I won't get into to much detail, as I don't want to expose certain parts of my life, but worship of Loki is perfectly accepted in Heathenism. They just do not tolerate it at public events. Loki causes problems for the other gods, and it is believed that if a Heathen practices invocation of Loki at an event, he will undo the prayers of the participants and the goodwill of the gods.

I find it quite humorous you mention this, because I noticed your other post about Wiccan, and I was just about to mention Heathenism to you.

You've forgotten Heathenism it seems. It is a growing religion with ancient roots. Might be worth adding. (Odin, Thor, Eir, ect, ect.)

Good on ya, which god did you pick as your house god? I also requested that they add Heathenism to the list. So far, the Heathens I have met, they are not on a crusade to covert people.

I've heard that a lot of people look down on the worship of loki, mostly because of the poetic eddas portraying him as evil near the end. And the reason I mentioned lokeans is because that's what I am now, my patron is loki :umad:

Your a heathen? Hail friend! I too am a heathen! My patron god is Thor, god of thunder and lightning, and protector of mankind. I've been a heathen for almost six months now, and I'm very proud of this fact. Tell me, what god is your patron?

I'm afraid I might have mislead you. I am a buddhist who has the occasional privilege of being offered worship with others. However, from my limited experience and brief invitation to dine with heathens, I would say I am quite fond of the deity Eir.

It's alright, I got excited and assumed you were implying you were a heathen yourself, I guess I got a little ahead of myself. Anyway, I'm at least glad your respectful towards my gods and my fellow heathens. There are far too many people now a days who would point fingers and scorn heathens.

Eir...hmm...I haven't read much on him, but if I'm not mistaken, he's one of the Vanir, correct?

She, is the goddess of healing and mercy. A quite fitting god, if I may choose one for myself. I feel those that would scorn heathenism, would do well with participation in their worship and dining. It is quite the experience!

Alas, I myself do not know any other heathens besides myself and my brother, so I have not participated in any heathen dining, or parties. Sadly, I cannot even make an alter to my patron, my family is filled with Atheists and Christians, so they wouldn't react well to either one...but I still pray and toast to Thor and the other gods when I get the chance.

Also, since becoming a heathen, I have gained a much broader understanding and appreciation of other beliefs. I know many of and a, friends with, many people of different religions, Such as, Wicca, Buddhism, and even Satanism.

Satanism has always confused me a bit. If you believe in a Satan then you must believe in a God. If that is the case, why would anyone pick damnation? There is also an unfortunate connect with Satan and Loki, when they are really two different figures all together. I digress.

You can have an altar, and it be inconspicuous. Just find a red bowl, and add your offering there. If offering food, put in the bowl until sunset (or sunrise) and then move it to the woods. Be warned though! Thor has a mighty appetite!

Well, from my extensive research, I have my doubts that Christian Hell exists. It takes the name Hel from Norse legend, a frozen and quite place of rest, and the appearance of the Greek underworld. Fuse them together and what do you get? Hell.

In fact, I've asked my friend, who's a Satanist, the same question before, and he simply told me that Satanism's motto is pretty much "live it up and like it." It also symbolizes rebellion and freedom. So in other words, he doesn't care either way. Besides, the practices of Satanists are very different than Christians lead many to believe, no virgin sacrifices and baby strangling included, lol.

So I've heard! XD Do you think maybe a bowl of rainwater will also suffice as a temporary alter?

Edit: Loki isn't evil, he's just a trickster who does his job, all of his evil deeds were written in the poetic and prose eddas, both of which were written by a Christian who wanted to demonize the gods a bit.

I'm Roman Catholic.....so yeah.  i believe in God, Saints, and miracles.  (Spanish decent is another reason why).

BTW, I had a laugh with "Equestrianism".  Quite creative.

I see. I do not know enough about Satanism to have a full discussion about it. I don't know what sacrifices are appropriate, since it is limited to my experience with the Heathens I have had the luck of meeting. Eir for example, likes the color green. So a small green bowl would even suffice.

Edit: I also think the sacrifice has to do with how much you are asking out of your god.

Hmm...then I suppose a red bowl, filled with BBQ chicken and a bottle of honey bear would suffice, as that's what I hear he enjoys...also, my brother is a worshipper of Loki, and from what he's told me, the trickster loves sweets, enjoys hard alcohol, and adores simple, plastic toys...odd isn't it? But I suppose it's just his strange and spontaneous nature.

From what I understand, just as Odin's children eat the food from Odin, so do the animals eat the food provided from the gods. So if I understand it correctly, you should take the food to an altar in the woods for the animals to eat after an amount of time.

From what I've read, you seem to be correct. Thanks for the help!

Also, I'm curious, as a Buddhist, are you allowed to honor a pagan deity? I thought worship of deities was forbidden among Buddhist, but I may be mistaken...

There is a division in Buddhist. Those that call themselves Buddhist, and those that are Buddhist. For example, some Buddhist worship Buddha, even though Buddha himself said not to worship him. Buddha simply means enlightened, a Buddhist is someone who seeks enlightenment. To be Buddha, means to be enlightened. Nothing more, nothing less.

I worship with anyone willing, regardless of god so long as their god does not cause suffering and pain among men.

Hmm...that actually sounds like a very comfortable belief, but wouldn't that also make you omnistic, or henotheistic? I.e, you believe in all gods, or you believe in one god, but acknowledge others.

Look at it from another perspective.

-Worship brings some people peace and happiness.

-If their ideals do not brings harm and misery to others, that happiness is ok. (repression of homosexuals is not ok, as an example)

-I don't know everything, nor have I experienced everything. From the observation that I have one life to live. Shouldn't I experience as much as possible?

-Furthermore, if they are seeking congress with another so they may worship, do both sides not benefit?

-As a buddhist, I do not believe in anything that I can't observe. I observe everything.

They asked if I would like to partake of food and worship with them, so I did. I questioned and I observed. In that, I concluded that if I were to pick my favorite, it would be the god of mercy and healing. Eir. With no disrespect to the all-father, of course.

Well said. I was just curious, as you'd imagine. I enjoy observing and debating religions as well, and always try to be as respectful as I can of other beliefs. Like I said, I'm happy that you honor the gods in your own way, and respect your religion a little more, due to the insight you have given me. Thank you for the conversation, I will keep in mind what you have shared, but I must go now. I hope to speak to you again sometime, may the gods watch over you.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm a Christian.
I have no problem saying that.
Respect each other's opinions and love and tolerate! :-) You cannot influence, argue, or make suggestions to people for the sake of keeping the peace.
