As some of you may know, I am an avid fanboy of the RPG. Be it WRPG, JRPG, whathaveyou, I absolutely love RPGs.

What do I love about them? Honestly I couldn't say, I just adore them.

Now, in this topic I think we'll discuss RPGs and the many good things about them.

A few starter questions:

Your favorite RPG series?

Your favorite RPG? (If different from above)

Your favorite ability system?

Best characters iyo?

Favorite sequences/bosses? (Keep these in spoilers for those who don't wish to see it please!)

Favorite RPG setting?

Preferred encounter type? (Visible or random or other?)

Do you like RPGs that are traditional more or ones that are unique in some way?

RPG series you would recommend to anyone?

Favorite RPG soundtracks or songs? Do you prefer battle themes or immersive town themes, etc.?

I know I did an encounter type thread a while ago but we'll include it here too.

In this thread we can also post what RPG we're playing and what we're doing in it, maybe strike up some conversation about it.

IMPORTANT: There are some games where people will without a doubt argue about what genre they are. Games like the Legend of Zelda series are often argued about as to whether it's actually an RPG or Fallout 3 which is argued about whether it's truly an RPG or just a shooter. Let's not get caught up in arguments over this, a little bit of debate is fine of course but in the end respect that not everyone will agree on genres in some games. Some games blur the line between genres and thus aren't truly one or the other and sometimes no one can agree. Keep that in mind when discussing things in this thread.

Now, to start out by answering the RPG questions myself. But don't be afraid to ask questions yourself that I didn't start with. Remember this is a conversation thread, not a poll or survey, so don't be afraid to make some conversation!

My favorite RPG series tends to change around a lot but ones that constantly stick at the top are: Wild Arms (though I've only played the first two and desperately wanna play 3-5), Star Ocean (played all of them though only played a bit of the first, the rest I've played to the end of the game or beaten), Final Fantasy (Which I've played most of) and Baten Kaitos (Played all of, since there's only two games)

Within those series' my favorite game of all of them would definitely have to be Wild Arms 2. I usually have a hard time deciding favorites for anything but Wild Arms 2 is by and far above the rest imo.

Favorite ability system would have to come from Final Fantasy IX or Xenosaga Episode I.

The way Final Fantasy IX works is you get abilities from the equipment you have on and how much AP you get in battle and even when you have an ability you don't have to have it equipped at all times. In fact, trying to have them all equipped is a waste of space since you have a limit to how many abilities you can have on at a time and it's based on a gemstone meter that goes up as you go levels (It doesn't really have a name as far as I know so I just call it stones or gemstones) and each ability takes a different amount of stones so you gotta be smart and know what enemies your up against to properly utilize what abilities to have equipped. It works the same for spells as far as getting them but these you don't have to equip or unequip, they are always there. It's just the background/support abilities that need to be equipped, the abilities that allow you to be immune to certain status effects or make you strong against certain enemies and stuff like that.

Xenosaga Episode I is a little simpler where your abilities are based on three types of points you get from battle. I haven't played this game in a while so my memory is a little fuzzy but you use the different points for different things: One is for your stats and your abilities learned, one is for the support abilities gotten from equipment (you have to actually extract the ability from the equipment to use it as a support ability) and the last is for upgrading the attacks you do have so they are stronger and can be used more efficiently in battle. You can also spend points in transferring abilities from one character to another but I haven't tried that yet. In a way it's very similar to FFIX so I guess that's why I love it so much.

There are a lot of awesome characters in RPGs and it's hard to name them all but I'll give it a shot:

Brad Evans (Wild Arms 2)

Zidane and Freya (Final Fantasy IX)

Serge, Lynx and Kid (Chrono Cross)

Dart, Haschel, Meru, Albert, the old Dragoons and Lloyd (Legend of Dragoon)

Milly and Guillo (Baten Kaitos Origins)

Kalas, Savyna, King Ladekhan and Giacomo (Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean)

Pretty much all the main characters (Final Fantasy XIII)

Eldore (White Knight Chronicles)

Auron and Tidus (Final Fantasy X)

Yuna and Brother (Final Fantasy X-2)

Balthier and Fran (Final Fantasy XII)

Yangus (Dragon Quest VIII)

The bird guy who's in your party, the judge you are chasing and Filo (Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings)

I'm probably forgetting many but that's what I got off the top of my head. lol

Final boss of Wild Arms 2 is absolutely amazing and is my top pick for favorite bosses. I won't spoil it because it's an amazing fight and truly finishes off the story and everyone needs to play this game. The music is amazing and fits the setting incredibly too.

