Luna and the royal we in fics.

What are your opinions on using the royal we in a fanfic with Luna? Does it seem appropriate, or does it come off as stupid? (Note, this is post-nightmare moon.)

Personally, I find it to be somewhat endearing most of the time; but I would prefer if the fic also showed her trying to adapt to a more modern mode of speech, as well. For example, she may use the royal we in an official context (since she is speaking with the full authority of the nation like that), but not when she is alone among friends or in an unofficial setting.

I like it when she speaks modern, but occasionally something royal slips out. I find this to be the best kind of voice for Luna to use.

I think it's fine. It's indicative of her character and somewhat unmistakable for anypony else. It helps paint her nature for readers by showing that she isn't really acclimated to modern times. Maybe just use it sparingly so it doesn't become annoying (like spamming catchphrases does) or confusing.

Thanks for the feedback! I had decided to go without the royal we, as the fic is a while after canon, so she would be used to normal speech.

It depends. I hate it when people make a "defining" trait of Luna. As if she's too stupid to learn the "modern language". It ruins it for me.

 

That said, there's a great series of fics written by the awesome Aegis Shield on FimFiction that goes by the name of "Luna's Story" in which Luna is learning to speak like modern ponies. In this kind of scenario, I like it.
