We still see oodles of profanity

Maybe this is a bit off topic but why doesn't the Mlpforums have a profanity filter like the Wii U Forums have?

...just curious.

We are not blaming anyone or anything specifically. We have simply decided that "enough is enough" and are taking the chatroom away temporarily to make a statement. We tried to be nice about it, we tried to be lenient, and we tried to keep the innocents out of it. We still see oodles of profanity and things that ABSOLUTELY don't belong on a My Little Pony fan site. There has been enough bad conduct in the room that we decided closing the whole thing down would be more effective than dishing out warning after warning to individual users.

I haven't seen much profanity in the chat, and I'm on all the time. It's generally just us trying to convince someone not to off themselves, random video game conversations, meme references, football jokes, ironically homoerotic conversations instigated by a specific group of people (who I love btw), and other random things of that nature.

The MLP Forums chatroom is currently closed

Conduct in the chatroom room lately has, in one word, sucked. There have been inappropriate and not safe for work discussions left and right, countless arguments and flame wars, and more drama than I care to discuss. Either this ends, or the chat ends.

We have members as young as eleven and twelve years old in this community - chat discussions should stay at a level that is reasonably appropriate for them.

The MLP Forums chatroom will return on Friday, February 10th.

If there is trouble in the chat and no staff members are available to deal with it, simply follow these directions and FILE A REPORT.

  • Click the offending user's avatar in the user list on the right-hand side of the window to reach their profile.
  • When you've reached their profile, look to the bottom right-hand side of the window for the 'Report this User' button.
  • Give a brief explanation of the user's conduct. Include a general time that the incident occurred, as well as any relevant text snippets you may have available. Press submit.
We even put a video demo together of the report filing process - it takes less than 40 seconds!

http-~~-//www.screenr.com/PE9s

All reports will be reviewed and acted on appropriately; if you think something is borderline, report it - it's better for us to know about it and not need to act on it, than to not know about something that we would have acted on.

If you value the continued existence of the chatroom please help us keep it clean. Every time you fail to report inappropriate behavior, a Fluttershy cries. Think of the Fluttershys.

I feel this is very dumb idea but I agree that shutting it down was a good way to stop the nonsense. But seeing how poeple are acting this oprotch is not smart shutting chat room down will just make things worse an bring your donates to a holt as well. poeple that pay should have the choice at chat others should just have a regular chat I run chat rooms an have well paying customers to but I see how the sites run i am prowed to be here I exept your choice to shut down the chat room but that will quickly kill your sit as I have learned good d every pony. Totally unexpected! Besides, gets boring listening to trolls talk about their usual things, plus it gets really dead after what, 20 minutes. Also some of the chat moderators need to pay more attention to the activity going on. Edited by Samthelegoman

Why don't you guys increase the requirements to join the chat? So, instead of a minimum of 5 posts, bump it up to the Minecraft server's 40. It would filter out a lot of the newer ponies, and hopefully some of the profanity as well.

But of course, there are some of the older folks that participate in these *ahem* "oodles of profanity", so I suppose that can't be stopped, unless we start banning people from the chat room.

Still, I think raising the requirement up to 40 might be worth a try.

Pretty much this. Profanity is here and there, but it is sparse and we keep it to almost none when some of the younger users are on. Yes, I should have definitely reported what I saw (both profanity and spam), and I will do so from Friday on. Moose suggested a filter that turns profanity into pootis...I think he may have been on to something. Other than that...we do lift the spirits of some of the more depressed members, we do love our video games and memes...the sporadic nature of it makes one thing lead to another quickly. Basically, it can only exist if we keep ourselves in check by remembering two things: that the report function exists and that this is, at the end of the day, a MLP forum.

Well this was awkward.

I leaved the chat as the home page, with the forums and facebook, but i first opened facebook tab and while lookning at the chat tab said "Community Message", i thought "Maybe i got logged off", then i opened the chat tab and i readed "Chat has been closed".

My reaction:

Or send the max chat users back down to 20. Make it a premium and a privilege to remain inside the room. Try to have a chat monitor in there a decent amount of the time to kick users who are idle/spamming to free up a spot for someone who would actually contribute to the chat.

or, opposite end of the spectrum

Anything goes. Place a NSFW disclaimer upon entering and relieve the forums from liability what goes on in there. Encourage flagging/reporting super serious offenses like nudity, gore, death threats, excessive bullying, things of that degree.

I agree filter your chat rooms it's not hard

I disagree, it's not chat filters we need. Everyone needs to realize that we're in a place of love and tolerance. We want a sanctuary away from the evil that is The Internet.

In other words: Quit talking smack and giving the site staff-members a hard time.

I've only ever been into the chat, like... once, so this is a non-issue to me, but there's something I'd like to know regardless.

Why the heck was Zoop being a dick to everyone in the chatroom with lots of swearing and tomfoolery beginning at roughly 6 PM Pacific Time?

( :P)

Hmm... shame such a thing has to happen

I don't usually participate in the chatroom so I really haven't seen the poor conduct the chatroom got suspended for, but I trust the mods have their reasons.

From what I've seen posted above some of the stuff just seems silly. I guess we abused our fun a bit too much :P

When the chat comes back I hope people learn from this and calm down. I got enough drama today and its a shame I have to come to my main safe haven just to see more silly drama.

I found something quite ironic. The video that feld0 made showing how to report a user, uses the word "Dick" which, by my standards is a ( and quote) " inappropriate and not safe for work " word.

I am now confused as to what the definition of a "inappropriate and not safe for work " discussion or word is.

I under stand that the video was not in the chat, however that video is public (and somewhat advertised) and can be viewed by the members of the community "as young as eleven and twelve years old "

Allow me to quote the board rules to clarify.

Keep the foul language down. Swearing is not forbidden on MLP Forums, but we kindly ask that you keep it to a minimum. Not only is swearing out of place in the My Little Pony universe, but some fans who visit this site may be much closer to the target age than you and will not enjoy seeing the F-Bomb drop on their screen. Swearing is strictly prohibited in topic titles and tags.

The odd expletive every now and again for the sake of emphasis or light hearted comedic effect (such as Feld0's video) is fine. But when such words are over-utilised, or used in inappropriate contexts (such as thinly veiled sexual remarks and the like), then we have a problem. Overall, it just comes down to common sense; there's a time and a place for everything, foul language included. While we do regard this as an all ages community, for the sake of avoiding an over-restricting set of rules, we allow a bit of 'love and tolerance' towards strong language, so to speak.
