I don't really know anything about sonic, but I heard that sonic breaks the sound barrier every time he runs. Rainbow Dash simply has the ability to go that fast, but sonic gets faster much easier. If this isn't the case, then I don't know because I don't know anything about Super Sonic or anything, and if you are trying to determine who can simply go faster, I'm sure there will be many many different answers from others.

I'd have to say Rainbow Dash. But, we can't count Sonic out because of his speed.

Well like you said you posted this on a MLP forum board... so everypony would say Rainbow Dash. Then again she can sonic rainboom his flank, causing him to spin out and slow him down. But he probably could give her a run for her bits. It'd be a tough battle BUT I think Rainbow Dash would win by a nose hair.

it depends, on air Rainbow Dash would definitely win but on ground Sonic will win by a longshot, although as Super Sonic he's as fast as the speed of light, and I'm not exactly sure how fast Rainbow Dash is when she performs her Sonic Rainboom.

Acording to the Screwattack crew (in Death Battle and Gametheory) Dashie is able to speed up to Mach 10 (7600 mph) and Sonic cant even break the sound barrier

 

 

As far as I know, the fastest Sonic has move in a game (because comics are NOT a valid source for ANYTHING) is on the last boss fight while transformed into Super Sonic if we estimate that the speed of the ARK plus his movement speed Sonic would be close to 15000 mph but that was because of gravity aceleration and initial space station ARK speed.

 

Rainbow Dash is WAY faster by any means.

I kinda agree with your post. But video games limit sonic's speed. Because our eyes can only handle so many FPS in a game. In the intro Sonic CD. Sonic is casually running and not even putting any effort into his speed. If you put him into Super Sonic mode or hell even Hyper Sonic mode he's just way to dam fast it's unreal. I hope in the show Rainbow Dash get's faster. I don't know if she is naturally fast or if she had to train to get like that. But it be interesting

I was a massive Sonic fan when I was in elementary school, but I haven't been too involved with it since then. You will probably think that I am horribly biased towards best pony, and you are most certainly correct . However I will attempt to prove my opinion as scientifically as possible, since I don't know the limitations of Sonic's speed and Dashie's haven't been revealed either.

I love this song. I went over to my friend's house after school to watch him play Sonic Adventure 2 and this song was catchy and very memorable. Notice the first line:

 

Rolling around at the speed of sound, got places to go, gotta follow my rainbow

 

Now then why would Sonic be following Rainbow if he were faster than her, hm? I find this incontrovertible evidence that Sonic knew of Dashie's superiority almost a decade before she even existed.

I give this to Rainbow Dash simply because of she can fly, take that away and I think they would be fairly even though I suspect Rainbow Dash may have a slight strength and endurance advantage.

This is a question that simply can't be answered. In sonic CD he can somehow run fast enough to freaking time travel and yet in the anime, he could barely outrun a rocket powered race car at speeds of 500 mph. You could say this is non-canon, but I believe that Sonic moves as fast as sega wants him to move, logical or not. His top speed is completely arbitrary.

 

As for Rainbow Dash, her top speed is obviously incredibly high and I'd say she could break the sound barrier, but how could she compete against someone written like that?

 

It's like the hulk fighting goku from Dragon Ball Z. The hulk is strong, but goku has the power of his writters behind him. He will no doubt get super saiyan 7 through some intense training or miracle and blow the hulk into next week.

In the Sonic Adventure manual, Sonic's top speed is described to be 3,840 mph. That translates to 1,716 meters per second

 

Rainbow Dash's top speed (Without the Sonic Rainboom) is mach 5. Mach five is 1,701 mps

 

So normally Sonic is a tiny bit faster than Rainbow Dash. 

 

However, if Dash preforms the sonic Rainboom, her speed instantly doubles to mach 10, thats 3,402 mps.

 

At that speed, Dash can easily outrun (Outfly as the case would be) base Sonic. 

 

If sonic goes super, he is able to go the speed of light. That is 299,792,458 mps.

 

Super sonic wouldn't even need to try to outrun Dash.

 

 

 

 

So in short, Base sonic is around the same speed (If not a tiny bit faster) than Base Rainbow Dash. If Dash goes sonic Rainboom, she can easily outrun base sonic. If sonic goes super, it's not even a contest anymore.

As far as I can tell from watching the old sonic cartoons sonic only really breaks the sound barrier when putting forth a lot of effort and at top speed unless he's super or hyper sonic in which case it's easy for him, however he's using the chaos emeralds to do that so it's an external power source, if dash was using them I'm assuming we'd see a similar effect. My guess on who would win? Neither, I think they'd just kinda keep going until the universe imploded or something.

A Sonic Rainboom on the MLP Wiki describes it as "when a Pegasus pony breaks the sound barrier". So we can determine that Rainbow Dash's limit is slightly above that, but that she can definitely break the sound barrier. Sonic the Hedgehog, on the other hand, can also break the sound barrier and go much further beyond - but only in supersonic form (Supersonic, quite literally, means "beyond sound").

 

Let's say that alone, Rainbow Dash is faster than Sonic. In supersonic form, however, Sonic is faster than Rainbow Dash.
