A Cutie Mark Weakness

I love the concept of the cutie mark. It conveys a pony's special talent (or characteristic) very well. It allows them to stand out from everyone else and sees them as wonderfully unique. Take Octavia. Her cutie mark represents her ability to play music with such passion and finesse.

I just have one slight problem though. What if the pony's got multiple talents? What if they can play music and be an inventor at the same time? Or what if the pony's a basketball player but can still perform accounting with such finesse?

Well just about all of them have multiple talents, it's just the cutie mark is the one that shapes your life the most. Take Pinkie Pie, she is a baker but her parties are much more central to her life than baking so she ended up with the mark that she has.

I guess whichever one they like more is their cutie mark?

I don't really think a cutie mark locks in your talent, and you can still have other hobbies and such.

Well what I really meant was that those talents are so prevalent you can make two careers out of them. Like music and biology. If I were a pony and I were both a musician and a scientist, which cutie mark would I have?

That basically tells the one you really hold dear to your heart. It tells you that this is what you were meant to do, but it's not set in stone, as Pinkie couldn't make a career out of throwing parties.

I suppose whichever one you preferred or whichever one you were better at. If not that, then the one that you were first then.

THEN YOU GET THE CASE OF THE CUTIE POX!!!!!!!!

But more seriously, I think the cutie mark that is on a pony's flank just symbolizes what the pony is especially good at. I mean, they can have other talents and things they enjoy to do pop up, but their main passion is the one that determines their cutie mark.

Like look at Michael Jordan. He was an excellent basketball player, but at one point he wanted to try out for baseball. He wasn't necessarily bad at baseball, but you can obviously tell that basketball was his sole passion. Thus, a basketball (or maybe a Chicago Bulls logo lol) would be his cutey mark.....if he were a pony, of course.

I'm pretty sure that a cutie mark is meant to represent your talent that your exceptionally gifted at, that doesn't mean that you can't do anything else.

For example, pinkie's talent is suppose to have something to do with partys, but shes also able to ice skate pretty well(In winter wrap up). This doesn't mean she has a talent in ice skating she just has learned how to ice skate and can do it well. Shes not specially gifted in it or anything however.

You understand what I'm trying to say here? A cutie mark is like their best talent they have, and are gifted at before they even know they are.

To paraphrase something said of astrology "Cutie Marks impel, they do not compel".  Look at Rarity's mark.  You would think she would be a jeweler, but no.  Her mark is only marginally related to her career as a fashionista.  (It's a shame she never met Elton John or Liberace)

Well, Cadance mildly addressed that issue in her starring book: Spring Heart Garden. She mentioned that one's cutie mark should allow anypony to be stuck with that talent. They can try, and make a living of other things, even though you don't have a symbol of it on your butt
