Sprite artist and GUI guy needed for Steampunk Pirate RPG

Hey, it's us Rainbow Cloud, we decided to end our last Pony game project Tales Of Equestria because we realised we would not be able to escape copyrights tongue.png

So now most of the team's regrouped to start a new Steampunk Pirate RPG with lovely airships and landscapes and the lot. It's a top down 2D RPG. We're moving along quite well, all we need is a sprite artist mainly to get some actual material into our build and somepony who's pretty darn good at graphics design and who's willing to stay dedicated.

We're situated over here http://rainbowcloud.x10.bz/forum/ and you'll probably know a bunch of the guys from the team already, mostly from here (Kolth, Rainbow Dashey, SteampunkNinja...)

Story teaser (will definitely change quite a bit by the time we're finished with it ^-^)

A string of port towns are destroyed by a mysterious airship, in one particular town the main character loses their home in the attack decides to search for the perpetrators. The military blame pirates for the destruction of the towns, meanwhile local pirates believe that the Navy privateers burned them down. They player decides which group to trust by joining a crew of pirates or becoming a privateer.

No matter if the player chooses the pirate or privateer crew, he/she will be told that a biased story of how the opposite faction destroyer their hometown.

After some time as part of the crew the ship will be ambushed and attacked by the opposing faction, some how during the fight both captains find them selves with guns at each others heads. Right before the players captain is killed the player jumps in front of the bullet and takes the shot. The opposing ship retreats and the player is rushed to the nearest doctor.

The main character has made a full recovery, and has even become 2nd in command on their ship. Everything is going great until they are confronted by a mysterious ship. Before they can contact it the opposing ship it immediately begins attacking with super powerful cannons and advanced weaponry, the player's captain is hit by shrapnel and collapses. The player and few loyal crewmen carry the injured captain to a life boat and escape as their ship is destroyed. They find a port, but by then it's to late to save the captain and in his final moments he gives the player control over his crew.

Whoops, forgot to mention that it's going to be a 2D top down RPG, if we can, we'll want to mix both 3D and 2D elements into the game.

Well, it's sad that Hasbro seems won't give the fan right to release game, no matter it's non-profit or not. I'm working on one actually, but we do have a plan to prevent this. We need a silver tongue. :lol:

 

Uhm, some questions. What software will you use? What programming language? Python? Stand alone? Offline? Online? The most important thing, what do you offer us with this game? A unique gameplay maybe? I mean, I bet people here are interested in pony game, no matter what, but for a non-pony game, you need to tell us what's the interesting part of this game you're making.

 

I'm a programmer and know a little bit about game development. Working on 2D game will be fun.

Uhm, some questions. What software will you use? What programming language? Python? Stand alone? Offline? Online? The most important thing, what do you offer us with this game? A unique gameplay maybe? I mean, I bet people here are interested in pony game, no matter what, but for a non-pony game, you need to tell us what's the interesting part of this game you're making.

 

I'm a programmer and know a little bit about game development. Working on 2D game will be fun.

 

Using Unity4, pretty sure our coder uses C++ It'll be single player offline.

 

The greatest bit we're wanting to mix up is the combat. And on top of that not only just your normal RPG style turn based combat but also some airship boss battles. I've got a variety of artists so we can mix up their different styles as we were doing in our last project. The great painted landscapes against the pixellated ponies actually looked quite nice. So I'm hoping to do something like that again. 

 

Oh we're also attempting a dual story, each going side by side showing different sides of the story during the same timeline but from 2 different characters in slightly different scenarios. So essentially two games that fit together ^-^ Our writing team's really good and we can create really inventive stories quite quickly to suit how the game's going. I think in our last project we had 5 or 6 completely different stories hehe :P they were all awesome.

Sounds interesting, but it will be a good idea to write the game play on your first post. That way, people can figure out how is your game. RPG is wide. Turn based, real time, etc.

 

If I may ask why do you use Unity to make a 2D game. I'm just curious. :)

 

You just need a sprite artist? Well, I'm just a programmer. :lol:

 

By the way, who is your story writer?

Unity just allows so many more options to play with P: we like mixing stuff together, we gotta keep it unique in some aspects.

 

TheSteampunkNinja Is doing the first write up of the story, I'll edit it and we've got Kolth and SinisterBronyz (he's hardly active here) doing dialogue. All through this process we do discussions on Skype to refine it as best as we can.

 

Eh, we've not done a lot of discussions on combat yet P:

I think you need to determine it first. Is it a turn based or not. Maybe like Ragnarok Online, but single player? It has 2D character in 3D world. It's kinda...cute but not too cute. :lol:

Well, we've just occurred with a little problem quite recently, so we may need a programmer if you're interested? P:

 

Also no sprites yet :/ and story is still under construction.

 

Apparently we've decided a mix of turn based and real time, but due to this 'little problem' I can't really explain much more than that atm P:

I'm more experienced with Python, so you may want me to use Boo for your Unity. Even so, I still can help your programmers with the algorithm and the system concept.

 

I see no idea how can you combine turn based and real time for your fighting system, but I do know some games in which players walk around the world in real time, and fight in turn based mode when they meet an enemy. If that's not what you mean, I'm not sure. Maybe I just forget. tongue.png

Alright, so for the main part it'll be real time combat, then for the big airship battles we'll have turn based combat so it'll be like a big boss battle but with a minigame feel P:
