Your opinion on Canterlot folk?

OK, Canterlot. You know, the place where Twilight was brought up, and the place where she passed her magic exam with flying colors... literally. But of course, we've actually seen the Canterlot folk and what they're like, and what they do.

For the record, I have a personal vendetta against these folk. They are too haughty for their own good, snobbish, arrogant, and take high class too far. Not like Fancy Pants, though. That guy is awesome.

Looking back at "Sweet and Elite", I can safely say those folk make my blood boil. I had actually hoped that Fancy Pants would berate his own entourage, but hey.

Well, for all we know, maybe we've just seen the, uh, "yuppies," if you will, of Canterlot so far. Ya know, like how there's Upper Manhattan in NYC? I think that's the case with Canterlot, we simply have seen the elite of the elite there, not some of the normal ponies who live there. I mean, Twilight's family lives there, and they looked pretty normal for the most part, not even really rich, and of course there was also that sort of redneck pony that Rarity ran into from Ponyville, so I'm sure there's a lot more ponies in Canterlot than the snobbish elite that we've seen so far. Like I said, I think they just happen to be the only Canterlot ponies we've seen so far in the show.

^what he said

You can't possibly judge an entire city just because a few dozens of them are full snout-up retards

Pony Joe was also (possibly) from Canterlot. And I'm sure he's quite rich. Heck, he even got a donut shop just right beside the castle, but he's okay.

I almost wrote a brief fan-fic about a pony who became Lord Mayor of Canterlot, getting into verbal fights and debates every day in the City Council, fighting for social renewal and cultural restoration. He would always make enemies with the upper class but stayed in office because of his popularity with the poor and downtrodden.

Most of them are elitist. A lot of them are also followers. They give an opinion about something they don't like and when someone they respect says they like it, they all change their opinion.

High And Flighty

post-2150-0-49474300-1337963062.jpg

The Canterlotians we see are caricatures of snooty high society, and form a backdrop against which our more likeable mane cast can operate. As others have pointed out, not all Canterlotians are snobs. Indeed, a recurring theme is that the true nobles are vindicated while the puffers and posers inevitably get their comeuppances. And that, of course, is always a satisfying thing to see.

That Twilight and her parents are so gracious, good-natured and down-to-earth despite being surrounded by so much vanity bolsters the strength of their character. Heck, Twilight is Princess Celestia's personal protégé at the most prestigious school of magic in Equestria, her brother is Captain of the Royal Guard, her babysitter was a princess and, as wielder of the Element of Magic, she is one of the most powerful unicorns that ever lived.

And yet she's still sweet, adorkable Twilight, who doesn't have a single snobbish bone in her body.

Then there's Fancy Pants, the "upper crust" exemplar everypony falls over themselves to associate with. He's constantly surrounded by fawning supplicants, and does seem to relish it, and yet, when the chips were down in Sweet and Elite, he proved to be a true gentlecolt of incomparable quality, accepting Twilight, her friends and even the unmasked Rarity with open hooves.

As irritating as they may be, the snobbish Canterlotians serve an important role in the world of Equestria, by repeatedly illustrating the fact that those who seek to elevate themselves by putting down others inevitably end up at the bottom.

Seen that way, they can garner more sympathy than scorn, and allow us to cheer everypony who is able to rise above the sociocultural quagmire of "Canterlot high society".

High end, snooty, too rich.

That pretty much sums it up for me.

They are basically the 1% of Equestria (even though I'm against occupy Wall street and think this 99% and 1% is overexaggerated), they remind you a bit of the 1920s America, they frequently throw parties, dress nicely, drink a lot (even though alcohol doesn't exist in Equestria), and are well educated.

Representation of the 1% like DD said, or if you want to go back further, the overly rich Aristocrats. Yeah they're annoying, but they're obviously written to be like that. Only once in a while does one not act like that, and it's in order for the plot to work (Fancy Pants, as has been said). They bug me, but, at least I know they're supposed to be bugging me, so in the end, it's fine to me.

How do you know?

B)

90% of MLPforums users keep saying there is no alcohol in Equestria, so I agree with them now. :P

Fancy Pants seems cool, I'd hang with that dude, and Jet Set and Upper Crust are kinda funny in a snobby way, so I guess I really don't mind them- most of them seem to be bandwagon jumpers when it comes to Fancy Pants' opinions though, so I guess that kinda bothers me.

If you were born into wealth and raised that way,

you would act that way to.

I don't hate, I accept them for the way they are.

Killing with kindess ;) .

Besides, not like they've done anything personally wrong to me, or anypony else.

They all remind me of the Harvard crowd I ran into when visiting BUA with a friend of mine. They genuinely believed that I was an uneducated grunt who knew nothing about the world outside of Boston. One of them reminded me of fancy pants, in that he actually gave me a chance at a real conversation. One good apple in a basket of rotten tomatoes.

The spoke the same way, talked about the same things, and they all wanted to get the attention of the one guy who had the (sarcasm nuke inbound) audacity to have an intelligent conversation with me.

My opinion...is mostly what has already been said, with emphasis on Pony Joe, Twilight's parents, and characters like that...

They're raised to be regal, sure, but I believe they would be the first to fill up the stalls if there comes a megaspell rain, do you guys understand?

Like, they might represent the filthy rich here on this planet.
