Earlier today, this thing appeared under the banner, it listed info, topic posts, and recent topic updates, before disappearing. Now it came back, is this going to be a permanent edition or not? It is pretty helpful actually and it should stay.

Here is what it looks like:

*Edit* this has happened to only a few people here so far.

Eh. I don't need it personally, it all seems redundant to me, as my strolling through forums already brings me access to all these thing quickly. An interesting idea though. Just glad it's not mandatory :3

Wait, by not mandatory do you mean you can disable it?? How does one do this?

Saw it not long ago. Turned it off after I noticed Arylett's instructions in her status update.

It's a new hook for IP.Board, this one: http://community.invisionpower.com/files/file/5643-ddk33-board-index-face/

It does several things:

  • show a random selection of currently online users, to visualize everyone who is part of MLP Forums
  • shows a list of the last few topics to get a new post - this replaces the "Recent Posts" sidebar hook we had.
  • shows a list of topics you have participated in that have recently been updated
The main idea behind this hook is to visually show off the "life" of the community. I quite like it, and think it adds a rather personal touch to the homepage that sets it apart from every other forum on the Internet. The hook does, however, come with an option to turn it off if you don't like it. Just click the gear on it or head into your user settings to disable it (or customize which forums it fetches topics from).

I was unsure at first, but then I realized I could exclude boards from the updates. Now it's awesome.

i dont like it

You're not alone. I really don't like it. This new addition clogs up the whole top of the main page and forces me to really scroll down. I'm interested in a great dinner, and I was delivered a very unorganized menu.

I don't think this is worth the time it takes to add in my opinion, way to big and if it is telling you what your friends made a recent post in or telling you what topics you posted in have new post in them, then couldn't you have a bar at the bottom of the page with buttons that pull up these options and you can see what post your friends recently made or what new post your recently posted in topics have post in them? takes a lot less space and seems to take a lot less time to make. Also the bar that you could have added on the bottom could show which of your friends are on, how many, what time it is in the forum, etc. or what ever you want, but I see how it is, go with the space consuming thing that could have been much smaller and have many more options to it. The bar would probably look a lot like the bar on the top, but have many more options to go through.

I love it. I love all of it. Everything might look a little awkwardly-placed at first, but it's incredibly convenient. Makes navigation more user-friendly, and the fact that it's customizable to an extent is even better. I'm telling you, the software just gets better and better and better.

On the negative side, unsurprisingly people are already not getting the best reaction from it. Well, that's the best part, the fact that it's optional for people who don't want/need it is just the final touch of perfection.

Said bar would actually be much more difficult to implement because it would need to be custom-developed. The AJAXification you're asking for would also be a fair bit of work.

This is a free hook I got off of the IPS Marketplace. It only took a few minutes to set up.

Don't need it cause I'm so active that it's redundant xD The only time I'd ever use this would be when I first come onto the forum in the morning and need to look at any topics that I may have missed while out, or asleep or whatever, at a glance. Outside that, it'll just sit there in disuse for me.

May I also note that if I wanted to go back to the previous update, would that be possible, I am assuming no, but I may never know...

Not what I meant, what I meant was, that I disable this and some things are gone from the side bar where it says status updates and stuff, not saying that's gone, but I was wondering if I could get those missing things back?

The only sidebar hook I removed was the "Recent Posts" one, because this new hook renders it useless. A lot of the feedback for that was on the negative side, so I saw this as a good opportunity to can it.