Favorite settings for RPGs...well I can't say I have an overall preference I just prefer them not to be typical swords and mages type settings. I like a little flare of a unique world like Final Fantasy XIII or Wild Arms 2 or Legend of Dragoon. (Can you tell I really love Wild Arms 2? xD)

I have no preference for encounter type really. Random, visible or real-time it's all a part of the experience imo.

I prefer when RPGs try to be unique rather than be generic "Level up and get abilities and stats" type stuff, that on top of the above mentioned love of unique worlds I'm definitely one for uniqueness though games like Oblivion work too even though they aren't very unique because they are very very well made. I love to be able to abuse ability systems early in the game and break the entire game if I know how to use it properly rather than just having to grind to get stronger early on.

If I had to recommend any series to anyone I would recommend Baten Kaitos or Wild Arms more than anything. Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest are good but these two series stand above them completely imo.

As for soundtracks, I absolutely adore the Baten Kaitos and Wild Arms 2 soundtracks. Baten Kaitos as a series tends to have a terrific combination of rock as well as orchestrated and even some electronic while Wild Arms 2 by itself mixes orchestrated with "western" sounds to it. One of my favorite Wild Arms 2 battle themes is this:

And that's all I have to say, hope this thread gets some conversation going! I'm an avid RPG lover and hope there are many others out there!

I totally forgot Vashyron. He's such an amazing character: A smartass when he wants to be but can be serious when he needs to be. I haven't gotten all that far into Resonance of Fate but I love the game and it's characters. It's humor is hilarious.

I would agree but there are still many that will argue the point and still try to say Zelda is an RPG. It's true that Zelda shares a few elements with RPGs but personally I can never see it as anything close to what an RPG is.

O_O In reality I can't even imagine them trying to shoot something like that but as far as the game goes that's gotta give some massive bonuses to your gun's stats.

Zelda is totally not an RPG, and I even wrote practically an essay on the subject. It's on some forum somewhere, I'll try to find it later.

The original Fallouts were definitely RPGs, the newer ones, not so much. I'd still classify them as RPGs, but they're way more towards the action side than most.

Your favorite RPG series?

Shin Megami Tensei

Your favorite RPG?

Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age (Star Ocean: Till the End of Time is a pretty close second :))

I count the two GS's as one game since the second actually starts before the first one ends, chronologically. Also, they were originally intended to be one game, but they couldn't fit that much amazing shit on one GBA cart. The story isn't cliche, the graphics are amazing, given that it's a GBA game (and actually, they still look beautiful these days), the music is amazing. The characters aren't particularly developed, though, which is a bit of a short coming.

Your favorite ability system?

Probably Persona's system where you have a bunch of different personae, all with different stats, spells, etc, and you can switch between them at will.

Basically, you can drastically alter how the main character fights whenever you want, just be equipping a different persona. Also, you can fuse personae to make new, more powerful ones, and they can inherit moves and stats, a bit like pokemon. Makes for some very interesting strategies :)

Best characters iyo?

Not sure.

Favorite sequences/bosses?

Sphere, in SOTET. Several interesting bosses, not to mention half the random encounters there are practically mini-bosses :)

Favorite RPG setting?

I've always liked how a lot of the SMT games have twisted versions of our world. Especially Persona 3.

Preferred encounter type? (Visible or random or other?)

visible. I like to be able to avoid things when I need to.

Do you like RPGs that are traditional more or ones that are unique in some way?

Unique, by far.

RPG series you would recommend to anyone?

Shin Megami Tensei. The games aren't connected by story, but more atmosphere and themes. All are very dark and deal with mature themes. Most are pretty difficult, too.

Favorite RPG soundtracks or songs? Do you prefer battle themes or immersive town themes, etc.?

Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age have the best goddamn soundtrack of any game ever.

I've seen some pretty solid arguments about Zelda being an RPG but I could come up with quite a few reasons why it's not myself.

As for SMT, I've wanted to play those games for a long time. Only one I've had any real experience playing was Devil Survivor (Which my brother won't even play even though I let him start over my file and now that I wanna play it I can't because he's still "playing" it though he's not really playing it at all)

I think Persona 3 FES is on PSN now so I should get it and check it out.

Your favorite RPG series?

For me it's inbetween Fallout and WoW

Your favorite RPG?

At the moment Spiral Knights

Your favorite ability system?

Weapon proficiency and Skill proficiency (The more you use them the better you get with them)\

Best characters iyo?

My favorite all time character from all RPGs i've ever played has to be "The lone Wanderer" (You in Fallout) X3

Favorite sequences/bosses?

