Roleplay World - Post Count incrementation removed in Roleplays

Okay, so now it feels like you are getting hostile. As I said before, I am highly competitive and I love seeing ranks and levels, It is why I play Battlefield it is why I play MVC3. Do I ONLY come here to post on RP? No. But it is a very, very significant source of posts for me.

Forums games and roleplays are way different. Forum games are for playing games with one word replies. Roleplays actually take more thought than a normal post for me (Especially when you are running one.) because I have to think through the mind of my OC or character that I am playing as and then act out as I think they would in a 200 character response.

You two are getting me wrong with the forum game shit.

I am saying that it is a DIFFERENT part of the forum. It isn't what makes a forum. They are both places to post in to have FUN, not have a stupid competition.

True, forum games takes less effort to post in, but they are still both made to have FUN.

And competition doesn't matter.

Do you think I post so much so I could be top poster? Nope, I do it because it is fun, and this place is my home.

And yes, I am getting very agitated with you, because you are insulting the place I call home by saying this place is turning into a tyranny.

The staff does what they do so people don't turn this place into 4chan, or other terrible boards.

The way I look at it, is that the Roleplay section is a cheat book, you'll rank up, but what satisfaction is it that you had to cheat to make your way up there? If you want competition, try to make posts outside of RP world

Do you enjoy "competing" with people who don't even know it's a "competition"? I'm sure "beating" hundreds of Blanks-Flanks who don't even know the RP World section exists must make you feel great.

Now, if you want to "compete" why not use all of that creativity you undoubtedly have to make creative and unique posts OUTSIDE of the RP World?

You guys are acting like I never post outside of my RP's which is very untrue. I post all over, if I see something that relates to me "gun bans" "Gay or straight" "Favorite episodes" "Do you like anime?" "legalizing marijuana" I post on it. I have posted ALL OVER, and I am sure you have seen me every once in a while, because I have replied to things that most of you have posted. I do spend most of my time in RP but that is because it is fun and creative, I am majoring in english at the college I am attending this fall. I plan to be an author (and a well known one at that). You have to understand, that while I don't agree with you, that does not mean I am a whiny spoiled 14 year old that posts stuff like

"Like ZOMG I am being opressed over here, call my IRL friends to back me up here!1!1!111." That is not what I am doing here , I am just simply explaining my point of view, and hoping eventually a compromise of some sort will be made.

Dude, we're talking about a GENERAL consensus about what is going on.

Just because you post in a roleplay a lot doesn't mean everyone should bow down to you.

It is true you post in other places. But that is what makes you known. Just because a roleplay thread you post in a lot no longer counts, it doesn't call for you to whine that the staff is turning bad.

Honestly, I don't know, I don't think I would leave entirely, but you would not see me as much, and I probably would be spending most of my time on other forums.

If you post everywhere else, you shouldn't have to worry about you're post count not going up from the RP World.

Here's a ProTip: No one cares about your brohoofs or about your post counts, they care about your approval rating. If anything, you should take advantage of the forums that don't increase post count, using them to up your rating.

Now, does that settle things? Keep posting those brilliant RP posts, and get all of the brohoofs your heart desires.

This.

Yes, a few of us joke around with our brohoof count. But just because we have a large one, it doesn't make us special.

Even X-fizzle doesn't care about it. He may brag, but it is all in good fun.

Look, I have explained my view and I respect yours. I do not agree with it but I respect it. Would I love to see a separate badge system for RPing? Buck yeah I would, but obviously I am the fool for talking about compromise and I should just keep my head down and my mouth quiet. I do apologize for calling MLP forums a tyranny, it is much less hostile then a tyranny. Now if you will excuse me I will be busy keeping my opinions to myself.

We all need to take a second to chill out and look around. We all have an account on possibly the best forum on the internet. So many sections and so many nice members. Moderators who reply and take your opinion into mind before making a decision. We need to all just SHUT UP and be appreciative.

I always see these arguments about something so petty and pointless, and then I see everyone ignoring one another after that because of the other having an opinion. You know what that sounds like? A hater. We are not haters. We are not one of them and we are much better than them. We are probably the only fandom to be so accepting and honest. We have some of the most artistic individuals in our community who make us art. We have comedians who make us laugh and writers who can make us have lots of emotions.

We have a beautiful thing here and I don't want to see it turn into another fandom with everyone raging at the person next to them because they have different feelings than them on a certain subject. Please for the sake of this community, don't turn into haters.

I may sound a bit extreme, but I see extreme fighting occurring and if I want to give my opinion on something then I will. I love this forum and the members, I love everything about it, but then we have these fights and all I see is unhappiness.

So start acting like a brony, with a shred of love and tolerance.

