gaming Any Sonic Fans? How Do You Feel About How The Internet Treats The Series?

Well, Generations was certainly awesome. I found Lost World decent overall. The Sonic Boom games? What Sonic Boom games? There aren't any.

Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice was released only a couple of weeks ago, so I count it as being a part of my question.

...And? To my mind, nothing associated with that... Remake... Exists, even if the latest game is apparently more tolerable than its predecessors.

Rise of Lyric will probably go down as being the second-worst Sonic game ever made behind Sonic 06'. With regards to Sonic Generations, I liked the 3DS version since it was the version I could play--I didn't have a PS3, Xbox 360 or a PC--although I do wish the special stages had been done better, and had relied on the Game Gear games.

What are your opinions on the recent Sonic games that have been released within the past five years--including this year.

So we're talking 2012-2016 right? OK, here we go...

Mario And Sonic At The 2012 Olympic Games - Haven't played it.

Sonic 4: Episode 2 - This game was a lot better than Episode 1 I feel, as the physics were much more improved than they used to be. The story successfully recreates that of the old games, though I do wish the levels were a little more new and inspired, ya know, like how Sonic Mania's gonna be. The addition of the Tails moves and Metal Sonic's Episode were a nice touch, but sadly I don't think this is quite the Sonic 4 me and a lot of other fans were hoping for. That doesn't stop it from being a pretty great game though, and I feel too many people slam down on Sonic 4 as a whole.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed - Now I haven't played the first one, but I can safely say this is a SEGA racing game done right. I found it weird that everyone complained about Sonic being in the car, think about it, if he wasn't, he'd just win, it was to even the playing field. Regardless, I enjoyed the various playable characters, the variety of Sonic stages and others from different classic SEGA games, the controls were really tight and the music is just awesome remixes of good old SEGA songs. There's fair challenge without being excessive, there are multiple game modes providing hours of gameplay, and It's a very addicting and fun racer overall.

Sonic Athletics - Haven't played.

Sonic Ghost Shooting - Haven't played.

Sonic Lost World - Ah, this one. So it was a little jarring going into this new style of gameplay after I feel Sonic perfected the boost formula in Generations, but it was still fun nonetheless. I've only played the PC port so I can't really comment on the gamepad mechanics or extra DLC the Wii U version got. Some of the levels I feel were a little cluttered and messy, and SEGA kept throwing game mechanics into random levels hoping we enjoy them and without much cohesion. Regardless the Mario Galaxy style gameplay was pretty good, the wisps are back at full force, after I loved them in Generations, and of course as always the music is awesome, though I really miss Crush 40 now... I don't want to go into too much detail about the specifics, I'll be here forever, but two more things I wanna say is I don't think Super Sonic is worth the effort of getting all the red rings, and while the story was OK, I really need a break from the new writing team, I like lightheartedness but this is too much. Also, screw the Deadly Six! Enough said.

Mario And Sonic At The Sochi 2014 Olympic Games - Haven't played.

Sonic Boom: Rise Of Lyric - Haven't played and probably never will.

Sonic Runners - While it was clearly a bit of a cash grab I liked Sonic runners. The 2D running scroll gameplay was amazing, there were plenty of events, power ups and leaderboards, the level up system was pretty good and the wisps etc. etc. The music was amazing, all the characters and stages were good, though I wish they were new stages and not just Lost World's. I'd comment more but there's not much else I can remember about this game, and I can't check back because sadly, It's not playable anymore.

Sonic Boom: Fire And Ice - Not played yet, but I will and I won't give an opinion on it until then.

If you want me to go into detail about any certain aspects of these games, since I sort of skimmed over them, feel free to ask. Of course, if you want me to I can cover the handheld games which I missed out as well.

I think we can all agree here that Sonic Boom: Rise Of Lyric was pretty terrible. I found Shattered Crystal pretty mediocre, the TV show's still good and Fire & Ice doesn't look half bad honestly. On the subject of Generations 3DS though... I'm sorry, but I can't see Game Gear levels EVER working. There was nothing memorable about those...

I played Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games extensively--both versions--because me being from England and all, yet these are the only two I've played. I didn't bother with the rest of them because they didn't appeal to me. I've played All-Stars Racing Transformed although I didn't end up finishing all of it. Getting those platinum ranks proved way too difficult and I wasn't about to stress myself over something that ultimately didn't do much for me in the long-run. Sonic Lost World... I'll admit that it could have been better had they retained the speed from the previous games. I liked how it looked and the voice acting still makes me chuckle, but losing that speed was a huge blow. Oh, and including Wisps was pointless as they don't really add to the gameplay other than needing a use for the Wii U Game Pad. The Deadly Six... Are pretty much forgettable as they are bland.

Super Sonic isn't worth it but the DLC stages are a nice nod to Yoshi's Island and the Legend of Zelda. Why they didn't include a Mario themed DLC stage is beyond me and a missed opportunity if I ever saw one. Be glad that you didn't play Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. I've seen a couple of Let's Plays of it over on YouTube, and what a mess the game turned out to be. While it is more playable in that sense compared to Sonic 06', the glitches, frame rate, lack of polish, incessant chatter, and more ruin the whole thing.

I've played Sonic Generations for the 3DS and while I no longer have it, I enjoyed going through those old stages again. I wished that they had included stages from Sonic's Game Gear adventures, but I'm not sure if anyone even remembers those. I do of course as I grew up on those. Again, a missed opportunity.

I think we can all agree here that Sonic Boom: Rise Of Lyric was pretty terrible. I found Shattered Crystal pretty mediocre, the TV show's still good and Fire & Ice doesn't look half bad honestly. How could anyone screw up the way Big Red Button did? How does that even happen?

