone of their fanhood. There are lots of Powerpuff Girls fans who hate seasons five and six, but that doesn't make them any less of a fan. The same thing applies here in FIM. If you're a fan, you're a fan.

Season 1 - 7/10. Feels too quaint and fluffy in retrospect, but those qualities are part of why it's so endearing, and it's arguably the most tightly controlled season, focused almost exclusively on the main characters' growing friendships and the early stages of their character development. Might've been an 8/10 when it was still fresh to me.

Season 2 - 8/10. Almost completely disjointed, but also laser-focused on exploring and developing the main characters, to the point where it at least feels way deeper and more emotionally complex than the first season. Also boasts the highest ratio of truly great and memorable episodes of any season, if you ask me.

Season 3 - 7/10. Slightly messier, but somehow ups the ambition from season 2 even with its handful of questionable episodes. It's sort of a shame that it's so brief, but at the same time, it's strange that the short length doesn't make its quality all that much more consistent, and its finale leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

Season 4 - 7/10. Perfectly enjoyable in the moment but so often forgettable. There's a few good themes and solid emotional moments there, and the "key" episodes do a good job of challenging the mane six's core values, but there's like three episodes in there with any character development whatsoever. Nobody grows in this season, and it doesn't feel like it takes any major risks either. So much of it is just "a perfectly fine MLP episode" above all else, and over time that becomes a little tiring and disappointing, especially at the time when you're expecting or hoping for more from it. Might have been 6/10 at the time, but some episodes have improved with different expectations.

Season 5 - 6/10. Stand by that; this season is a complete and utter mess, jam-paced with below-average episodes and habitually biting off more than it can chew when it's not taking excruciatingly few risks. Season 4 felt like a lot of filler, but season 5 almost always has a decent conceit that it just refuses to do nearly enough with, and still boasts absolutely zero character development, and actively detracts from the main characters by cramming in new character after new character. We don't care about these ponies! Let the main characters grow or at least give us secondary characters we recognize! Is it really so damn hard?!

Season 6 - 7/10 (so far). Feels really good to have the show taking risks again, but this isn't a perfect season, especially given that this is the third season in a row where the main characters don't develop at all. Still, this is not only the most fun the show has been in years, it also feels like the freshest and most creative, with actual meaningful diversions from the formulas and structures of the show. A few recent episodes have felt more conventional, but those latest two seem like an anomaly in a generally entertaining and (finally, FINALLY) progressive season.

Equestria Girls: 6/10. Sorta bland, and while not unbearable it's not exactly inspiring or memorable.

Rainbow Rocks: 8/10. Sunset Shimmer is best human, but the movie around her is also delightful.

Friendship Games: 7/10. Goes way over the top, and is really fun because of it, but overstuffed as all hell.

Interesting that I'm not the only one with this sort of opinion. Anyway:

S1: 6/10
S2: 6.5/10
S3: 7/10
S4: 6/10
S5: 7.5/10
S6: 7/10 (so far)

By itself, the show never did much for me in its early seasons. Back then, the fandom picked up a lot of slack for the show with fanart and music. Now that I prefer the stories they're telling with the map and a maturer mane cast, I find that the show picks up slack for the fandom.

By the standards of children's programming in general, it's a good show. By the standards of a cartoon based off a line of children's toys, it's way better than it has any right to be. It might not be up to par with shows like Steven Universe or Gravity Falls, but there are times when it comes within earshot of them. However, it's unfair to try and compare it with either of those shows, since it has a different target audience and handicaps neither Steven Universe nor Gravity Falls have to deal with.