I might as well put in my two cents. Bare with me though, It's pretty early in the morning. (about 3 a.m). I've been roleplaying for almost a decade now. I've seen about every kind of roleplayer. Be it the one-liners, to the posters who can literally have one small actions and have walls of paragraphs to describe it with each and every sense. I've seen every type. When I first started here, before the character count. It was terrible. There were many people abusing the roleplay threads by a long shot. There were vast amount of one-liners and let me tell you. I was annoyed.

Now the character counts come in, it's not really a problem for me(excluding the OOC thread, but this isn't the place to talk about that ). I usually can get 225+ characters just on dialogue itself. However, there were still people abusing when posting via RP using fillers posts or white text. There has been a lack of quality, even with the character count.

It's a pity that you couldn't just allow the certain people who give quality posts to get the post count itself. However, it's favoritism so obvious that isn't going to happen. Still a pity.

So all in all, this is the case of the majority screwing over the minority. Be it there arrogance, lackluster posts, and/or abuse/spam.

To be honest, I haven't really care much about badge counts and posts and such, but others (such as Bronyonymous) care. I understand why you did what you did. So, C'est la vie. Just giving my two cents. You all have a pleasant morning, afternoon, evening.

Here is my whole view of this issue:

Why the hell does it matter what badge you have? Do you think it magically grants you some sort of superior position within the societal standing of this forum community? No, not really. True, some people for some strange reason make a weird correlation between post count and respect level, but when it comes to the bottom line, that number doesn't do anything.

Let every section count posts ... heck, remove post count for all I care ... I bet the only thing you'll see by removing post count are people that cared about something so superficial simply don't post as much.

Wouldn't it be more important in the quality of posts rather than the quantity?

Isn't simply being able to communicate with people that enjoy the MLP universe good enough?

Just saying.

I actually came here to say pretty much that. Why do we even have ranks based on post count if this is what it causes? How about we retool all the badges so as to seem more equal, then just let people choose which one they want? Or, if people still want ranks and recognition for time spent here... The system counts how long a person is online, and there's a little odometer/clock on everyone's profile. How about ranks based on how much time people spend posting? More time spent usually means a better post, and people found to be simply hitting F5 repeatedly can just be banned.

Either way, the post count simply would become nothing more than a number with no other distinction. How does that sound?

No one is going to go to the forum JUST to roleplay. This is a forum before anything. A place of discussion. Not pretending to be a pony.

Actually Crona, Role-Play is the ONLY reason I joined this site, so that's not always the case.

That being said though, I've actually yet to be able to embrace the full potential of this site for the primary reason I've joined it because of the fact that,

  • Posting Orders are almost Non-Existant. It's very easy for a pony to get left behind because they slept in too late or because they had a job that required them to be away from the computer.
  • The over all Quality of a vast majority of the posts in the actual Role-Plays I've seen have been horrid.
  • I'm actually afraid of posting because of the fact that I would be too descriptive in the game I was playing in for the other users around me.
  • Because when I do actually write out a decently long, high-quality post, I'm worried that a vast majority of anypony else is going to tl:dr and ignore most of the post.
  • And that As Arylett's point out, there are several that treat the Forum RPs as Chatroom RPs.

Heck, just throwing this out here, I didn't even look at the RP section before I joined this place. I read Arylett's Intro topics to the RP World here. I was interested so I joined. I never even touched the RP section for about a month and a half after I joined because I looked through the actual RPs and saw how many one-line posts and empty descriptions there were. I'll be blatantly honest, had I seen that before I joined, there is about a 90% chance that I would not be a member here today.

And the fact that users are wanting to lower the character minimum because the posts don't count anymore only solidified my beliefs and opinions from when they actually implemented the minimums that there a lot of members that were posting in the RP section that didn't really care about what they were posting. Everypony knows who everypony is in that respect.

"I think the minimum should be lowered because my post doesn't count anymore"

To me that translates,

"Why should I care about what I'm posting when it's not going to count?" And/Or

"I don't really care about RPing to begin with."

As several users have pointed out already. Role-Playing is telling a story. Everypony participating in a Role-play is essentially helping to write a fanfic based on the emotions, and the reactions of your character. If the only thing people are posting are one-liners consisting of only dialogue, then the emotions of that character will almost never be accurately portrayed, and to anyone that is just reading the story, will quickly get lost, and the only thing they will be able to tell is who is saying what. They won't see emotions, and they might see a very small bit of reaction, bit it's the attention to detail, that sets Role-Playing aside.

Now, that's not to say a shorter post "can't" portray an emotion. A pony could say, "I hate you steve" and it could either be menacing and meaningful, Light and playful, or even casual. The context, which is set up by the surrounding text is what creates that. Not the dialogue. A good way to think of it, You're trying to tell a joke, however, the joke is ineffective if the only thing you use from the joke is the punchline.

