Well, you can make a bat-pony with the Pony Creator

Yeah, but the Pony Creator is fan-made. It's not made by Hasbro so it doesn't really mean anything.

I also think that it was probably a costume made by Luna to match hers. Afterall it was Nightmare Night and she's probably powerful enough to change the appearance of a few of her guards wings!

A pony/dragon hybrid..l.now that'd be cool...

Now, I know what you're thinking; Draconnequi already exist, but this could be a new kind of combo. :P

Wings of Darkness

The appearance of Luna's bat-winged guards piqued my interest when Luna Eclipsed came out. It was just one of a huge number of wild and crazy things the episode introduced to canon.

We could assume Luna enchanted regular palace guards to have bat wings as a "costume", but why would she? The plot of the episode was that Luna despised Nightmare Night and wanted to "change this dreadful celebration into a bright and glorious feast!" Aside from her cloak of bats (is that awesome or what?), Luna didn't appear to wear any sort of costume for Nightmare Night, and it's reasonable to infer that Luna, her chariot and her guards look that like normally.

When the episode came out, I found myself musing about the significance of the bat-winged guards and dubbed them (rather tongue-in-cheek) "Chiropterequi", after the order Chiroptera for bats and Equi for horses. That certainly doesn't roll off the tongue, but it's probably good enough "for science".

As we saw in the Season Two finale, Luna apparently lives somewhere other than Canterlot. So where, exactly, does she live? Perhaps the moon, perhaps in a dark castle somewhere. In any case, the "chiropterequi" may well be a race unto themselves, Luna's own pool of subjects. Like bats, they would probably hang upside down in their caves during the day, emerging at night to fly around and eat whatever it is they eat (insects?).

My Season Three wish list includes a Luna-centric episode that shows us where she spends her time, and perhaps unveils an entire civilization of her bat-winged pegasi. If it had aesthetics anything like those Luna displayed in Luna Eclipsed, that would be one epic episode. I can only pray.

In the meantime, my own pet name for the bat-winged pegasi has been "Nocturnes". Kind of silly, and perhaps not as poetic as "Malumai", but I like the sound, the way the pun fits in with the show's penchant for puns and, of course, the musical reference. ^_^

Nocturnes sounds cool, too. But so does Malamai! What to do? I can do a poll, right?, how do you do that?

I Also like the Idea that they are live near Luna, who must live far away from Canterlot, It would explain why you only see them pulling her chariot.

That's pretty cool, never really noticed these 'Malumai' before, as you dub them- I'm hoping that they live on the moon, that way my hopes of there being life on Equestria's moon would be fulfilled!

Did anyone notice that their ears are different, they have tufts of hair at the tips.

And their eyes have slit pupils, like some reptiles, or dragons...

I think they should be called νυχτερίδ πόνυ :)

And I didn't notice the hair tufts, Thats cool!

I thought their ears were bitten at first (rough Military training?)

Makes them look even more like bats

Batasus. Plural version is batasi.

... you do realize that Batasus sounds like Badasses when you say it out loud, right?

Not to split hairs but νυχτερίδ πόνυ is Greek. Quoted from Project Horizons.

I only noticed the tufts of hair thanks to it.

Mulamu sounds good, a lot easier to remember and spell than νυχτερίδ πόνυ. (Thank you copy and paste)

If You Guys Think the Malumai show be a new speicies on MLP, spread the Word! See if we can get them to add it as a speices in roleplaying (you can make them in the pony creator, right?)! Now Bat ponies are no longer Pegasi!

Ya a civilization of these dark batwinged pegasi would be really interesting, like the idea ponyvangelist had for an episode set there, I'd love an episode exploring that society of moon pegasi, what their technology is like and such. Luna came down from the moon with her bat pegasi guards and was talking in the traditional canterlot voice, which they seemed to have no issue with, so perhaps they're society is like equestria's 1000 years ago.

Maybe. Maybe they became more industrial (moon mining?) and are opposites of Ponyville

Those seriously don't look like Pegasi wings

Love it. Was re-watching Season 2 last night and fell in love with these guys. They have an amazing design and I like Maluma as a name for them. Seems to fit. :high-five!:

Maybe....OH OH OH, maybe they're a dark medieval gothic 1800's Victorian style society? Completing the dark gothic mood with the fact that they live on the moon so it's always dark out. Now that would be awesome :D Ponies in top hats :D :D :D :D :D

Vampire Malamai... lets not go there yet

They already kinda fit the bill appearance wise, but I actually meant maybe they have a vampiric and werewolf subgroup of their species on the moon, where as normal Malamai aren't like that.

That and a gothic 1800's victorian pony society would be something unique to the show, they'd stand out from the other pony societies we've seen so far. Damnit, this is making me fangasm so hard ><

Things like that make this community so much cooler than other fan bases. You want Ponies with a Victorian Steampunk Gothic lifestyle that live on the moon? Sure, Why not?