Right now it's Lord Vanaduke, last boss at the moment for Spiral Kights (Not including the DLC)

Favorite RPG setting?

Vast open areas, I really like the sandbox feel that you can do anything and everything, within the confines of the game.

Preferred encounter type?

Visible, I really don't like the random sceen sequence/black out.

Do you like RPGs that are traditional more or ones that are unique in some way?

Traditional will always have aplace in my heart, but i'm always open to try new unique types.

RPG series you would recommend to anyone?

Fallout (Fanboy-ness obvious yet? lol)

Favorite RPG soundtracks or songs?

This one i'll have to side with FFVII, the music from that game and it's additions are amazing.

Do you prefer battle themes or immersive town themes, etc.?

Both, I like hearing and seeing the little things that happen in towns to make it feel like an actual town rather than just clumped up buildings and one open store, and battles should always be as clean as possible, and by that I mean not glitchy, smooth, and visualy pleasing.

Isn't it your game? Just start over his file and let him deal with it. Awesome game, btw. Still haven't gotten all the endings, though :(

Get it. It's AMAZING. Definitely my favorite SMT, so far at least. I still have Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga in my stack of PS2 games I need to play, and I hear they're both really awesome as well.

Honestly, as far as characters go, I'm not much a fan of the "put yourself in their shoes" type characters like Elder Scrolls or Fallout. The characters themselves have no real personality to like or hate, you make the personality so you don't necessarily have a choice in liking or hating them since they are YOU (unless you specifically make them assholes lol)

I much prefer to have characters have a personality rather than their personality being told to you by NPCs and events in the game.

As far as immersion into such worlds I understand why it happens but I still prefer when there's a set character personality rather than a "do what you want" approach.

Of course, I'm not very well versed in WRPGs so I can't say for all of them. I haven't played Dragon Age or Mass Effect so it may be a moot point there.

Isn't it your game? Just start over his file and let him deal with it. Awesome game, btw. Still haven't gotten all the endings, though :(

Yeah, it's my game but my brother will throw such a hissyfit if I try to do that and he'll likely take his games out of my room for doing it. Of course, the only one I even play is Oblivion really (I only play the Naruto and DBZ games once in a while...) but still, the repercussions for doing such a thing are catastrophic because my brother has anger issues and believes the world is against him whenever something he doesn't like happens. He plays the victim all the time and it makes it hard to do ANYTHING.

As for SMT: Most people I talk to say Persona 4 is best but I won't make a decision til I've played more of them.

Your favorite RPG series? Tie: Final Fantasy (1-10 excluding 2, the one with Furion) and Breath of Fire(1-5)

Your favorite RPG? (If different from above) Single RPG: Parasite Eve.

Your favorite ability system? Most of the early Final Fantasy games..

Best characters iyo? Most of the Breath of Fire 3 cast, Zidane, and "The protagonist" (Those silent hero's that we all love to name after ourselves :) )

Favorite sequences/bosses? (Keep these in spoilers for those who don't wish to see it please!)

Favorite boss/ sequences, Well there are so many amazing ones to choose from! Well the Final day in Parasite Eve where you fight Eve herself for the final time and the 4 forms of the Ultimate Being. Another from Parasite Eve, the optional final boss, where you climb the 77 floors of the chrysler building to fight a boss that turns out to be the main characters sister and the "Original Eve", also this boss is balls to the wall hard. Another being the Final dungeon of Final Fantasy 9, seeing all the memories of your party in Memoria. Last one I want to mention is Breath of Fire 3's encounter with Teepo, your long lost childhood friend that is now your enemy. The whole event is really sad as well as having a lulzy moment where you can steal a weapon called "Dragon Slayer" which you can equip in combat that deals like double damage to him!

Favorite RPG setting?

Preferred encounter type? (Visible or random or other?) RANDOM All The- *Random encounter* GOD DAMMIT! Still love em :P

Do you like RPGs that are traditional more or ones that are unique in some way? I am partial to the older styler of RPG's however a game willing to explore it's limits earns my respect (I love Persona)

RPG series you would recommend to anyone? Breath of Fire, Persona (Shin Megami Tensei)

Favorite RPG soundtracks or songs? Do you prefer battle themes or immersive town themes, etc.? I love a well put together immersive theme that fits the area well but I mean a battle theme really sets a tone for the game! Example (And my absolute favorite, I post this when I can but it's SOOO good!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcvvNO4v5eY

Composed by:

Yoko Shimomura Known for her work on the kingdom Hearts soundtrack!

Now when it comes to my favorite background, ambient music, I'd have to say: FF7's world map 2 theme

Your favorite RPG series? Suikoden Series counts as RPG, right?

