Nightmare Moon says that she has banished her sister to the moon for years. Does that mean Nightmare Moon used the elements? She truly understands and embodies true friendship, loyalty, kindness, laughter, honesty, generosity? Does that mean Nightmare Moon is a very good pony? Does that mean the elements could work on any innocent beings?

I'm so confused. Someone could come up with an acceptable explanation?

Probably not. Luna/Nightmare Moon is the Princess of the night, and the mare in charge of the moon. I'd imagine maybe she found some way to send Celestia to the moon using that power, which is way more believable than her somehow using the elements.

Welp, but If that's so, Celestia wouldn't even need the elements against Nightmare Moon.

 Well, Celestia is the Alicorn of the day, controller of the sun. She can move the moon and bring night, but it's not her specialty, maybe she can't send anypony to the moon herself. She could maybe send her to the sun, but uh...Well, I don't know exactly how the imprisonment in the sun or moon works, but I can definitely think of a few good reasons to not banish Luna/NM to the sun, the tan would be awful.

 Other than, has it ever been stated before that Celestia knew for sure what the Elements would do to her sister before using them? I mean, they reformed Luna the second time around, didn't they? So, it's possible Celestia might not have even known what the elements were going to do, maybe she could banish her sister herself, but hoped the elements would do something else.

Lmao, you don't need to have a spoiler tag for Nightmare Moon's name. It's an episode that aired almost three years ago. Spoiler tags are meant for episodes that have already aired in other countries and leaked information as to be respectful to others who want to watch the new episodes blind.

On-topic, I doubt she would be capable of using the Elements, since her world in the Season 5 finale was a parallel reality of what could have happened, not an alternate universe with different rules. It's much more likely she just used her magic. If turning someone to stone is not a power exclusive to the Elements, as seen by the cockatrices and Twilight having the power to turn Rockhoof into a statue in A Rockhoof and a Hard Place, then sealing someone in the moon could very likely not be a power exclusive to the Elements either. Also, Starlight showed she was capable of using magic that could distort time and reality in the same episode. So I say that the use of the Elements was not involved.

mabye each prinsess hase thare own planet for banishing and thay needed the eliments to send them to other ones and salestea did not want luna to get a tan
