gaming Best And Worst Final Fantasy You've Played?

My favorite was VI. Hands down it had the best story line, the most memorable characters, and the most solid combat system out of all of the final fantasy games. All the characters are unique and have their own niche in combat. The combat is fast paced and utilized the right amount of tactics in order to succeed. Kefka was a villain who was easy to despise, was insane like a fox, and actually got what he wanted, which made him terrifying and made you curse his name for what he did, both before AND after he (spoiler alert) changed the world.

Least favorite, XIII. The combat was boring, the characters were forgettable, the story made me want to vomit. I got to pulse before I finally had enough. Beautiful as it was, it was just a disappointment to me. Since X they have been trying to fix the system they had, even though it hadn't been broken, and since then the franchise has fallen to low points.

I've played FF VII, VIII, X, X-2, XII, XIII and XIII-2

The best, IMO is FF VII. Damn. Sephiroth is just so awesome. And Hojo and Rufus Shinra. I just loved hating those bastards. I like the OST and the whole story of the Cetra.

The worst was FFXII. But XIII-2 is very close to it. I never really got interested in FFXII's story. I think it just dragged on too much, I guess, and I didn't like the gameplay.

For dumb, self-important fics about mythology, ponies and fascist griffons that can't figure friendship out.

And I'm just getting started.

I could see where you wouldn't like Auron, essentially being a stock "broody badass" character, but I still maintain that I could never accept a...well, "self-entitled, whiny, slightly cowardly punk" as a good hero. If anything, Yuna really should have been the main hero, but that prospect was shot in the foot the moment the writers decided to make her a total doormat.

@Auron

It's not even the "Broody Badass", because he doesn't even really brood. He's just the guy that is clearly meant to look cool+sound cool. Heck, his character outside his exposition about Jecht this is essentially being the guy who goes "Move it, move it, move it".

I appreciate Auron, I just groan when people say he'd make a better main protagonist than Tidus... perhaps young Auron could be, yeah. But young Auron was a prissy, strict, relatively whiny guy himself(even at the end of his young years). The transformation from that to his current "badass" self was off-screen, and only happened after he *SPOILER* died *SPOILER*.

@Tidus

Well, I hated Tidus at the start of the story, and liked him the best out of all the X protagonists by the end. :P So yeah, I didn't like that "early Tidus" either. Similarly, I disliked Wakka during the midgame(when his racist side really started showing), but started liking him once he worked past his issues.

And yeah, I really don't like Yuna. Doormats are often annoying even when they are characterized well.

Ha. Funny you should say that, because that's exactly why I'm not fond of Fluttershy.

Best one for me is final fantasy 9. I love the story, the backdrop, the music and the weird but wonderful characters. The villain Kuja also adds to the greatness of this game; He has a unique yet entirely creepy look, great hair and a vain, evil personality that just freaked me out (in a good way). How many villains say to the heroes "..I truly love you all". That gave me the shivers! Although final fantasy 7 is a close runner up.

The worst in my book is Final Fantasy 8; it was just so blah! Nothing stood out to me and got me excited.

Controversial to most people, My favorite was Final Fantasy X (10). Other than Tidus, who was a bit annoying, I loved the storyline and gameplay, especially Blitzball, that game was SO epic. I played it for hours on end. (I wish they would recreate Blitzball into its own game sometime.) Also, it has my favorite fictional character of all time, Rikku! (And the fact that both Rikku' and Twilight Sparkle's is Tara Strong.)

The worst for me has probably got to be Final Fantasy VIII (8). I mean, the characters were great, and SEED was awesome, but after that, storyline went right out the window.

Kuja actually made me waver on whether 9 or 10 is better in my opinion. He was a classy villain, and so much the masterful puppet master. The fact that he went on to destroy not only his home world with one Ultima spell, but then all of space and time (even if it was temporary) and you STILL never truly beat him.

Blitzball had the issue of being to easy unless you limited yourself on purpose- except for the earlygame Al Bhed Psyches, who literally couldn't be beaten without lucking out due to their Brick Wall goalkeeper Nimrook.

I've only played Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy XII and XII Revenant Wings, ._.