I love the Sonic Boom cartoon--I'm a sucker for slapstick comedy and snappy word play--and is probably the only aspect of the Boom initiative that I'll ever play.

I understand about the Game Gear games. I loved Sonic Chaos and Sonic Triple Trouble because of how unique they were compared to the Genesis games--Sonic 2 for Game Gear is one I've got a love-hate relationship with. The other Sonic Game Gear games were poor at best with some of them you have to wonder why they were given the green light.

You're from England too? Neat.

I understand what you mean when you talk about S&ART, I honestly only finished all the races on Medium difficulty myself. I would like to try my hand at hard mode some time though.

Ugh... I'm sorry, I might get a little rage filled here... I HATE it when people say Sonic Lost World didn't have any speed. Did NOBODY remember how fast the spindash was in that game, and how fast you can do parkour once you've perfected it, and in general there are a lot of exhilarating moments, like that one act where you're running through the honeycombs. I welcome the return of the wisps, but I think they should have been used better. Because since it used to be Wii U exclusive they had to do something with the gamepad, and the wisps fit that role rather well to me, so I don't mind it, despite not playing it on Wii U myself. Lets' just forget about the Deadly Six altogether...

Well, obviously they couldn't do a Mario DLC, because... Well, you know, rivals. Having Sonic in a Mario style level just feels wrong. Oh yes, even though I've not played Boom, I have played the demo, watched 2 let's plays (cobanermani456 and the Game Grumps ones) and have seen various video and article reviews and media coverage to the point where I might as well know the game back to front, because it astounds me that anyone could make a game this bad... I guess BigRedButton saw Sonic 06 and decided to apply that to the Boomiverse. Still, I think Sonic 06 is still much worse.

Well, I discussed before, I don't think Game Gear stages are a good idea... But maybe they could have used stuff from the other parts of Sonic's handheld past, what about the Advance trilogy, Rush and Rush Adventure?

Sonic Boom is the only show that doesn't make forced slapstick terrible, I applaud them for that, I have bought every DVD and have a complete Season set, I don't do that with many cartoons, and I wait eagerly for Season 2.

Why they gave the games the green light? Well, SEGA needed an excuse to use their portable console they sunk money into making. I guess they figured they could capitalise on Sonic's success by getting games on there. Whether it worked is unknown I guess, hope they got enough sales for it to be worth it.

They did use Sonic Rush for one of the levels. I believe it was the Water Palace and they even used the "Back-to-Back" soundtrack in two variations to discern between classic and modern Sonic. I'm surprised none of the Sonic Advance games were used as I think those were some pretty solid titles, and are worthy of being successors to the classic games from the Genesis.

All-Stars Racing Transformed is fun if you don't focus on getting those perfect scores, but if you do decide to go for it, prepare to get frustrated to infinity because they can get absurd in difficulty--especially in the final world. To unlock every character though, you are forced to beat those challenges on the harder difficulties because you just won't have enough stars.

The Sonic Boom reminds of the first Sonic cartoon, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Both cartoons rely heavily on slap stick comedy and dry wit yet the latter goes off the deep end in terms of how it wants to be taken seriously as entertainment. Sonic Boom shows restraint by only going so far without completely losing itself.

I respect your opinion regarding speed in Sonic Lost World. I still think he could've been faster but I accept that they wanted to try something a little different. The Wisps definitely needed to be implemented better and perhaps even been a part of the story instead of just being there because Sega insisted on having them included. The music note Wisp was my personal favourite even if it was only used roughly three times. Since Mario and Sonic are no longer antagonistic towards each other--blame the console wars stuff from the early 1990s--a Mario themed stage isn't entirely out of the question.

I like Sonic, and I hate how SEGA is afraid of trying anything new thanks to the loudmouthed old geezers on the internet insisting all franchises kids like are automagically garbage with an expiration date. Why does Mario never get any of this?

Would I want another Sonic Lost World? Of course as I think what they did was pretty good despite the negativity that ultimately brought it down. A few tweaks here and there and with better villains and you've got a real winner.

It's depressing how it gets bashed so often. Then again, the Sonic fanbase is pretty volatile.

Not all of it. There's just sadly a lot of fairly infamous people who's bad actions are tainting others image of the fanbase as a whole.

Well, at least they're doing a good job of that, so far.

Yeah, but now the rest of the cast has been sidelined.

Eh. For Sonic Mania, yes. But we know little next to nothing about Project 2017, so that might just change yet.

Right. Hopefully, that's the case.

I don't think they're only aiming at classic fans. There's also Project Sonic 2017 coming out and that looks fun.

I love the Sonic games.  Especially the classic ones.

Tbh, I think it both deserves and doesn't deserve it's treatment from the internet.  I feel like the hate and criticism mostly exists because of the immature young fans who get really emotional and loud.  Not to mention, some of Sega's choices for their franchise have been questionable.  There are some super fun modern games but there are also some very bad ones that sadly drown out the good stuff the franchise has.

I get what you mean. Despite being my favourite game franchise of all time, the Sonic series also brought me the worst Xbox 360 game ever made... I think SEGA's been doing better recently though, gotta keep optimistic.

Been hearing a lot of nice things about the franchise recently.  The Sonic Boom cartoon is also (at least in my opinion) is very good too!

Yeah, plus I hear the new 3DS Sonic Boom game is a lot better than the couple of games from 2014. I can't wait for Season 2 of the show.

The 3DS game is waaay more fun, at least there aren't any glitches.

Wait, there's gonna be a second season?  YES!
