Twilight Velvet and Nightlight: Goods parents or just plain lucky?

I mean, just look at these two:  Between their kids they got a heck of a lot to brag about.  With their "captain of the gaurd" son turned prince and "student of Celestia" daughter turned princess, it really makes me wonder just what Velvet's and Nightlight's parenting techniques were like. Granted, I do know that after a certain point that it is more about the choices their children make, but  parents do have a hand in what kind of ponies Shinging and Sparkle turned into.

 

 

 

What does everybody think?  Are these the faces of the greatest parents in Equestria, did they get lucky, or did they put something special into the morning feed?

I think they were just lucky, I don't think it was their parenting skills. I think they just happened to have two talented children.

Well, the mother's full name is Twilight Velvet, but I just call her Velvet since people refer to Twilight Sparkle as just plain "Twilight."

 

I think they have had some of a hand in it.  They were the ones who choose to enroll Twilight in magic school in the first place. If they hadn't, Celestia and Twilight might not have met.

... Possibly (though not necessarily) unrelated, after seeing that image... Does anybody else think Nightlight looks significantly similar to Trixie? I mean, I guess it's mostly just the coat color and the cutie mark, maybe a tiny bit of the mane... Actually, now that I think about it, her mane and tail coloration sort of has Velvet's pattern except with light blue instead of purple, and the cutie mark includes both a star and a moon...

 

Well, it's probably nothing. I'm sure they are both wonderful parents and don't hide anything from their children.

It's possible they had some influence such as teaching there kids to live up to their dreams. They may have tought them other things, but we will never know what.

But in the end it was Twilight's and Shining Armor that made the journey themselves.

 

I believe that did what they where suppose to do as parents and in the end their children where Finaly able to take care of themselves.

I think they where probably just ok to above average parents, but nothing amazing really. I mean they didn't do much about Twilight being reclusive, if they where amazing parents I'm sure they'd have devised a way to make Twilight become more social, but idk.

 

I suppose they enrolled her in Magic school and that was good, and I'm sure they where taught ok. I just don't think that it was as much them as Twilight and Shinning who made what happened happen. I think they stopped playing a part in it after a little bit. But they aren't bad parents for sure, just not amazing ones or anything.

 

I also didn't know that Twilights parents had cannon names . Great now I gotta remember them.

I do agree to this. Parents have a significant influence in their children but they are not the deciding factor. Some children choose to take their own unique path in spite of bad parenting. Being responsible has more to do with the individual's choices than their background. Shining Armor became a captain because of his own actions. Similar things can be said of Twilight. In the end, I think the parents did a good job supporting their kids - but were not the ones that got them their positions.

Probably both.  Good parenting is key, but if the kids don't have the opportunity or inner potential for greatness, it'll all be for naught.

We don't know who they are. They might come from an old and well respected bloodline. Perhaps it's tradition, wealth and social status that made their children shoot so high. It would be really interesting seeing an episode about their parents or perhaps childhood. Although I doubt we'll get anything so deep from the canon show. So much potential... Well I have to say good parenting. Twilights parents saw how hard she worked with magic and they thought that she would get even better if she got into the magic school. A good parent notices their child's potential and they try their best to help them reach it.

Twilight Velvet, I love that name for some reason, and I always called Nightlight Crescent Sparkle, probably because that's the first name I heard for him.  I can't even decide if it was just pure luck or great parenting, maybe both?  I can see that great parenting helped out a lot for Twilight, with them enrolling her in Celestia's school, and I'm not so sure for Shining Armor.  I want an episode that focuses on Shining Armor in S4, there's so much yet to learn how he got to where he is.

I simply think they're Equestria's equivalent of the Skywalkers.  The force is probably very strong in their lineage.  I seriously doubt it will ever be shown, but now I'm wondering what feats Nightlight and Velvet, or possibly earlier ancestors, accomplished magic-wise.  This may be the reason Cadance told Twilight she's not a regular old unicorn.

They are probably good parents but they also had a lot of luck on their side, they have a son who became a captain of the guard and married a princess and a daughter who was Celestia's apprentice and made an alicorn princess just one of these things happening no matter how good the parents are is very unlikely.

here's a fun fact about Twilights mom, that's what Twilight was supposed to look like, and that was a redo of the G1 Twilight

so G1 is the adventures of Twilight's Mom... and I assume a few other parents but that's just a theory

With such little backstory the parents have, we probably will never know. We can always just believe that Velvet was very, very intelligent and that Nightlight was strong - and quite possibly the family tree itself has a history of former guards and/or gifted unicorns.

Either that, or goddamn, these parents must be way to proud about their children at home.

Technically, do we even know for sure that they lie in Canterlot? They could just live nearby. And even if they do live in the "capital", that still doesn't necessarily mean they're rich.

Anyways, I think Twi and Shining's parents had a hoof in it, and brought up their kids to be knowledgeable, and made sure that they had a good education.
