Well there was the Pound as people used to call it.

 

Then a few years ago the internet started its Bro phase and it was renamed the Brofist.

 

It has also been called the Respect Knuckles.

 

These all seem to come from variations of the handshake and high five!

I want to say brofists came largely from Pewdiepie since they were a sort of signature to end his videos on at one point. I grew up with them being called fist bumps. Memory has me recalling them being somewhat common in media since the 80s at least.

It didn't always have 'bro' in it. =/ I always understood it as "fist bump". Even in MLP, it is officially a "hoof bump". This forum should have called it that, too.

Fist bumps is what I remember them being called, which is pretty much as it is today. I never noticed any particular evolution of it except the title ‘brohoofs’ which is unique to MLP anyway.