IV: It was hard, somehow, and I never even got around to finishing the game. But overall, I liked it. :)

XII: Meh. It was alright, I've only played it a few times, but thats it.

XII Revenant Wings: In my opinion, his one was rather easy, I completed it quickly. But, it was fun, otherwise. :)

imo, the best is the original Final Fantasy Tactics for reasons being; best protagonist, best job system, best story and quite possibly the most disturbing scene in the entire franchise, though again, imo, FFIV set the standard for FF games in the main series

Though honestly, I don't think X and VIII get enough credit imo(I guess I'm biased for VIII since it was my first FF game), sure they're both more flawed than other installments, both games had great characters, interesting stories(and while VIII gets ridiculous at disc 3, the stretch between 1 and 2 are by and large my favorite pieces of Final Fantasy stories ever), interesting protagonists(am I the only one who doesn't hate Tidus), great ideas and concepts for the level up and battle systems(I'd love to see them take another shot at the junction system), rewarding minigames(even though Blitzball's annoying), and that one guy in each game who is the epitome of BAMF among the long line of BAMF of FF characters(Auron and Laguna respectively). Part of me feels like most of the hate towards these two games is from just fanboys bandwagoning Spoony

As for my least favorite, it's probably a tie between X-2, XI, XIV, and XII; I just couldn't get into X-2 and XII, I dislike MMOs(XI and XIV), and Vaan is tied with Marche from FFTA as my most hated antagonist(though I'd probably give that to Marche)

Also, I'm gonna grow a pair and ask this, but am I the only one here who thinks FFVI and IX are more overrated than VII?*dontkillme*

For me, the best game in terms of just about everything that makes a Final Fantasy game a Final Fantasy game will always be VI. Great characters, great story, great gameplay, great everything.

The absolute lowest of the low, I've got to say, is what seems to be everypony's favorite: X. Let me just state for the record that Tidus, to me, is the most pathetic excuse for a lead protagonist that has ever been spawned in the history of fiction. To be fair, if they'd disposed of that little twat, made Auron the lead and done away with that godawful sphere grid system, this would've been one of my favorite games. It does have one of the best battle systems in the entire series, I'll give it that much. But Tidus...sphere grid...no bucking thanks. I think The Spoony One's lambasting of the game sums up every gripe I have with it, myself.

Oh, also could've done without the all creepy fanservice surrounding Rikku. Way to go, Square, sexualizing a 15-year-old girl. Yay! img-1480615-1-yay.png

Obligatory disclaimer: If you like FFX, good for you. For the love of Celestia, don't take my hatred of the game as a personal attack on you. We're all big kids here.

Well I'm not sure if anyone else knows this ,but I think this is cool, well at least for us. The voice actor for Rikku is Tara Strong. It kind of seems like what voice did she not do lol.

*goes to le Wikipedia to verify* Well! That certainly is her...haha. Never even knew. Not like it should be a huge surprise, it does kinda seem like she's done just about everything. The coolest thing though is looking through her animated work and seeing her voice multiple characters on the same show. Testament to the woman's talent, to be sure. wink.png

I love Laguna, I just find most of the supporting cast dull and the junction system very flawed(although interesting).

As for FFT, I agree on it having one of the stronger stories, but in gameplay it gets decimated by FFTA2(though FFTA2 has one of the weakest stories ever, and a protagonist that just doesn't actually develop- he just drops random facts about his past. Doesn't help that he's an airheaded doofus that's not very funny). Frankly, the storyline was too short, and Cid and Adelle needed more development time.

As for the overrated statement? VI can be argued to be overrated(but nowhere VII), I think, but few really rate IX as high as it deserves.

It's kinda like how people rate OoT as the Top Zelda, when it's the weakest 3D Zelda in gameplay and story.

VII is by far more ove

I agree with the junction system, while the whole Draw and Stock magic is retarded, I loved the idea of using your magic to boost your stats(and personally, I think the game can benefit from a remake)

I never played FFTA2 unfortunately, though I didn't like the main character in FFTA1, so I'm honestly not surprised that FFTA2's main character isn't very likeable either

I guess its just the sites I go to. I love IX and I think it's one of the best games in the series, I agree that the game deserves a lot of love, but I feel like a lot fans overobsess with the game too much(like the Operation Rainfall site, who praise it in spite of other games in the series

It's kinda like the OoT vs MM, where everyone bashes OoT simply because it's the more popular game and praise MM, it gets to the point where the roles are actually the opposite(I hope I said that right)

Yeah, I get it. I think it's simply that some MM(and FFIX) fans are tired of getting OoT(and FFVII) shoved down their throats, and are now being very vocal about it.

