RoboGuy9000 103 September 16, 2012 Share September 16, 2012 I like FiM's animation and it's art style. But looking at story boards and other cartoons like Gravity Falls I feel FiM could do better, and to do that I feel traditional animation is the way to go. Does anyone else feel this way?
Twiliscael 3,960 September 16, 2012 Share September 16, 2012 Hell no, one of the reasons I love the show is that it is made with a program that really anybody could learn to use. It goes to show how almost anyone can, and probably should, make something great. Also, I think that the current style just fits ALOT more than the previous generations portrayed them as. Not to mention that it's alot easier to animate in flash because it can save the different poses, faces, ETC for the ponies. 11 I tend to take the high road, get stoned, and fly low . . . rcollinz13 428 September 16, 2012 Share September 16, 2012 I don't know. I feel like if they were to try to change the animation style it might warp our view of the show and why we gave it a chance in the first place. I like the way the animation looks, and I want FIM to stay the way I know and love it.
Flicker Sweet 3,391 September 16, 2012 Share September 16, 2012 I like this method that they use, it's very original. Very non-conformative. If they got rid of it things just wouldn't be the same

Cost wise, yeah Flash is the best way to go (though Adobe charges up the butt with their prices goddang 1000 bucks for flash, this is why piracy exists) but man, look at some of the storyboards, they're so expressive. Jokuc 8,173 September 16, 2012 Share September 16, 2012 (edited) NONONO NOPE. I do NOT want Friendship is Magic to change their art style. AT ALL. The simple flash style is one of the reasons why I like this so much. Random thing I made for no reason at all: Yes I know this is not what you mean, but I felt for posting this, OKAY? =o Edited September 16, 2012 by Mr. Nibblers
SonOfTheNorthe 412 September 16, 2012 Share September 16, 2012 (edited) Nope. All of my nope. Well, there IS one other way to animate this show... I seriously hope that if some some reason G4 ends, that's what G5 is going to look like. But I really love the current animation style. Don't fix it if it ain't broken. silvadel 1,393 September 16, 2012 Share September 16, 2012 Most certainly not -- I like it the way it is with no changes whatsoever to the art design. It is simple and clean and does not distract from what you want which is the plot, stories, and characters. 1 Silvadel, the Pegasus of Insight. moneyshredderofdeath 414 September 16, 2012 Share September 16, 2012 The style FiM has right now is quality and works well with the show. Considering that, there isn't any need to change the animation type to traditional. In a way, the fact Flash is used for FiM is impressive in itself because it proves that, in spite of many shows using the program shoddily, that Flash can be used for quality when a team puts in the effort.
Gone for good 1,593 September 16, 2012 Share September 16, 2012 (edited) You can do simple and plain art designs with traditional supplies, people. Granted it would probably knock the cost of producing an episode up a couple notches, but if the team suddenly decided to switch to traditional means I wouldn't mind at all. Besides, I have enough faith in the team that if they were going to pull something different visual wise they would pull it off with flying colors. Key Lime Pie 131 September 16, 2012 Share September 16, 2012 What the heck is wrong with you?!? Why would you even think about that?!?! There is nothing wrong with the current animation!! XUNUSEDXXX 3,459 September 16, 2012 Share September 16, 2012 Absolutely not. I love the way this is animated, and it really doesn't need a change at all. The Discord being banished for the second time scene was pretty awesome
Kyoshi Frost Wolf 41,468 September 16, 2012 Share September 16, 2012 Hmm...Umm...,Ehhh.....A-No. I love the show's animation style and I personally could not imagine it any different. Just right in my opinion
RoboGuy9000 103 September 16, 2012 Author Share September 16, 2012 Hmm, looking at these other views I can see why it's impressive. I never said I didn't like FiM's animation though, it's great, real great. So yeah maybe sticking to flash wouldn't be so bad

silvadel 1,393 September 17, 2012 Share September 17, 2012 Oh and with regard to it making the episodes "cheap to make" that is a very positive thing -- with it only taking about a quarter of a million dollars to make an episode, it makes it far less likely they will shut the show down so long as even a fraction of the audience is watching. It also leads me to wonder if ... it could be coerced into going further -- I mean I think the combined might of the brony empire could fund the episodes if we needed to. I know I would kick in my $10 if it meant I got a DVD with more episodes on it post the end of the series. Silvadel, the Pegasus of Insight. SpyHunterBG 26 September 17, 2012 Share September 17, 2012 Personally, the art style is a big thing as to what hooked me on the show. I feel like it would be a very poor move if they were to change animation styles. FiMs art style gives it personality, in a way.
