I think technically, everything in the universe can be considered to be predetermined. Perhaps sometime in the future, I'm going to flip a coin and it'll come up heads. Right now, before I'm even holding the coin, we could consider its outcome to be predetermined. But in the present, I have no way of knowing that. This is why we say it has a certain chance of becoming heads. We aren't omniscient, we don't have perfect information, so we use probability to make up for our lack of information. I think the reason it's considered incorrect to say something has a 50% chance of happening is that if we did had perfect information, we'd always know for sure and we'd have no need for probability. But we don't have perfect information, so it's just easier to say the event has a 50% chance of happening. So if you want to be extremely pedantic, it's wrong to talk about it like that, but it takes a lot more words to explain the situation properly that it's fine.

 

In the case of the baby, I wonder whether their gender is considered predetermined the entire time before it's born, or only once their parent's DNA has mixed and they start forming in the womb. Is it correct to say the baby has a 50% chance of being a boy before the baby starts forming? I personally don't think so, I consider the gender predetermined at all times.

 

Then again, I might just be speaking nonsense right now. It's really hard to explain my thoughts clearly. But probability is one of my favourite areas of mathematics, so I'm very interested in this stuff. But this is really starting to feel less like maths and more like philosophy now.

There's a theory about the universe that says that everything about the universe is predetermined and it's just yet to happen. There's also a movie about that. One of my other favourite theories is that the universe keeps branching off into parallel universes based on what choices we make or don't make. IE, a parallel universe in which I wear my black shirt instead of my grey shirt, or a parallel universe where I requested cucumber to be added to my sandwich instead of green bell peppers. Or one where I was conceived five years earlier, or one where I'm bilingual in both Tagalog and English because my folks were stubborn enough to disobey teacher's orders and taught me two languages at once (because a young mind can, over time, successfully sort out the two languages, despite misconception).

 

You could spend a lifetime and a half contemplating this stuff (it gets pretty deep), or a couple days watching videos about the topic (it still gets pretty deep).

I think it's one of those color-by-the-numbers pages, but someone forgot to put in the numbers. Guess that means it's free to color however you choose.

 

On another, very unrelated note, I managed to cut my right index finger within the past hour, so I'm currently typing all this while not using it. (And yes, it's bandaged up and everything, for those wondering.) It's honestly much easier than I imagined it would be, even if I did just cheat and use my cut finger to write in that d in 'would' just then.

I think the idea that everything in the universe is predetermined is called determinism. I used to believe completely in determinism, but now I'm a bit on the fence about it. Hearing about quantum mechanics really challenged how I thought about determinism, since it seems at the atomic level the actions of each individual particle are completely random and it's only really meaningful to talk about how many particles will behave on average. For example, it's pretty much impossible to predict when a particular radioactive atom will decay, but we can very accurately predict when half of a sample of radioactive atoms will decay, which is what we call their half-life. I think the main question for me is whether these random behaviours depend on even smaller factors we don't know about yet which is why is appears random, or if these quantum events really are intrinsically random. My gut feeling is that it depends on smaller factors we don't know about, since this still allows for determinism. But really, I don't know.

 

The parallel universe theory is cool, but I ultimately don't believe in it. It doesn't really mesh well with the determinism theory I like so much. If all of your actions are predetermined, then you aren't exactly picking between one of two things and creating a parallel universe where you did the opposite, since you were always going to pick a certain one but just didn't make the conscious decision until just before you picked it. But then again, perhaps these ideas can work together. Maybe it was predetermined that you were going to create a parallel universe when you made a particular choice someday?

 

I love contemplating things like this. If you know of some videos talking about things like this, I'd be interested in watching them!

I think that's sort of true.

 

I also think that multiverse theory is half wrong, but I believe that the universe is infinite so all possibilities are true.

 

I also think that there can't be changes to the universe because when the universe is created, the butterfly effect determines everything that happens as a result.

Mods kicked down the doors and squeezed the life and creativity of everything here.

Votes were taken and ignored, pleads for help were responded with anger, hate, and disgust, lockdowns were enforced, and changes that have been made haven't helped the forums for the better. Hell, we've taken several steps backwards!
