How and when did anti-bronies become a thing

Probably because it started on 4chan and of course when you see anything spammed anywhere you will get some who hate it. Though the community is anonymous it is very random and the variety of people on 4chan will mean there are going to be all types of people. Lot of people assumed bronies claimed to be fans of the show only to be edgy now the group isn't really hated to be fair.

Pretty much since it was realized the show had fans other than children. More so a reaction against guys who watched the show not conforming to dated gender norms. In the mind of haters, guys don't like cute things or watch cartoons. MLP was an affront to their concept of masculinity. Warhammer 40K was the symbolism of choice for it's graphic setting, lack of compassion and themes of religious zealotry against all things non-conforming.

Though the shtick got pretty old and began to die off around 2015-16 after the great hiatus when the fandom consolidated and similar media like Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, Star vs. the Forces of Evil and Adventure Time firmly cemented the change MLP brought as more than an anomaly.

Well while I don't know when exactly it happened, like TomDaBombMLP said, it was probably when MLP became mainstream. I also dislike the darker side of the fandom now as well, though when I was more dare I say it... Edgy... I was into the more darker stuff of the fandom like that creepypasta called "Cupcakes" which now that I look back on it, that stuff kind of grosses me out now. :sealed:

So old school term "Haters going to hate". I have found to be true in many fandoms and places over the years as a old school "nerd" myself.  Some ppl need to have that "foe/thing/enemy" to give a necessary  need to their lives, a reason to get up and live so to say.  So odd thing to bring up, when DBZ came out,  hit the market,  boys loved it!  We had Sailor Moon also come out, focused on girls,  and etc.  Such said animes where geared to male and female, yes?  Me,  I loved them BOTH!  But I love anime overall in any form as it comes in many ways!  Yet growing up as a young girl I was told I could only love "girly" shows,  and not watch the male more center cartoons.  Me: why? I LOVE Ninja Turtles,  Street Sharks,  X-men, Batman,  Superman, Swat-Cats, Sailor Moon,  Yuri on Ice, and many other cartoons/anime.  For me, it was not on the focus of gender, but the story,  style, craft and fun of watching something I LIKE/LOVE.   Hell I still watch anime/cartoon today and its now mainstream to say the least.  When it comes to MLP,  yes the focus was on "girls" but many of many different types of soul found something to love in it, so some ppl had to find a reason to "hate" it. Human nature in a complex thing we don't still understand,  sadly. But if you love something,  love it, just tell the haters to buck off,  its your life!:D

That is true since some people just like to try and ruin stuff for everyone else but I try not to focus on them since those types of people will always be there. I also hate that your parents said that to you but then again, I think most of our parents were probably like that. I'm not into anime too much but I don't shame those who are since we all have our likes and dislikes so like you said, be yourself and enjoy what you love no matter what others think! :squee:

I got raised by a single parent who kinda mostly let me freely watch what I wanted :devious:, it was the "outsiders" who tired to dictate how or say what I should watch as a kid.   But those early on expanded my understanding of the world. I mean 90's Xmen dealt with a lot of topics..and as a young person,  it did help me to see a lot of more open topics and grow as  a person even now. For MLP, I can see how many of us love it,  even times hate it ( given the eps :Cozy:) but it holds something we as now as fans love!

Oh that's good! I feel you though on the "being pressured by outsiders" part since my family thought that my mom should be pressuring their religious beliefs with their reasoning being that video gaming and being on the internet was invented by Satan himself and I'm sitting there like... Really? Don't get me wrong, I don't watch the show anymore but I still love all the animations, art, fanfiction, and video games that have been spawned thanks to the fandom. :squee:

Not sure but probably of all the NSFW contents bronies make. And probably haters think "we like the wrong thing". They have their point but... what's wrong with passion, eh?

Yeah, that wouldn't surprise me. I'm not into that kind of stuff but I won't shame people who are since we're all human and some of us may have similar likes and some of us may have different ones. Just people outside of the fandom tend to overgeneralize most bronies and assume they're into that kind of stuff just because it exists which isn't true for everyone of course but there's also nothing wrong with you liking that stuff. I also agree with that, there is nothing wrong with being passionate about something. :eager:

When the show became insanely huge, a lot of casual people were turned off by the concept of older men liking a little girls cartoon. It also doesn't help that a certain news station making jabs about the fandom.

I remember seeing a handful of anti-brony videos back when I was a fan of FiM at the time, and I tried not to look into it because it's very uncomfortable. It's best for me to focus on the brighter side of the fandom and have fun with it.

Yeah, I don't like those either. Especially Smile HD. That was edgy for all of the wrong reasons.:yuck:
