DixonTheAdversary 1,632 December 28, 2016 Share December 28, 2016 There will probably be references to episodes in the show, but they should not impact the movie in a way that makes people who have not watched every episode not understand what is happening.

It might make a pot of money but get a 20% on Rotten Tomateosm Not that Rotten Tomatoes is the most credible site, but I highly doubt that with this voice cast and Disney/Don Bluth veterans on board they will hate the film. They love the mythological/broadway-type mix. The only way it gets bad reviews is if they really screw up and make it incredibly cringy and modernized.

Jangocoolguy 433 December 29, 2016 Share December 29, 2016 Aye, there's the rub...if it, like all the other movies begat by a cartoon show or anime, will pander to fans while telling everyone else in the world to screw off...or if it will try to go easy on the non-fans & parents in the audience and let them get in on it fairly well... 2 "It's like I found a piece of myself I didn't even know was missing!" Prospekt 11,020 December 29, 2016 Share December 29, 2016 There will probably be references to episodes in the show, but they should not impact the movie in a way that makes people who have not watched every episode not understand what is happening. There needs to be some sort of overview of who the characters are and the world they live in, just so maybe the parents who take their kids to see the movie won't be totally lost Other than that, I could see them throwing in little references to episodes. Both of the SpongeBob Squarepants movies have those little bits that only the dedicated fans of the show will understand. I could see the MLP movie doing the same thing, with episode references here and there and maybe even small cameo appearances by characters like Vinyl and Octavia. Those certainly won't overtake the actual plot, though, but they will serve as a way to cater to as much of the audience as possible. 4 Signature by Kyoshi
Silver Letter 1,832 December 29, 2016 Share December 29, 2016 (edited) There is no reasonable way to make characters known to new people without going over their personalities again and rehashing basic information. That could take half of what is likely to be a two hour experience, max. I want to see the ponies we know go on a great new adventure while learning new stuff along the way. Not watch, "meet the ponies". That sort of thing is great in an episodic series. We can get to know characters and see them progress over time. You can't get that same treatment in a film. So I guess parents and other non fans will just have to accept that they won't understand everything in the film, not like they're going to really be paying attention anyway. Anyone who will go see this film for their own enjoyment will have already watched the show proper. Make this film good for the fans and make it something worth seeing and worth paying money for. Silver Letter 1,832 December 29, 2016 Share December 29, 2016 You don't want it so inaccessible otherwise nobody will enjoy it outside of the fandom and little kids. Well, how could it be done? The only way is to waste our time going over details in a "telling" fashion. "Hi! I'm princess Twilight! I live in a castle now but I used to be a unicorn student of our princess Celestia who was given a mission to save the world from Nightmare Moon, an evil spirit that took over the princess of the night, Princess Luna. I'm also very literal and I am all about books and studying!" 2 Silver Letter!!! You know, a lot of movies do this and don't get punished for it and it really annoys me. They will have random stuff and flashbacks that don't make ANY sense if you don't already know a bunch details about the show. I can't name any specific examples off the top of my head but I know I have seen a lot of movies like this. Edited December 29, 2016 by trademark2 2 Feel free to message or add me everypony! Yes but what about the rest of it? And that there are five others to go over? Introductions could take far too long to be reasonable. That doesn't include the Cutie Mark Crusaders as well. A princess is easy to see. A wonderbolt isn't. Also, what is a "wonderbolt"?...they would ask. 1 Silver Letter!!! Allow me then *ahem* The 80s MLP movie (heh) The 80s Transformer movie Movies based on Nicktoons (2 for Rugrats, 2 for SpongeBob Sqaurepants, The Wild Thornerries, the TWT/RR crossover, and Hey Arnold.) Movies based on Disney Cartoons (Ducktales, Recess, and Teacher's Pet come to mind. I think there are some more) Doug's First Movie The Powerpuff Girls Movie The Power Rangers Movie and Turbo: A Power Ranger's Movie Countless anime movies spawned by a hit TV show. Every major anime series has a few. Pokémon and Dragon Ball Z are the biggest examples. For other examples: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_based_on_cartoons 3 "It's like I found a piece of myself I didn't even know was missing!" How do you think WE feel?! GrimGrimoire 4,973 December 29, 2016 Share December 29, 2016 I think S7 will lead up into the film, but I am pretty sure it will still be a stand alone film with little reference to the show itself. The main audience going to see it will already be familiar with the show or will be too young to care. The very title "My Little Pony the Movie" will keep out pretty much everyone else except the curious and the bold. And no one actually cares what the critics think. If they did we would not have a Transformers 5 (and 6 & 7) coming or a Fast and Furious 8 now would we? ~No profound statement needed~

Ganondorf8 11,362 December 29, 2016 Share December 29, 2016 If the movie is canon to the show, then having a brief summary explaining the most significant events from the seven seasons so as to not drag it on too long. If the movie is only canon to itself, then they should still have a summary but limit it to basic character and world explanations again so as to not have it drag on. In either case, the rest of the movie can focus on the story itself which needs to be engaging and bring people in right off the bat. I expect they will use several of the standard plot devices the shows and Equestria Girls are known for, but hopefully some new ideas show up that throw audiences for a loop.

Ganondorf8 11,362 December 29, 2016 Share December 29, 2016 Well that would probably be the best way to do it. Too much time dedicated to summarizing events from the show would take away precious time needed for the movie's plot. It needs to stand on its own two feet while paying homage to where its origins come from.
