How would you feel if a main character was downgraded to out of focus permanently?

This could happen to a few main characters from now on for the rest of the show, either because:

• The writers have no idea what to do with the character anymore for being so assertive.
• They probably want to get rid of her on purpose, so they make up an episode we know we're gonna hate (like Yakity-Sax), 
• Us fans care more about the new characters (like Starlight and the Student Six) and/or the rest of the Mane Six.

Does this mean the Mane Six will not be called the Mane Six any longer?

I'd be a little bummed out if that did happen. Yes, I'm interested in the other characters, but the Mane 6 are all still very important.  I don't really think this would happen though, as we've come too far to simply cast a main character aside

I can't see it happening. While some of them might appear more in a season than the others, they are still clearly the stars of the show. And while there are new characters in significant roles (such as the Student 6), the Mane 6 still appeared in more episodes than any other characters in season 8.

Also, I really doubt they would write a bad episode on purpose. "Yakity-Sax" might not be a particularly popular episode, but it's not the first to be received negatively by fans (and it isn't even one of the most disliked from what I've seen). If they really wanted to get rid of a character (which Hasbro wouldn't want), they'd be more likely to just give them less attention than the characters they preferred. That strategy wouldn't even work in the first place, as children (still the target audience in spite of everything) might still enjoy an episode, even if the older fans disliked it.

Not Pinkie Pie, sadly. Smolder, one of the Student Six, appeared in like, as many episodes as she did.

That's exactly what they've been doing to Fluttershy since, I don't know, Season 6? And they're already doing it to Pinkie as of Season 8.

I'm positive that neither of them deserve this at all, but it's still happening anyway without notice.

Rainbow Dash is actually one of the Mane Six that's getting far too much in the show nowadays. She can't just keep on doing this.

Am I sensing hints of repressed racism speciesism and prejudice? The show may be "My Little Pony", but it's also more importantly "Friendship is Magic" which honestly I believe is more important than any focus on the ponies themselves. It's what the Mane 6 represent that we should value, not who they are.

At any rate you're just playing into the likes of Cozy Glow's hands....

Besides this, I can't help but feel that there's needless hatred for Season 8 and the School of Harmony. Why? Just because your favorite Mane 6 character isn't the focus of the show as much for 1 season? I understand the show is *allegedly* nearing the end, but what Season 8 and the later seasons have done for MLP is much invaluable world building and character development, even if its not among our beloved protagonists. But aside from that, the show's not even called, MLP: The Mane 6, MLP: Twilight Sparkle or anything like that. These characters will make their debuts again and they have their roles as central protagonists, but we can't expect the writers to always fixate on them. The world of Equestria is so much bigger than they are and we should acknowledge that. Trust me, as a fan of the resident background pony, Applejack, I have been throughout the seasons quite aware of this.  Your favorite characters won't always get the spotlight, but enjoy it when they do.

What each of these characters does however, is impart upon us their own experiences, personalities and lessons to appreciate, but they are still just one part of a bigger world they are apart of and protect. People who understand what the Elements of Harmony and Friendship is Magic should understand that by now. But with that I'll leave everyone with some Shakespeare, as narrated by the illustrious Morgan Freeman:

I have to say that, yeah, I don't really see this happening. I'm 99.9% sure they would rather just reboot the series entirely than do away with only one of the mane characters. And more than anything it's just due to how iconic the six are as a group, and how their friendship bond has pretty much become the linchpin of the entire series.

Other shows are able to get away with it (because they're not MLP :P), especially if one character in particular is just perceived as unpopular compared to the rest of the main cast. Just look at Mark Brendanawicz from Parks and Rec.
