Derpy wasn't always Derpy?

So I was watching Parental glidence when I noticed something. When rainbow dash was talking about how she got better and began to succeed I noticed something.

Derpy was the best at first an then got worse but as she did her eyes spread farther apart. Do you think that They'll explain this or leave it as it is?

Heck in a flashback of Season 6's "Where the Apple Lies", you can see that Derpy apparently went through surgery. It must have been a failure if back then, they were trying to improve her eyes and it backfired!

The boarders and directors are telling a story behind the scenes independent of the actual plot of the episodes. It's quite facinating and I'm enjoying seeing the lives of Ponyville citizens get fleshed out this way. 

Thunderlane got some development too in Glideance.

I'm cross eyed myself.  I was told this, but it was going on 50 years ago & may be obsolete.

 

They can do cosmetic surgery on strabismus. They nick the eye muscles on one side & shorten them on the other. This pulls the eye straight. 3 problems.

1 It's purely cosmetic -doesn't change your vision at all, just your looks

2 Because of that, it's elective surgery & expensive

3 It has a tendency to wear off (not always, but often enough it's an expensive gamble)

So, the surgery was before Parental Glidance & wore  off.

I didn't even notice this little bit. XD Another amazing part to an amazing episode. Who knew that Derpy of all ponies would get character development in the background?  The idea of them doing surgery on her though is a bit of a downer.

Well now I have a question. Each year rainbow got better. So that means her eyes spread over a long time span.

Do you think the surgery caused that or do you think she tried to fix that.

Well I guess the show finally has something in that makes Derpy kinda interesting or at least to a certain extent.

This is just how I see it myself but maybe her eye condition worsened over the years and eventually turned into such an inconvenience that she tried to get it fixed in a surgery. I'm paying too much attention to background happenings but it's interesting to see that the background characters can also have all kinds of things happening in their lives.

Could she have had some sort of accident? It's possible that the bandages aren't from surgery to fix a pre-existing condition, but because something happened to her eyes that required a stay in the hospital. 

Maybe some sort of flying accident? That's not something we see much of in the show- life-altering sports injuries- but they're common in real life, and I imagine they must happen to Pegasus ponies quite often, especially due to their competitive nature. An injury to the eyes could cause some sort of brain damage as well, explaining her klutzy behaviour.

Poor Derpy... still, she seems pretty happy nowadays, so hopefully she's managed to move on from what happened. Part of me hopes we'll see this expanded on in the future- imagine what that'd mean to kids with disabilities- but something tells me we won't see it anytime soon.

I didn't notice that. That seems quite likely what they intended,  though she doesn't look too unhappy. I feel bad for Flitter, as she never really improved except to beat Cloudchaser once.