AegisReflector 886 September 17, 2012 Share September 17, 2012 Just to let you guys know, "traditional animation" isn't something like Adventure Time or Regular Show or even Gravity Falls. Traditional Animation (or Cel Animation) hasn't been used in a hell of a long time, since the definition of traditional animation means adding cels onto storyboards and then copying the scenes onto a colored background. These are usually found in early cartoons like Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry. I think the last mainstream cartoon to do this was either Animaniacs or Batman: The Animated Series (I forgot, I read it somewhere a long time ago, but for some reason, those shows came up in my head). The first few Spongebob episodes were considered "traditional animation", and it was so unique at the time because other studios, like Cartoon Network, were starting to use more and more computer technology to help out with the animation while Spongebob episodes like "Help Wanted" and "Tea at the Treedome" were done entirely by hand with no technological assistance. But, I think like 8 episodes in, they decided to go mainstream and started to use computer frames for their animation. AT and RS are not considered "traditional" because they use too much computer software and less sketchwork, and they do not use cels or shade backgrounds. Coloring is done on the computer, and the animation is edited on the computer rather than on a traditional storyboard reel. But I digress, I just wanted to point that all to you to avoid any misunderstandings about the genres of animation. But, I currently like the story of FiM and I think if they want with a different view of animation, it would ruin the show's personality. Take a look at Dexter's Laboratory. The early episodes conceived used a lot of traditional animation, but then the reboot season contained a lot of computer animation which made the show's atmosphere a tad more restrictive and less believable. I think that if a show perfects a style, they should stick with it.
Autumn Skies 49 September 17, 2012 Share September 17, 2012 MLP:FiM has some of the best animation ever. I was shocked at how much effort the MLP team put into this show when I actually sat down and paid attention to the show. Gravity Falls, while it has good animation, it just doesn't impress me like FiM.
Dusty Soul 2,611 September 17, 2012 Share September 17, 2012 The animation is one of the many reasons I love the show. FizzyImp 1,838 September 17, 2012 Share September 17, 2012 I think traditional animation should only ever be used nowadays to make something look gritty. Whilst some of the traditionally animated shows I grew up with like 'Ren & Stimpy' are still amazing to watch, they just don't match the simplicity of a majority of today's computer based animation. Like many people, the simplicity of FiM's animation is one of the reasons I was drawn to it, but even though I dislike traditional animation, I love the traditional approach for the comic. 1 "My breakfast is plotting to kill me." Haven Celestii 9,385 September 17, 2012 Share September 17, 2012 Nope. It should totally stay the same. I, myself, haven't seen many cartoons done this way (unless I just don't know it at the time) and I really like it. It makes it stand out quite a bit. techno915 408 September 17, 2012 Share September 17, 2012 I love this style of animation. It is very simple, easy, and effective. It is also kinda similar in my opinion to the animation used for Phineas and Ferb (idk if they both use flash or not, they might, but idk that). Both shows' animation styles allows for smooth transitioning, which is essential to keep an audience IMO. There's a reason why we changed the animation style from the ~shivers~ G3 ponies. We wanted change. And thankfully, Lauren stepped up to the challenge. P.S. does anypony know if she is aware of this site or is on it? Idky, but all of a sudden I'm really curious about that. Forlong 1,726 September 17, 2012 Share September 17, 2012 They made a beautiful show with flash animation. They also have a great advantage to easily improve the animation without increasing the costs. Habro likes it because it's getting cheaper and cheaper. The animators like it because they have more freedom within the budget. Fans like it because it produces some great looking episodes. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. 1 Check out my YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5qXAcUzrizEHvorGalU5jg?feature=watch
