They wasted a perfectly good plot (the map/Spice of your life)

So, in spice of life they revealed that the map had been broken since starlight used it last. Alot of people were left scratching their heads asking "WHY?", since most people didn't even REALIZE the map was broken until they brought it up.

It honestly seemed unneeded and a poor excuse to find a reason to jam Starlight into an episode where she wasn't needed. BUT, the fact is, that would have actually made a decent plot for an entire episode really.

If they'd made the S6 premier, or the first episode after the premier revolve around the map being broken, and the various attempts to fix it, I think they could have made a very good plotline; It would have allowed them to actually delve into what the map "Is", try to look into possible purposes it has (Besides just being a WOW quest giver) and make it seem more important.
Honestly, while the "its broken" excuse seemed out of left field, that would have been a legitimately good episode idea IMO, and I'm sad to see they wasted it.

Actually I am more interested in the friendship problems they did NOT solve because the map was on the fritz during that period.

What are the repercussions of failing to solve them?

Episodes are generally not pitched that way. You ever heard writers and show runners ever say the words, "If it fits the story"? There is a reason for this. Personally, an episode about fixing the map would need to center around a moral and separate conflict. Usually the moral dilemma/conflict and the characters to be used are pitched first in an A <-> B method.

An entire episode about fixing the map would be more interesting than an on screen episode about Rarity acquiring the Canterlot Boutique, but it would also have a tendency to have some forced filler. I also think you are missing something really interesting. Why does that scene exist. It didn't have to be there. We as the audience were not aware the map was broken. The show has previously cast aside the prior season's theme for something new. So why even mention it was broken? Why the weird holography glitch? There was a point to that scene. A hint I believe.

O.o

I hadn't thought of that. I suppose more ammo for those that think Starlight got off easy.

Lore episodes in FIM? Heresy, I say!

Our glorious writers just wanted to play Alex Hirsch but came across as LoL lore team from The Great Retcon. Clues are like Scooby Snacks for us lore enthusiasts don’t cha know, unless the lore enthusiasts don’t really care anymore. Why should we? It’s not that kind of a show after all.

Oh, I’m sure all kinds of bad things happened while the Map has been out of commission: lots of village brawls, a couple of confused ponies that couldn’t decide about what to wear on their first date, some domestic trouble downtown because one stubborn granny didn’t want to go in a retirement home, you know, important stuff. National security and all that. I suppose there could have been a villain or two. Just don’t tell Starlight! She’d get all teary-eyed and would just have to get a solo song about how bad she feels about it. This goat needs none of that!

I like my whine with a nice humorous aroma and a bit of black tinge.

As for the Map fixing episode, Twilight could have invited her Canterlot unicorn buddies Moondancer, Minuette, Lemon Hearts, and Twinkleshine over to her castle in order to fix that damnable contraption. Twilight being Twilight, she’d soon notice that it doesn’t work as intended and she’d be very Twilight about it. After some research, she’d deduce that maintenance must be performed, however; in order to do that, she’d need a couple of horns to assist her in this royal quest. Suffice to say, Cadence has a baby, Luna is asleep, and Celestia is busy being written out of the show, so no dice. Of course, one could also see Map maintenance as a nice excuse to have Celestia X Twilight bonding episode, Celestia being the old and wise authority on all things Harmony.

Sigh. As it turns out, Twily only needed the assistance of Haber’s Waifu to repair a legendary artifact of unfathomable implications, cause of course she did. All hail the Fateful Student!

She actually just power cycled it, the Light show was just there to make everyone at the meeting think she did something hard

Le gasp! Didn’t you hear the exposition?!

Twilight (S06E12, 00: 14): But as part of her studies, Starlight has been assisting me, and together we think we’ve come up with a spell that will get it working again.

Helping push a power button like that! This proves how powerful and awesome she is! Oh Jimmy Boy! We need a pair of wings here stat! Princess! Princess! Princess! Princess!
