RNC spokesperson cites MLP

Out of all comparisons that could have been made, a Republican used MLP. In all seriousness, yeah the quote was taken out of context, but the willingness to compare a bit from the speech to a random Twilight Sparkle quote is awesome. Even better than finding out Bill Clinton knows a bit more about the show than the average person.

Is this the kind of stuff that is considered major news now?  There was just a coup in Turkey and a mass killing in France but MLP is in the news now?  Just goes to show how crazy today's media is.

And just when i thought I'd seen everything this utter farce of a campaign could produce, someone quotes Twilight Sparkle of all things to try and condone plagiarism. Thing is, Twilight would probably be the first pony to get up in arms over plagiarism, let alone getting dragged into this mess.

Surreal. The exposure this is getting MLP is massive, folks. Believe me that this will end up being a key date in history for this show - it reached a new benchmark in popular culture today.

Republican National Committee spokesman Sean Spicer's remarks will be comedy fodder for awhile. It's not necessarily the spotlight fans wanted - but MLP doesn't come off looking badly at all.

Enjoy the fallout. :D

.., This is a real attempt at getting votes? Like... For real? I'm amazed.

I still can't get over how he used a quote about literally doing what you dream about in your dreams, to talk about living your metaphorical dream.

I can't this election anymore, guys.

No he didn't. RNC's chief strategist cited MLP in defense of Melania Trump's speech over accusations of plagiarizing a section of Michelle Obama's speech from the Democratic National Convention in 2008.

The quote was, "This is your dream, anything you can do in your dreams, you can do now." Which when Twilight said it, the ponies were literally in a dream.

I don't really follow politics, but does anyone know if this quote made sense in context when Trump said it? This quote doesn't really make much sense outside of MLP, and I know Trump is pretty notorious for saying a lot of cray-cray things.

It's unclear whether this line was actually taken from MLP. The RNC apparently made this claim in response to allegations of plagiarism.

It was, although out of context.

From S5 E13: "Twilight Sparkle: And not just any! This is your dream! Anything you can do in your dreams, you can do now!"

From this transcript.

What the RNC official said: (CNN article excerpt)

"Melania Trump said, 'the strength of your dreams and willingness to work for them.' Twilight Sparkle from 'My Little Pony' said, 'This is your dream. Anything you can do in your dreams, you can do now,' " Spicer said.

I checked the video and CNN transcribed this part word-for word. The RNC official quoted her exactly.

From the CNN article.

Donald Trump didn't say this. This thread's title is inaccurate.

An RNC official referenced MLP while responding to allegations of Melania Trump's speech being plagiarized.

Thanks, I was actually finding a lot of conflicting information but this helped me better understand what was said.

Wishful thinking, probably, but I can only hope MLP's ratings trajectory can look a bit like Nintendo's stock surge after Pokémon Go came out.

The one thing that weirds me out about all of this is how the hell he actually knew the show, Twilight Sparkle by name, as well as lifting an actual quote from the show, although out of context as @Grepper said.

Probably one of my favorite things to come out of this wacky race so far. Despite the quote making zero sense without its context, which made the guy who said it sound stupid.

At least PrincessTwilight is getting the political recognition she deserves!
