books The Book Thread

I just read The Call of Cthulhu the other day. I thought it was pretty good. I need to try out some of his other stuff. On a semi-related note, I hear that Guillermo Del Toro is making a movie of At The Mountains of Madness.

Can we talk about e readers in here? And how much I have been reading since discovering Calibre? I own a Kindle and now I read a novel ever 3 days or so!

e-Readers are those things that you pack books into to read digitally right? Those would probably be pretty handy but they are even more fragile to water than books and I live in a place that likes to rain.

I have stepped on mine before and spilled water on it plenty of times! I highly recommend one if you love reading. Looks just like a real book, environment friendly, and cheap!

I own a Kindle, but don't really use it much unless I'm traveling and don't want to carry one or more books around. I guess I'm old fashioned, because I really prefer having an actual book in my hands.

The free 3G web browsing (albeit with a gimped browser) is pretty nifty, though.

Yeah I never use the 3g anymore, just because I have an iphone with a superior browser. I cant wait to get my hands on a Fire though.

Phones.

Some day I'll move forward from the dark ages of prepaid cellular service.

Someday I'll move forward from the dark ages of this blight upon the history of cell phones.

... but probably not for a while, because I am obnoxiously and unreasonably cheap when it comes to anything involving cell service. Egh.

My favorite book of all time, probably read it at least 20 times, maybe more. I also REALLY love the movie, even though it has nothing to do with the book.

I haven't read it, or seen the movie, but I have read Stranger in a Strange Land. It was good at first, then everything sort of turned into one big Dionysian cult.

I haven't read a lot of books in recent years thanks to video games and anime/manga but one series that has always been on my list of favorites is the Redwall series and anything else by Brian Jacques. Recently I got Castaways of the Flying Dutchman from the library and I love it as much as Redwall.

The only issue I have between Castaways and Redwall is the fact that...well...it's a different setting and characters going through the same basic plan that Jacques uses in all the Redwall books. People find clues to help their home, they gather a group to figure out the clues, they solve the riddles and save their home.

But they are still fantastic books.

I've also been very partial to the Silverwing series. Youth fiction it may be, but it will always hold a place in my heart.

That's odd. My two favorite series are Redwall and Silverwing too! I remember when I used to read them over and over again... must have read all of them at least ten times over.

I've spotted the Castaway books a few times in our library, but never got around to reading them.

Coincidence?

Recently got into Anne Perry and Bill Knox. Anne Perry writes pretty believable detective fiction set in the late 19th century. Bill Knox wrote a lot of novels set in Scotland from the 1960s to the 1980s, either detective or thrillers, and wrote them very well, very readable in a Dick Francis kind of way.

Right now I'm reading the A Song of Fire and Ice series.

I also second the Hunger Games series, seriously some of my favorite books, and they're coming out with a movie soon-ish.

Unwind by Neal Shusterman is probably my all time favorite book. Everybody should stop reading what they're reading right now and read this instead, because it is seriously amazing.

My all time favorite series/trilogy though is the Wind on Fire trilogy by William Nicholson. I never hear about the books from anybody else, and I feel as if I'm the only person who has ever read them, which is a shame, because they're truly awesome.

My favorite series of all time: Shannara, by Terry Brooks (also favorite author!). It's one of those series that has multiple different "mini series" in it, with like 20 books overall. These books are extremely well written, well paced, the characters are interesting and detailed, the story is epic... I could go on. This is honestly the best fiction series there is, imo.

After reading the first Castaways book I highly recommend it to you. It's a fantastic book. Starts out deliciously and just gets better all the way to the end.

For showing a guy almost completely naked, I'm guessing. Captain Underpants has been around since I was in Elementary School, I'd hate to see it get banned.

It is in the top 100 books that almost got banned. I have no idea why though.

  • 3 weeks later...

Time to resurrect this thread.

I'm reading Halo Glasslands, it's a very good book.

One thing I want to point out is that because it is based off the video game does not mean it's anything less than any other book you see. I hate when people tell me I'm not reading a real book.

But none-the-less it is an amazing books.

Though one of my biggest problems with the book is that Karren Traviss has some weird way of writing and at times when there is a lot of dialogue in a chapter you can easily lose track of which line belongs to which character.

Only halo book I have read is Ghosts Of Onyx.

I loved it.

But I also stole it from my drama class.
