I feel like a total hypocrite

So, now I bet you're asking, why are there Adventure Time spoilers in a thread about Twilicorn? Well, keep reading and you'll understand.

 

So, about Twilicorn: Everytime someone says that they hope Twilight turns back into a unicorn in season 4, I tell them that would be weak. Why would it be weak, you ask? Because the season 3 finale concluded Twilight's original story arc. It was a major wham episode, and to just backtrack like that would be weak. When they make a major change to a show like that, they need to follow through with it, even if it's a dumb idea. (I personally love the idea)

 

So, let's say that Fluttershy became a dragon. It could either be temporary, or permanent. But if it's temporary (which it should be) than she should turn back to normal by the end of the episode. Let's say that the writers decide that they want to keep Flutterdragon. If they tell everyone that it's a permanent change, than they have to keep it permanent. I would absolutely hate it if that were to happen, (not that it ever would) but If they make a wham episode about Fluttershy turning into a dragon, they had better follow through with it. I don't care how much I hate the idea.

 

So, what does this all have to do with my hypocrisy? Well, this is where the Adventure Time spoilers come in. You see, I'm a huge Adventure Time fan, and the twilicorn thing has reminded me of some things that happened in Adventure Time. At the end of the Season 2 finale, Princess Bubblegum, who is normally 18, turned 13. Than later in Season 3, she turned 18 again. I was happy that she turned back to normal, because I prefer 18 year old Princess Bubblegum over 13 year old Princess Bubblegum. 

 

And that is exactly why I'm a hypocrite. I tell everyone that turning Twilight back to normal is a bad idea, yet I am perfectly okay with Adventure Time doing the same thing. Adventure Time worked out in my favor, because I preferred 18 year old Princess Bubblegum, just like a lot of bronies prefer Twilight as a unicorn. If they do change Twilight back to normal in Season 4, those bronies will be happy, like I was happy when Princess Bubblegum turned 18 again.

 

So, I'm sorry for my hypocrisy.

No need for an apology, I think even those of us who are pro-Twilicorn (myself included) can completely understand where you're coming from.  Such major changes to characters are always a hard sell, especially when said characters have tried and true characteristics that have been ingrained, well established, and widely accepted by a fan base for at least a couple of seasons already, as Twilight did.  Now, granted, I don't think that much has really changed about Twilight's character as a result of this, other than her changing physically and maybe maturing a little bit more, but still, I get that this was, and still is for many bronies, a hard sell.

Oh no, I understood that you're pro-Twilicorn, that stuff I said about bronies still not sold on Twilicorn was addressed to that whole group of bronies in general, not you!

I think it works with Adventure Time because it's a totally different style of humor and plot writing than FiM. I personally don't care what kind of form Twilight is in. As long as she stays in the cast I'm perfectly okay with it.

I don't know that much about Adventure Time so I really don't know if what you said is really all that inconsistent at all but even if it is it is not like you are really harming anybody for having those opinions so don't worry too much about it. Even as a critic of twilicorn though I do agree that it would be a huge cop out if they just willy nilly changed her back because it would this whole completely meaningless it would be like if Goku could all of sudden no longer turn super saiyan anymore after his fight with Frieza in DBZ.

You know, I kind of feel like a hypocrite. I've always been one to say 'creators and authors should be able to do what they want with a story and not pander to the crowds.' And yet, I really do hope that they change Twilight back. Yes, it would be a big cop out, but I still would want it to happen.

 

The thing that gets me is, every time I have a knee jerk reaction to a changing franchise I try and convince myself that everything should be fine, but in the end almost every time, the end product comes out and my knee jerk reaction turned out to be right all along. This is just like the changes made to Final Fantasy 12 and its battle system, Ninja Gaiden toning the difficulty and Dead Space 3 getting co-op focus. I try and tell myself that 'if they handle it well it'll be great' and then it all goes to pot. Twilicorn has left too many people saying 'I'm not sure about it but I think they can make it work' and I have seen the same thing happen with various fan bases and the result is often... Well... People start referring back to 'the good old days'. That in itself has me worried.

Was Princess Bubblegum's change a conclusion of her story arc or connected to a larger plot or anything? We might be dealing with two entirely different animals here. I mean if the change was originally arbitrary its change back is less significant. 

 

Anyway hypocrisy is probably too strong of a word, I think Alicorn Twilight opens up a lot of new possibilities for the show if they choose to exploit them fully, but if the show is worse for the change, then I'd want it to go back.

I was the same way with Adventure Time. I too am a huge AT fan, and was glad that she turned 18 so quick.

 

And no apologies, were are all hypocrites some time, and that's nothing to feel bad about. Just don'd do it all the time!

I'm really happy Finn hooked up with Flame Princess after Princess Bubblegum did the "Just Friends" thing! Oh, I loved when Princess Rainicorn had her babies! Change is good!
