In terms of single influence I would have to say Tupac. Most rappers today call cite him as a main influence why they are doing what they are doing Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, MGK, Yelawolf, etc.

Other acceptable answers imo would be Nas, Rakim, LL Cool J, Biggie, and Jay-Z

 

In terms of impact influence it would be Sugarhill Gang. They started it all so yea. "Rapper's Delight"

But that is a group so yea idk if any one of them could really be singled out as the influence giver.

So maybe Melle Mel of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five or maybe Run of Run DMC
