gaming PS3 Rumor

Moon Rat

Recommended Posts

so I have been repeatedly hearing rumors that Sony COULD BE doing somethings to the PS3's in which if you buy a game and play it on THAT PS3, it will only work for THAT PS3.

Now my biggest concern is that this actually comes to fruition because in my opinion, it will further ruin their sales because if you don't like that certain game, you're basically stuck with it...

you can't return it or anything.

My question to you is:

A. IS this actually going to happen?

B. if so, what are your thoughts on the matter?

Personally, I think it's one of their worst ideas and I am quite shocked they're even considering it...

1. I highly doubt that they would so such a thing, though Sony has proven to be stupid before.

2. If they did go with it, there would be some kind of loophole with it. Like if the PS3 didn't actually mark on the disk, but rather just a software security/memory, there would be a youtube video on breaking that security in the matter of minutes. I would never buy a Sony product again, and would just shame on the company. Its stupid greed. But I highly doubt they would do it.

That is interesting you mention that, I made a thread about it a couple of weeks ago. You can see it here

http://mlpforums.com/topic/44522-sony-has-filed-an-anti-used-games-patent/

They have filed a patent on this kind of technology which is not encouraging but maybe if we raise hell they will get the message and not do it.

A. Sony is a bit stupid with this kind of thing. Perhaps. However, it will probably kill the system.

B. Well, it's not the worst thing. In fact, I don't think it would affect a lot of people. However, it's the premise. Sony is trying to stop the sellage of used games, which most people don't like. So they may boycott sony.

I'm a PC gamer. So this doesn't affect me at all, though.

I've this rumor before and did some research on the matter. Here are my answers

A: I seriously doubt it.

B: They would be shooting themselves in the foot. There would be no reason to sell back games sure, but there would also be much less incentive to buy them as well since they have less value. Let's also not forget that most of a games sales are largely in the first week or two and at this point there aren't many used copies around, so there will be plenty of games bought new. It is only during the later months that used games have an effect and at that point it's not a huge deal. Also selling the game back, gives the customer more  cash which he can spend on another game (which may or may not be used). If anything, used game sales have a positive effect and at worst have little effect on the profits made

A: Not in the PS3, but I wouldn't be surprised if it found its way into the PS4. Sony has made stupid decisions in the past.

B: Not surprised. As I said before they've made lots of stupid decisions in the past. Here's an example of one: You remember that PSP Go? Well, guess what? If you were like me and owned a PSP 3000 with 32 games. You see those 32 games? Guess what? Absolutely worthless, because the PSP Go is freaken download-only. Nobody will buy your game discs online because of it. So you know what you get to do? You get to sell them to Gamestop! Those 32 games which costed you an average of about 20 bucks each, you now sell to Gamestop for an average of I don't know... 5 dollars a pop! Oh, you need another example of a stupid decision Sony has made? 3 words: PSN information leak. I had a PS3 back in the day, and my credit card information was in fact, stolen. I had to deal with the credit card company because Sony decided to wait a freaken week before telling me that somebody might have stolen my credit card information.

So yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if it found its way onto the PS4. I wouldn't be surprised to see it on the new Xbox either to be honest. Game companies are greedy as hell. All of them.

Oh, you mean like it works on PC since times immemorial?  :P

A: I don't think they will do that tho. They have enough to deal with, adding a war with customers would be unwise.

B: On the other hand, it would make sense, because neither Sony, nor game publishers make ANY money from re-sold (used) games. Only the shops get money from that. It may sound harsh, but it's basically (kinda)legal piracy that actually makes the middleman rich.

They have all the reasons in the world to stop that. But I think it will be in the form of exclusive codes for content, multiplayer and such, rather than limiting game to one particular device, as that would be pretty tricky to do without violating licence agreements.

A: Why is everyone using this format?

B: See "A".

It's definitely a rumor -- no company would make such a mistake. Not even Sony. Their attempt to stop the sales of used games only irks users with a hassling online pass. I doubt they would go so far as to make games self-system exclusives -- that would defeat the whole idea of playing your copy at a friend's house. It won't happen, we all know it won't.

Well, since Sony isn't letting up for playing used games on a console. I guess we could say, this should stay as a rumor or Sony will be boycotted.

Not even.  There are laws that mandate a company to allow the resale of previously used products.  So if Sony did this, they would be essentially breaking the law, unless the US thinks it somehow has the authority to invalidate international trade laws.

Wouldn't it be easy for hackers to overcome this "use on one console" restriction?  I mean, the data is right there on the disc to be read, just a few lines of code perhaps and the block can be overcome.

Honestly if they do this, the backfire will be massive. It's a stupid idea. It'll hurt them in the long run.

For the first part: I don't think it will happen, but Sony has done stupid things before, and pissed off fans/customers in the process.

My thoughts? I don't get the whole "used game" thing, I mean, shouldn't it be MY right to buy the game I want in whatever condition? Of course, there should be restrictions, like going to a guy on the corner and getting a bootleg copy of the game, but I should be allowed to buy a copy of a game when I want, where I want, and for whatever price I can find. I buy used games simply because if I don't like it, I can return it. There have been times when I've bought a game at Walmart or Best Buy, hated it, and got stuck with losing money selling it to GameStop or on Craigslist.

I hate all this licensing bull crap, once you pay for something, you should be able to use it how you want, within reason. If I buy a movie, I shouldn't be restricted to watching it on a PS3, I should ber able to hook up whatever DVD/Blu Ray player I want to use and watch it from there. Restricting the customers' choice is just going to cause the industry to go through another crash, nobody will want to buy games.

Thanks for the news on the rumor!
Anyway, my thoughts on this would be that it would NEVER HAPPEN. I mean, this idea is so stupid. It's just like Nintendo locking your NNID to that only console which made me lose my primary account when my Wii U first bricked.

Now going to the games you buy, I think that's going to far. You can't bring your game to your friend's house and have fun like playing PSASBR! (PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale) Now since this is only rumor, we shouldn't go hating on Sony... yet. (I have my pitchfork right next to me)

But seriously, being a longtime PlayStation user (since PS1), I don't think this would ever happen. I was raised as someone who loves Sony that's why I know a lot more Sony exclusives than Nintendo... [but I still love Nintendo more! Hehehe]
