Opinions on swearing

So, I don't know if this is just me, but I DESPISE people who swear/use foul language (especially if they use it to excess) with a passion!! Something my wife has said once, "People who swear, are the only ones who really need a dictionary, as when they swear they are showing a total lack of a vocabulary and should have their heads examined" And I agree with her! I also feel that people that swear/use foul language show a total lack of regard to others around them!!!

What are your thoughts?

I don't see anything wrong with cursing so long as it isn't too frequent so that it becomes annoying as would any phrase repeated too many times. Words don't carry any objective meaning outside of their experiential context and curse words, though not socially acceptable most of the time, do sometimes put an extremely blunt emphasis on what follows them or precedes them. Cursing also actually helps dull sudden pain which is a good. Curse words have their uses and are appropriate in certain situations and I think society needs to grow up and realize that saying them doesn't invoke some kind of magical curse and that they have no objective meaning so they are harmless anyways. It is all about context and taste.

Depending on its use a word can expand or constrict your ability to use language. If swear words become every other word out of your mouth, then it seems silly, just as using pretentious words over and over can make people undesirable to be around. Too much of anything is bad. However, I honestly don't mind swear words in moderation - you can still have an ample vocabulary and explain the world around you with swear words.

I think swear words are just words more emotionally loaded than other words, so it's easy to use and abuse them. After a while of using them, they just lose that emotionally loaded effect and turn into something childish.

I'm not one for swearing personally, but I do get incredibly annoyed when people use it constantly, even to replace common words. ie: "That party was the f***ing awesome". Seriously? You couldn't just say it was awesome? Swear words overall really don't serve a purpose, but they can get a point across if used in anger appropriately, but even then I'm not a fan.

There is nothing wrong with swearing if you are swearing to show expression or to make a point. Swearing does not show a lack of intelligence, and there is no reason to believe so. I swear all the time, and I have an IQ of 145.

However I didn't start typing this just to wave my own flag, my point is that swearing is a universally understood method of showing displeasure. Swearing itself is not a terrible thing, it's how you swear that makes all the difference.

I will agree that people who swear just to swear can come off as obnoxious.

I don't really care for swearing. You know, unless it's a little kid on PSN/Xbox/PC/whatever online who continuouly swears just to be a dickbag. Of course, if I get angry at a video game, expect me to sound like a sailor. It's a natural thing for me :P. I tend to swear a lot myself :).

I find it odd that some people think it's okay for adults to use fowl language, but then don't like to say them around kids.

What's the point in keeping them from kids if eventually you're going to think that it's totally okay for them to use when they grow up?

Either they're okay, or they're not okay.

If you don't want it said around kids, then don't say it at all.

I mean, I can be a potty mouth at times though I usually try to somewhat regulate myself on the forums as not everyone appreciates it.

And in all it does not really bother me too much as in the end its just sound waves that some humans register to be offensive, and much of it depends on in what context they are used as to how offensive they really are.

I really don't mind swearing. I swear a lot myself and everybody in my family is okay with that( except my grandparents)

I think you should use them only in a very friendly ecosistem like when you are with your friends and stuff.

I don't care if you swear, I am not an easily offended person (for the most part anyway). I swear every now and then but it depends on who I'm around and what mood I'm in. I could be F this and F that around one person but then have the language of an innocent angel around someone else lol.

I don’t care too much but if it’s every word out of someone’s mouth it gets annoying.