As I said, this rule change affects users like me the most. I definitely understand where you are coming from Bronynonymous, but the simple fact is, if making it to where the post counts don't go up will inevitably increase the quality of the RP section by weeding out the spammy like nature of it in its current state, then I'm all for it. I'll take the hit in post count because I'm not here for fancy bells and whistles. I'm here to be the best Role-player that I can be, and right now, I have very, very little to actually go off of. I'm currently looking in a couple new RPs on here hoping that the go a little bit better that a couple of the others I was in, and the one, high quality RP I was in died only a couple pages in.

All and all, I approve of this. Hopefully I'll actually be able to participate to the level of which I was hoping when I initially joined.

That sucks, that a few people ruined the post counting thing... But who ever still wanted to role play. Enjoys the roleplay will stick arouund to role play. Or find a better site to role play on, i for one wish i found a good role playing site to play on. But i did not, i left the site and came back to find out to had one. Then the posts counted and i was like... 'oh thats kind of cool.'

Though i do not care about the post count i'll still role play. But brony has a point... Now that you have to make long posts in role play, it would be nice if they still counted.

I agree completely. I've roleplayed for about the same amount of years as you. Annoyance also struck me when I began to rp. People like, "Hello." She said before walking slightly forward. I prefer detail, paragraphs. People who actually care about the roleplay - not the ranking. =]

I don't really agree with this. (not that it matters if I do or not)

Most of my posting goes to the roleplaying section, and that's how I rank up.

I feel that every post should count, because even if it's just roleplaying, it's still posting.

I think even in the silly section it should count. That's just fair.

I don't have much else to say in different sections of the site, so I may as well not be posting at all if you take away the RP post count.

I think this should be reconsidered..

If we count posts in cloudsdale then I'd probably already be on my way to being a Brony. People post way too much in cloudsdale to count the posts

Roleplaying was the only reason I joined the forums at first, before I joined I constantly lurked on the RolePlays that were the most popular, and read the story constantly, after a while I joined and post count didn't go up for me, yet I still enjoyed RP'ing, after a while, I found conversations with others enjoyable, and made some good friends, so I contributed to the forums more, post count doesn't seem important to me, RolePlays are just all in good fun :3

Er... I guess this works out. In a Lot of OOCs, There isn't just planning, but a lot of fun stuff the RPers do to bond and to get to know each other. So, it is better to have no post limit there.

However.... I do feel that there are some RPs that deserve to have a post count. In an RP that I do, The Good King, The average post is around 3 pages in google docs. Our longest post is 10 pages. So... it feels kinda unfair that we put a lot of work into those posts and they now wont raise our post count. Also, in a most of RPs, while most posts are quick, every once and a whilesome pony makes a long, deep, thought out post. It would be nice if those posts were recognized as well.

I'm just saying that even though RPs are just for fun, some of them are really well thought out. It's not always like cloudsdale where they just do quick posts that take around 15 seconds to do. Some of the RP posts I work on take a LONG time to do, like over a day of typing. I recognize that is not an NORMAL thing, but I know that I am not the only one, and others do that too. The reason behind this was to ensure that ponies couldn't 'cheat' and gain ranks like crazy from RPing. Now, gaining ranks isn't important (but it is rewarding to me to see that image change :) ), but when you work really hard on posts, it would be nice if they counted.

And Idea that I would have (um, you know... if anypony cares...) is if you're post is over a certain length, Say..... 5,000 - 10,000 characters (Even longer? It's just Rough number idea, the mods would decide anyway), their post would count. It may seem trivial... what's one (giant) post going to do? I dont know. but it seems fair that ponies that work hard on what they write should be able to add that for gaining ranks. That said, if you write short posts, there is nothing wrong with that, it just wont count. I dont know what are the limits are for the software the site uses, but That would be my suggestion if it was possible.

I tried to write this as more of a suggestion than a rant. I take RPing very seriously, and I enjoy it very much. A change like this wont stop me from RPing, but I do feel like it would make the experience more... not worth it (I dunno)? If there was a way to get raise your post count by making well made, long RP posts, I think you will see more ponies stepping up to do a better job with their posts. If they dont, then the ponies who make GIANT posts all the time will be rewarded now.

Er... that is my suggestion. I doubt that anypony, especially the mods, are even going to read this/care, but it's here if you guys want to try it out.

If you read it, thanks :)

Edit: After reading the entire thread and seeing the most petty argument I have ever seen (Sorry guys, it was), I think this idea might be a good compromise.... (Please dont kill me Crona...)

Aww, I was wanting to being to RP there. Now theirs less point. What's the problem with getting post counts for an RPG? Everyone can play. It is a valid section, unlike the forum games which is pretty much just posting useless spam.

Everytime I RP, the Character sheets and Development threads are business only. Nothing more that that. Everything else goes into PM.