Personally, I find the 2D Zelda front more annoying. "You don't like ALttP best? Burn the infidel!". The Oracle games, even when not played as one massive game, are still superior to ALttP in my opinion.

And I love the cheesy Zelda cartoon. The Link it portrayed has more personality in his pinkie than all the actual Zelda series' Links together.

The Valiant Comic took that Link, took away some of the dumb stuff, and made what I consider the best take on Link in any media.

He wasn't incorruptable, either:

@Koori

There actually was a thread for one's favorite Final Fantasy installment, but not for what they consider to be the worst. Therefore your thread has been merged with said older one created by @AegisReflector and it was retitled to serve both purposes.

Best:  Final Fantasy VII.  Yes, after all this time, it still stands out as my favorite (and I have played some of the more recent ones, except XI).  Great gameplay, great graphics (for its time),a nd great story.  I was *floored* by what happened at the end of Disc 1.

Worst:  Final Fantasy VIII.  I gotta disagree with the first post in the thread.  I HATED the Draw system.  Getting magic spells through Draw was just so frustratingly repetitive.  And the junctioning wasn't that much better either.  To top it all off, I didn't really care much for the story or the characters.

I see a lot of people hate the Junction System in FFVIII. This makes me sad. I thought it was the most enjoyable gameplay mechanic in the entire series.

It is because unlike Final Fantasy II where you leveled up your stats by commands (which could get horribly abused when you can attack your own party members and this can actually raise your HP/Attack stats), VIII combines the traditional EXP system with a new one that summons the magic in your arsenal to customize your unique stats at any time during the game. This is great for when you want to experiment your characters for certain bosses. For example, Zell is obviously the Monk of the game, so your best bet is to put Ultima into his Strength stat. However, if you're going to go into an area that's filled with water creatures, switch that out with 99 Thundaga and his attacks will be even more affective. The system works to your advantage by not being so limited, as you can draw as many spells from enemies as you want.

Also, I'm willing to bet the developers thought that some abuse would be in store if players could draw unlimited amounts of spells, so that's why they had the monsters level up as you do to make the game more challenging. If they didn't, the game would be really boring and battles could be won with one simple punch to the face.

You forget the part where nobody actually leveled, and stocked up using Triple Triad and Card Mod. Also, lol at all but one final weapon(Irvine's) being available before the first disc ends.

The system is horribly abusable, more than any other in the series. And unless you really like Triple Triad(fortunately, I do), getting good spells is a chore no matter if you go the triad or battle draw route.

Also, the best way to beat the game? Never use the spells. Just go brute force with the best possible stat junctions. GFs? Worthless. Spells, outside Aura? Outdone.

I just finished Final Fantasy VII for the first time and out of the first 10 entries, I have to rank it as my least favorite.  It may have something to do with the fact that I have played VIII, IX, X and XII before ever playing VII, but I doubt it.  I thought the story was very weak and I really didn't connect with any of the characters.  It was irritating to me how the button configuration was different than the preceding and following games.  My least favorite thing, however, was the Bizzaro Sephiroth boss.  I rarely look at a guide and just keep them on hand in case I definitely need them.  The official guide listed the head part as A and the torso as B, however the actual game had the head as B and the torso as A.  For the life of me it took me close to an hour to figure out what was going on.  In spite of anything, it is highly unlikely I will ever play it again.

I was 15 when the original FF came out and i had it on my NES.  I still love it.  Final Fantasy VI is great too.  My favorite has to be FF VIII, though.  I love the characters, the draw system, fighting the GF's in order to get the GFs, the storyline.  I think my favorite part has to be Triple Triad, though.  I at times spent hours just playing that game and I absolutely love it.

Least favorite would have to be XII.  I absolutely hate that game.  I hate the new fighting system and I was incapable of getting very far in the game based off my frustration with the battle system.
