I finally started reading Dune by Frank Herbert and instantly got hooked. I know the movies are already there somewhere but I don't want to see them before I finish the books :squee:

Yes definitely read the book first. The second movie goes way off track.

Technically taking a break from reading non-fiction ATM to cool off my mind from reading a lot of heavy stuff, but I've been reading The Society of The Spectacle by Guy Debord and The Impossible Revolution by Yassin al-Haj Saleh.

The former has been enlightening as I have experienced some massive whiplash during volunteering and want to understand more about what we're dealing with in society ATM - somehow the text rings even truer today seeing as it was written before the advent of social media, feels horribly prophetic. Also interesting how it examines both free market societies and state 'socialist' ones.

The latter I picked up after the downfall of Assad as I wanted to understand more about the Syrian civil war and the rebel factions involved, it's truly horrible the situation Syrians have found themselves in.

Star Wars: Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader

Pretty grabbing novel so far! It's set a few weeks after Episode III, so a huge focus is about Vader grappling with his losses and I think it makes for a fine character study.

At first I rejected the zero, but that was because I simply didn't understand it. Now I do.

Its a story that takes place in 1906, about a wealthy detective and his network of agents from Chicago, Denver and San Fransisco combing the still wild west in pursuit of a ruthless bank robber that uses all manner of disguises and train systems to escape his heists. And gun down each and every witness while he's at it.

You wouldn't think gritty western heists and film noir style detectives would match up well, but this story makes it work. A bridging of two genres, two time periods in a fast paced (at the time) tech thriller.

This is the type of book that'd make an excellent mini series. Do check it out.

Remember that? Well it got a sequel.

It's late 1907 and our wealthy detective and his army of agents now hunt down the culprit behind mass industrial sabotage. Acts of terrorism on the growing railways heading west, with the killer using Unionist ideals, Anarchist fervor and Industrialist retaliation to bury his death traps made with the cunning of an engineer. And eliminating even the most vigilant of witnesses with the grace of an assassin.

It's also a good book. Go read it. Not too many detective stories that blend Noir mystery with Western grit.

I've never read a Clive Cussler book though I see them around sometimes. Where do you start?

I've only read the Isaac Bell novels. I'd start with the first book, The Chase. Part western, part noir mystery, part retro-techno thriller.

But it depends on what you're into.

The Dirk Pitt adventures are a cross between James Bond and Indiana Jones. Lots of sea based capers and adventures. Start with The Mediterranean Caper.

The NUMA Files are a spin off series of books in the same universe. Serpent is their first book.

The Oregon files is more espionage, heist and spy thrillers also in the same universe. But they aren't introduced into the Dirk Pitt book Flood Tide and starts with it's own book, Golden Buddha.

The Fargo adventures are pulp style treasure hunting adventures. That starts with Spartan Gold.

I've been reading Edgar Rice Burroughs sword and planet books. Most of his books take place in the same universe and there are series on the moon, mars, and venus. I'm reading the forth venus book.

On a Star Wars binge as of late, so just picked up and started reading Darth Plageius by James Luceno.

I've been aware of it since it came out in 2012, but never picked it up until now. Better late than never, I suppose.
