They just want to sell their toys. It's not like little girls give two shits about the name.

Also, I don't see the toys as "canon". The tv show (and the game)  are one big advertisement for the toys, and I see the tv show (and the game) as canon. In the game she is called Bon Bon, so her canon name is Bon Bon.

Sweetie Drops sounds better, Bon Bon sounds nice, but Sweetie Drops is better.

 

Sweetie Drops sounds more pony-esquè, while Bon Bon sounds like a little bit of a bland name for a pony. It sounds like a name for one of those rushed OC's in Pony Maker.

 

So, yeah, I think Sweetie Drops is a better name for her. Bon Bon just sounds a little too realistic and human-like.

I think the cutie mark was the main reason people found similarities. Well, at least Sweetie Drops is her real name

The character had no name in the show until Episode 100 as far as I know. Merchandise name was "Sweetie Drops" prior.
