web Youtube and Netflix reducing quality in Europe (effects of Coronavirus)...

I guess some ISPs are affected. Some ISPs I know have local cache servers from Google and probably Netflix too, so they are not that affected, but I see an increase in traffic. Still, as with everything, the networks are planned based on normal demand and if there is a demand spike the network may not be able to handle it. Any upgrades take time especially now that the country is under quarantine.

I knew something was wrong with the quality but this... this is uncalled for

What is life? Is it nothing more than the endless search for a cutie mark? and what is a cutie mark but a constant reminder that we're all only one bugbear attack away from oblivion? And what of the poor hooman? Flank forever blank, destined to an existential swim down the river of life to...

an unknowable destiny?

So preventing server strain and crashing is uncalled for?

ummm why make this silly excuse ?

What is silly? Are you saying use is not up? Are you saying higher then normal use rates cant strain servers? What part of this are you trying to say is not real?

As for my actual opinion. They are doing what they have to, to meet higher then usual demand and hours that its generally expected.

The day our internet dies is when all goes to hell :lie:

Kind of surprised that I haven't noticed things really slow down from higher usage in my current area, but it's a college town where most went on spring break and were told they probably shouldn't come back. US though.

I do not use Netflix, so cannot say anything about it, but Youtube just changed the default setting to SD or 720p. I can change it to HD if I want to.

That's actually good IMO. People who want to have HD can have it while people who do not care get SD by default and use less traffic.

I have Netflix since 2016. Well considering what is happening at present this should have been expected. I can live without having full hd for the time being. Better than crashing servers and/or other more important services.

Why are they doing that? People need YouTube and Netflix, especially during times like these!

it would be to save bandwidth so more can use it,

but I still seem to get 1080p streams from YouTube and only havent when my virgin broadband cuts off sometimes (despite connecting my android tv box using composite cables so I can record it from my dvd recorder, meaning I should only have 480p)
