general media Marvel Reveals Captain America is actually a Hydra Double Agent

It's issue #1 of a new arc. A setup not a payoff. And for the record it did make sense. The whole issue kept flashing back to Steve's mom meeting Sinclair and him basically being raised in the Hydra Youth. (Which anypony who's actually READ IT and not just had the ending spelled out to them has no right to act in the dark about.)

So, does that mean this is some sort of side-verse Cap (cause comics do that ALOT), or is this part of central Marvel continuity?

Like I said, I don't really follow comics, so this is something I'm confused about.

Oh no it is a part of the new continuity, this is THE Captain America, Steve Rogers we're talking about. And actually "comics" don't do that a lot. DC did that a lot. They've reset everything back to square one like three or four times in their history. Marvel, up until 2015, actually had the same continuous history running from all the way back to the sixties up to now.

If they did have a "what if" limited run spinoff, it was clearly distinct like taking place in a post-apocalypse or Elizabethan Europe and it only lasted for a few issues. If elements were popular enough to warrant demand, that spinoff or elements of it would be integrated into the "real" Marvel Universe.

But no, this is Captain America, this is the main Marvel continuity, and this is the beginning of an awesome arc.

When I first saw this, I was very upset, I wanted to punch Marvel in the face!

But now that I have witnessed these two pieces of information, I can seriously see the possibility of this being something absolutely crazy, yet something that could be fantastic.

Have the most patriotic, stand up guy, who doesn't tolerate even swearing, be a sleeper agent. That is something that hits the hearts of everyone. That messes with the minds of anyone who had a conscience and morality.

But it has been done, look at Black Widow. The intensity of that character and the things that she had to go through.

I think that we should wait and see what happens. How they develop the story and character. Something in my gut says that something drastic will happen and it will snap him out of it and then he will work from the inside to defeat Skull. But the trust that he would have to rebuild with the Avengers, oh boy.

You're right, but I just wanted to focus on this point. Black Widow is a spy, that's who she's always been. She's been a double-triple-quadruple agent more than once and twice over. "Complicated morals/allegiance" is her default mode. It comes back to what I keep saying. This punch has landed with the force of a van sized meteorite for so many exactly because it is so at odds with the agreed identity of the character.

This is awesome. Not a fan of comics but i like Cap'n 'Merica. Maybe he is a double agent and will betray hydra? It is funny after all the time being Marvel's American Patriot he is now a damn Nazi XD

Also is there only one Captain America comic series or are there a few alternative storyline comics? :P

As I said above, Marvel has been good at keeping its continuity into a singular thing. There are the occasional spinoffs, but they never last very long and none that I can think of are Cap focused. However, there is technically two Captain Americas right now. One is Steve Rogers, the reared secret Nazi (reality warping is a possibility, see @@Illusion Fox,'s post) and one is Sam Wilson, previously known as Falcon. Steve's long time partner, best friend, and the first ever African American superhero. Steve bequeathed the man his shield and the two men agreed to sort of share the title.

Slight tangent: When we (and by "we" I mean "others than myself") say "Murica" "Merica" or some variation on the slur, it's not affectionate or sincere but either self-effacing or pejorative of someone's perceived unintelligent cultural peer. I'm not from "Merica" I live in and love the United States and I'd be quick to tell anyone, including other Americans, that. (Cap has been my favorite superhero for years for many reasons. Patriotism is a big one.)

Oh no, I'm not offended at all. I just try to make the usage of that term clear to international friends as they might not be aware that it's not a term we use to describe ourselves with a sense of pride, ironic or otherwise. Where "Yankee doodle" went from an insult to a rallying cry, "Murica" is used most often as an insult fired amongst ourselves.

Getting back on topic, I, as an American, as a fan of the character, and as a comic reader, share your opinion on this. Sure I was horrified when I first read it but I'm excited to see where it goes.

  • 4 weeks later...

I guess it's a different Captain America, or someone in Captain America or maybe cos there a Black Captain America that will changelle him. Maybe it another comic book where Captain America is Hyrda, there must be a reason. Guess Captain Britain or Union jack is also a Hyrda, maybe.
