Friends on Profile

I noticed that some people have a friend section on their profile. Why is that?

It was a feature these forums used to have, before a software upgrade removed it. People have been asking for it back again, but the actual developers of IPS have refused to put it back in.

 

@Jeric put the list thing in as a stopgap measure, just to see if it would fix it without getting developers involved. Response has been mixed.

This is a profile field, that has been recently added, based on the feedback users have provided.

You can list members you consider as friends there. It works as a simple list of members you like, it doesn't have any specific effect on accounts, at least at the moment. 

This can be configured in the profile, upon clicking "Edit Profile".
