gaming Favorite RTS Games

Hello everypony, this is about RTS games. I noticed there weren't many threads on RTS games.

I don't expect this thread to be popular due to RTS games being "low" on the "video game chain"

anyways, tell me your favorite RTS games.

I haven't played many. Civilization II and Brutal Legend are the only ones I think and between the two I can't choose. Civ II has the better gameplay but the story and music of BL is amazing enough to make it equal.

Actually, Civ II isn't even RTS, it's TBS so I guess that's out period. LOL

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings is RTS but it's more SRPG with RTS elements.

When I say low on the video game chain, I mean compared to things like First Person Shooters. Not many new RTS are coming besides Company of Heroes 2 and a few others.

Age of Empires 2 and the expansion, Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds, Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War games, and Sid Meier's Civilization V. I'd probably enjoy Star Craft but I don't own it and haven't played it much.

(edited)

My first game on PC was Red Alert.. good times. I liked Red Alert 2 as well. Age of Empires series is also great and can't say i disliked StarCraft either.. Also played Warcraft II and it was okay as well. (Funny thing is that i own Warcraft III as well, but never played the actual game, only custom maps).

What i don't like about RTS games or pretty much any games with online multiplayers is the idea of playing against random people. I have no motivation to "improve" if i end up playing against another guy every time. I want to be able to tell if i have improved enough to beat the guy who i couldn't beat before.

So that said, if anyone feels like playing AoE 3, i wouldn't refuse the challenge even though i was never good at it and haven't touched it in years.

Civilization and Halo Wars.

Oh and is League of Legends an instrument? (does it count? If so, I like that one too :) )

Yeah, I'm with everyone who mentioned Red Alert as their favorite. Though recently I've started to like C&C: Generals just a bit more than Red Alert.

LoL doesn't count, it's a tactical game. To be a strategy game, it has to have micro AND macro managing. LoL is purely micro, and it's only one unit.

Anyway, StarCraft: Brood War master race here :)

Command and Conquer (All of them from the westwood era)

C&C i feel still stands as the best RTS games to date.

Up until EA really took over and when they switched to 3D graphic everything just fell apart.

The newer C&C's just suck, and Generals 2 doesn't look much better.

But oh man the original games, I can play those suckers anytime and have one hell of a time.

Starcraft brrod war, however starcraft 2 campagin was amazing.

I hear that high-ish level StarCraft II multiplayer is all just spamming basic units because everything else has hard counters and therefore isn't worth the resources? And that there's very little real micro now, aside from, say, Zerg hitting queen injects on time, and having ranged stuff run away from melee, turn to shoot, keep running, turn to shoot, etc.

This was what I got from talking to one my friends, who is platinum rank or something.

Another vote for the Westwood Command and Conquers. Red Alert 2 being the best for me with Tiberian Sun being my second. However, Supreme Commander is probably the best modern RTS out right now.

I can neither confirm nor deny myself being the cause of electrical related malfunctions. Anyways, you wouldn't happen to have a jar of replacement magic smoke would you?

At high level basic units are really all that's made, unless you're an avid zerg player like my friend. In which case all you do is counter. I find the micro alot more versitile in SC2, mainly cos protoss make it that way, however Zerg macro is alot more to look out for with the queens. Good fun though.
