Nothing can compare to the IBM ThinkPad 600X. (from 1999)

It's basically everything a good laptop should be, it even has good speakers! Runs like a charm with Windows 2000, I have replaced it with a ThinkPad X301 which is very similar, but just not the same.

Of course, quality like that came at a price, some configurations cost up to 13000DM which is 6500€ which equals 8500$.

Hahaha....I brought two ThinkPad 760s to a brony meetup with CO-OP DooM on them.  Granted mine is Mark II (better battery life, Cardbus) but those 600s were battery eaters.

Granted the laptop I'm typing this up has an MSRP of about $5000 or so and it's not an IBM.

My ThinkPad X31 (circa 2003-2005) has no touchpad and still gets the most use out of any of my IBMs.

Edit: The ThinkPad 760 was 1996-1997 and features a bunch of odd features that are only unique to it...

I perfer hand drawn animation to CG animation, and I think the current gen of game graphics often looks really weird and creepy, especially the people. I don't really like downloading things, I much perfer physical copies. And I'll never play a game with other people online, it's in the room or nothing. And I definetly perfer buttons to touch screens.

I agree with all of this.  I prefer things by hand than machine because sometimes it's more or less 'how good of combos are used' rather than skill.  Nonetheless I do have touchscreen laptops but they're not tablets.

I'm a bit of an odd case. I believe in newer technologies. I'm of the Gene Rodenberry school of thought, that science and industry are forces for good and technological progress should be viewed with optimism and ambition.

That said, I often use older technologies. I ride horseback and would use it for transportation if it was reasonable and I actually owned a horse. I'm not exactly technically adept so I don't understand the inner workings of a computer beyond the basic functions and what's accessible on the keys. Lastly, despite my belief in the Right to bear arms, I don't own a gun nor am I particularly keen on purchasing one. However, that's not because I have anything against firearms, that's because I'm a terrible shot and am currently training to use a longsword. Of which, I'm more adept at using.

To make matters more confusing. I like newer video games. I recognize the importance of the 18-bit era, but I prefer games with more complex stories, better controls, and more identifiable characters.

more identifiable characters.

I still prefer the Nintendo standard of 'character immersion' to where the character (Link and Samus) is mostly up to the player to feel and interpret.  Gordon Freeman is Valve's iteration and I like those better than identifiable characters.

I'm a bit neutral when it comes to old vs. new games (except FPSes which have gotten worse).

When I said, "identifiable characters" I meant it literally. I can hardly tell THIS is Mario!

as opposed to this.

I completely agree in terms of interpreting the character as one's self. That's one of my favorite gaming tropes. Like Freeman, Shepherd, Link etc. I also agree with you in terms of shooters. I can't stand to see perfectly good campaigns go to waste! Some of them are Tom Clancy-esque tales of courage and patriotism. But all you ever hear of them is . . . "LOL I got you! Teabag! Teabag! Teabag!" *gets shot* "What? You motherf[yay!]"  :(

Master Chief. The Demon of the Covenant. Scourge of the Flood. Savior of the Universe. Is most commonly simulated desecrating the corpses of his slain enemies with his crotch. . . . Makes you want to cry doesn't it?

Well I was referring to how modern First Pony Shooters tend to revolve around having to play to get anywhere (except experience) whereas older FPS games you could just join, leave, play for 5 minutes, etc. and still enjoy it.  Campaigns and all I still prefer just 'no big story just go in and beat it' rather than watching a movie (Half LIfe being the exception).

The reason why Mario has a mustache is because it was impossible to make an 8-bit mouth.

This thread is making me feel like an old man :(  I didnt realize PDAs were old. I use all sorts of "old" tech. I have that lovable 70's console called pong. works really well too. I use Polaroid cameras that date back to the 60's and they are bombastic. I have a typewriter dating back to the 1900's. My sister let me use her Apple 1( i think its called) I really enjoy the older tech. its more fascinating and some of it requires skill to use unlike todays tech.

PDAs became 'obsolete' with the initial increase smartphones back around 2005 (older Blackberries were merely PDAs with cellular capabilities whereas Palm Treos were more of the intiial smartphones alongside BBs of that era).  The iPhone came out in 2006 and from there PDAs shifted over to tablets.

I don't throw out my old tech, but I don't ever use it. I keep it around in case I need parts or something. Sometimes I'll blow the dust off of it, so I can compare it to modern-day tech, but I don't ever actually use it.

I love technology, and the fact that it's evolving so rapidly is fascinating to me. I keep up with the constant technological advances because it intrigues me. I'm curious, I want to see the next technological breakthrough. I want to see how it can improve our lives as individuals, and as a people.

If it looks like this, then yes.

If that's what you have, then it is very rare. There are only about 40-50 that are documented to exist. Plus others that haven't been documented.

Anyway, I don't use old technology that much. Except when it comes to video game consoles. They are my nostalgia and I grew up with Nintendo. The first system being the NES of course. The oldest piece of technology that I use is probably my PS2. If I had the money, I would probably try to start a collection of old technology. I have always been fascinated with technology. Old and new.

Haha, that is definitely not an Apple 1, but still a good collectors item none the less. Never had an apple computer, my first was an old Microsoft computer running DOS.

I don't use old technology much when it comes to computers and phones. But if we're talking about video games, then I am a huge fan of old school gaming. Call it nostalgia if you will, but I remember having more fun with my N64 and Gameboy Color, then I do now with my Nintendo Wii and DS.

It is really amazing to see how quickly technology has advanced over the years, and I am curious as to see how much more it can evolve. What really irritates me though, are the children growing up in this tech-savvy society. They don't seem to appreciate all of the advancements in technology that are right in front of them. It's probably because they never had to go through what we did when we were growing up. If you weren't born before the year 2000, then you most likely missed out on the dark ages of technology and gaming XD.

That's a picture of an Apple ///, a pretty darn expensive business computer in the early 80's that had multiple quality issues with the early models, and flopped horribly. While it's possible you used one of these, more likely, it was this:

images

The famous, Apple II. Millions were sold, and it was at the forefront of personal computing in the late 70's along with the Commodore PET and and the Radio Shack TRS-80. (They even made it all the way up to 1993, IIRC.)

(Sorry, I'm a huge "old computer" buff.)

We really have a different definition about what old technology actually entails. Jeez, I still have a whole bunch of music and vhs cassettes under my bed that I need to convert to something more versatile. *Not porn

Eh, I mostly just keep them out of nostalgia more than anything else really.

I suppose it's because where I live most people tend to outdate technology in a span of 3 years or more.  I still have a few tape decks (including the TalkBoy Deluxe) and I have seen an 8-track deck.  More or less I'm the only person that uses 10+ year old technology in public so go figure.
