Grasping hooves possibly magical?

I like to call it "Spongebob syndrome"

Having a campfire underwater?...seems legit...

Holding things with a rounded marshmallow type...appendage...seems legit...

Don't forget that Spongebob Squarepans also has water underwater!

Dang it! when will cartoons ever start to make sense? haha :D

They work by being fictional cartoons and not bound to real physics. They are not the same as real hooves. There is no suggestion that they are magic either. They're just fiction.

Similar theory to @. Ponies have a harder outer hoof and a softer, muscled inner hoof. the muscles of the inner hoof allow them to grab objects. The frog pumps blood normally, but they grab by controlling muscle more directly, rather than controlling the blood pressure in the hoof. It is less versatile than a true hand (or a 'gripper'), giving them reason to use their mouth whenever it is practical.

Well, in my head canon I've reasoned that it's more of a 'mind over matter' thing and that ponies have to sort of will themselves to be able to grip things.

I could just say 'cartoon logic' but, honestly that feels like too much of a cop-out for me.

I suppose it's possible that Applejack has those wedged into her frog:

The scene that really hurts my head is during Pinkie Pie's "Smile" song, they show Ponies jumping ropeimg-1941414-1-KUbAnTY.png

You mean right before the rope started turning itself, and a moment before Pinkie helps herself out of a hole? This is a Pinkie scene. No logic, cartoon or otherwise, is applicable.

The point of ponies having hooves is for them to look like ponies. The point of them being able to use their hooves in various ways is to allow for the story to progress without having to spend time worrying about such trivial matters. Although, if you're going to analyze the show in whole, this is a pretty clear area of oddness that should be addressed.

Simply put, that's one of those things it is best not to discuss, since there's no scientific answer to it :P

I could ask the similar question:

How can she even do that with her hoof...?

Just, leave it be, imo :P

Agreed, we do not have enough information to be able to answer the question, much as we'd like to.

I've wondered how hooves work in the MLP universe. If the hooves work like they would IRL, it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to effectively hold anything, but in MLP, we see on a few occasions ponies successfully hold various items. (Like the stick in the example.) Is it just that hooves in MLP are different to those in real life? I guess it is an animated show, and isn't expected to follow reality, but I'd like to hear other peoples thoughts.

Yeah It's a cartoon, I mean in Apple Bucking season, AJ had a like a 10 foot drop face first and was fine, not to mention when RD was flung into the library after

yes its just a cartoon and how the hooves work is not all that important over all. some folks have fun trying to figure it out anyway.

will not knowing ruin the fun of the show not at all.

(I posted this on Equestria Forever as well but starting it here as well).

Ok, this just randomly popped in my head. Why not stop for a moment and think about all the possible situations/possibilities where the usage of hands and hooves differ? (example: holding a teacup). Then, if we don't count earth ponies, how would the pegasi do stuff for example? Unicorns can do almost anything.

So, concentrate on earth ponies and the pegasi. Smart and clever ones might come up with unicorn and hands differences as well. Also note that cartoon pony physics/possibilities are rather random (Pinkie Pie's actions obviously restricted here), for one example Applejack holding the candy sticks at Twilight's slumber party.

Then, if ponies can't do something with their hooves (or could, but would be difficult), what would they use instead? (Applejack using her lasso with her tail for example, ponies pouring liquid with their mouths etc.)

So this is what thread is for. Comparing human hands and all the ways ponies use (mouth, wings, magic, hooves...)

Oh, and keep it PG. x3