Your favorite RPG? Suikoden 2. It's just too enjoyable for me

Your favorite ability system? Learnt by gaining skill points and distributing them on a skill tree. Or where your character attachment determines their affinity to casts certain abilities. Until now I haven't met any system I favoured the most.

Best characters iyo? Shun from Ar Tonelico 2

Favorite sequences/bosses?

That mouth-creature thing in Chrono Trigger. I can't remember clearly why, but that boss fight was very entertaining :P

Favorite RPG setting? Post-apocalyptic world. Preferably where the characters live on a hunk of a machine

Preferred encounter type? Visible, it's easier to grind that way imo

Do you like RPGs that are traditional more or ones that are unique in some way? Don't really care tho

RPG series you would recommend to anyone? Suikoden series

Favorite RPG soundtracks or songs?

Do you prefer battle themes or immersive town themes, etc.? I prefer fancy battle soundtracks more, you can't really feel the 'rush' while listening to a calm song.

I have a PS3 but I do plan to get a PSP as soon as I get a job. It's the very first console I wanna buy.

So if you buy a PSP and like RPG here are the bests (for me):

- Crisis Core and Kingdom Hearts for their stories.

- Monster Hunter for the hardcore level

- 30 second heroes if you want to have fun with the most unique gameplay ever

And here is my answer to the initial question, beware i'm very talkative:

My favorite RPG series ?

The witcher serie. As a fan of the book, I was afraid at first, but they did a very good job. The combat system really gives you the feeling, the sensation to be a monster slayer. The universe, very dark and cruel, is here too, and it can be very hard to evolve in it when the consequences of your choices begin to handicap you.

My favorite RPG?

Chaos Ring. Yup it’s an I phone game. Made by square enix and OMIGOSH it is awesome.

If you are looking for the perfect combat or customization system, you wont find it. But if you are like me, and what you enjoy more is an intense story which bring you to love and hate your characters and can even make you cry, here it is. The artistic work, with the artworks and the music, is brilliant too.

My favorite ability system?

No idea, nothing comes to my mind.

To me one of the best “creation” system is the on from The Elder Scroll 2 Dagerfall:

You give main second and subsidiaries abilities to your character, advantages (like regenerate in the water of absorb mana) and inconvenient (fear of a kind of monster, being hurt by holy places), and then you create the social rank with every part of the society.

You can do barely everything you want, and the more powerfull it will be, the harder the training will have to be, and if you decide to be weak at the beginning, the you’ll evolve even faster.

Best character?

Joshua from Fire Emblem the sacred stone, and Matthew from Fire emblem. Why? Because I love this kind of character (pretty close from my own personality). They can be lazy, even a little bit immature, they hate responsibilities and duty and always seek freedom. But when it comes to help friends, protect the innocents, and face their duties, they will do it. They will curse themselves for doing so but they will do it, and even if they will never admit it, it will be done with no regret.

My favorite scene?

In the Chaos Ring game. When your couple of heroes needs to fight with another one, especially when you play as Escher against Eluca. At first the characters only wanted to freed themselves, and the more greedy were seeking the eternal life. But at the end they don’t care. They discovered the true nature, the purity of the link between both of them, and they will fight for it no matter what. They know they can’t surrender, and they know it’s the same for the opponent couple.

There’s no hard feeling in this fight, they are like “I know you can’t loose, and you know I can’t. This battle is meaningless because our will is as strong as an human being’s will can be, there’s nothing to prove, nothing to achieve. But here are the rules, the destiny that linked us together want us to fight, and that same destiny forbid us to die. So grab your sword, and if you win, then I wont be mad at you, just happy”.

Favorite RPG seeting?

Noone. Like the “real time” style like in Dragon Age as long as the game is hard and strategic enough to force you to pause and think.

Favorite encounter type?

Mix, it could be random in the map world and visible enemies in the places like dungeons (where you cant meet an enemy “by chance”).

Type old/ new?

I’m a crazy open-minded player. Everything’s fine for me.

Recommendation:

Nothing comes to my mind so lets see what’s the best I can recommend for what:

Action: Diablo, Borderland

Story and choices: Witcher

Story without player choices: Chaos Ring

Dream world: Kingdom Hearts

Make you cry: Crisis Core: FF7

OMIGOSH IT’S HARD: S.T.A.L.K.E.R and Monster Hunter

Fav soundtrack

For those who reed the spoiler: this song makes me feel all the sadness and the beauty of the fight at the same time, I love it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Tsh7Mtc2CQ&feature=relmfu

Love this one too, fell like it's calling for a fight to the death:
