Dr. Frasier Crane 319 May 22, 2013 Share May 22, 2013 1.) How old are you? 15. 2.) What is your level of educational attainment? Currently year 10 in high school. 3.) What groups or cultural identities other than Brony do you self-identify with? Goth, geek. I'm also part of the Half-Life and Portal fandom, and I'm also a furry. 4.) What attracted you to MLP and brony culture? The variation in the MLP fandom and the high numbers of high quality fan works. The show itself is humorous, intelligent and well written, and it also breaks the stereotype of ponies being only for little girls. 5.) Do you consider MLP-related activities to be your primary hobby? It certianly takes up a decent percentage of my hobbies, but not my primary hobby, no. I mostly make fan-art, read fanfiction, watch the show and browse the forums. 6.) What percentage of your leisure activities would you estimate are related to MLP? Around 35 to 40%. Not that much, to be honest. I'm more involved with friends and music, and I'm definately more active in other fandoms. 7.) What portion of your friends also consider themselves bronies? I have two brony friends. 8.) If you have non-brony friends, are you ‘out’ as a brony to them? If so, has this affected your relationship with them in any way? My non-brony friends were pretty accepting. Surprised, but accepting. My male friends were a bit disappointed and teased me for it, mainly because they were 4chan users, but they soon learned to just accept it, as long as I didn't rub it in their faces. 9.) Do you feel that bronies as a group are put upon or stigmatized on the internet? (Or society as a whole? Yes, especially in society. I guess society is not used to this dramatic breach of the common stereotype, but it's the lack of knowledge and understanding on why we take interest in the show that news articles and other media fail to point out that makes society see us as freaks or peadophiles. I guess media twists the truth a bit. +~ Liebe ist für alle da ~+ My Steam: http://steamcommunity.com/id/shikarilukari
Apocalyptic_Unicorn 240 May 22, 2013 Share May 22, 2013 1.) How old are you? 18. 2.) What is your level of educational attainment?I'm currently in British College, which usually equates to the senior years of High School, but I'm planning to go to University and study film. 3.) What groups or cultural identities other than Brony do you self-identify with?I wouldn't really say I was in another group except for Bronies. I'm a part of numerous fandoms though. 4.) What attracted you to MLP and brony culture? Not sure really. Loved the show, and the community gave me a chance to talk to other fans, since none of my friends watch it. 5.) Do you consider MLP-related activities to be your primary hobby? Hmmm, maybe not my primary hobby, but its getting there. I expect it will be my primary hobby in the next few months. 6.) What percentage of your leisure activities would you estimate are related to MLP? I'd say a good 60%. 7.) What portion of your friends also consider themselves bronies? None. One of them watches random episodes of the show, and listens to my ramblings, but that's it really. 8.) If you have non-brony friends, are you ‘out’ as a brony to them? If so, has this affected your relationship with them in any way? Yep, I'm proud to be a Brony. Initial reactions were a mixture of "Don't care", "That's cool", and "What the hell is wrong with you?", depending on the person. A bunch of them make fun of it, and I just shrug it off, some of them think its quirky and'll listen to me talk about it, and others stopped talking to me, or kept arguing with me about it. They can crawl into a hole for all I care, really. 9.) Do you feel that bronies as a group are put upon or stigmatized on the internet? (Or society as a whole?) Indeed. Trolls fuel the fires, and in general, I do think that traditional gender roles are responsible for most negative perceptions. Its not just the internet anymore though, more and more media institutions are giving Bronies exposure, usually not positively.
Your Pal Skippy 3 May 24, 2013 Author Share May 24, 2013 (edited) Hi everyone, I really appreciate that so many of you have taken the time to answer my questionnaire. I've been the cataloguing the responses as they are posted and am looking forward to generating some hard numbers about them. I'm already seeing some things I didn't expect (especially with regards to age clustering), which is great since I'm working on this project to try to get around the prevailing stereotypes of your group on the web. Ideally, I would like to get at least 50-60 responses to add a tiny bit of weight to my conclusions. By my count, as of this post I have 28 respondents, so I'm openly appealing to other members of the forum to chime in. Also, I'm currently working on a group of slightly more in-depth questions which I hope to have posted by the weekend, possibly in a seperate thread. Finally, if possible I'd like to do at least 2 or 3 one-on-one interviews to add some flavor to my project. If anyone would be interested in talking to me at length about their experiences and perceptions as part of the Brony community, please feel free to either send me a PM here on the forum or shoot me an e-mail at skippytheskeptic@gmail.com. Once again, thanks for everyone's help! Love and Peace, -Skippy (Edited to correct a spelling error.) One sec I have not heard that word in a while. stigmatized past participle, past tense of stig·ma·tize (Verb)Verb 1. Describe or regard as worthy of disgrace or great disapproval: OK, Bronies are a very odd phenomenon as far as the internet goes. Of all the Love/Hate out there on-line, The Hatred of Bronies seems so unreal compared to just about anything ells. BaneShea 10 May 24, 2013 Share May 24, 2013 (edited) 1.) How old are you? 20, soon to be 21. 2.) What is your level of educational attainment? Some college. I'm in my third year. 3.) What groups or cultural identities other than Brony do you self-identify with? I'm the nerdy type, I enjoy anime, and I listen to metal AND country *gasp!* 4.) What attracted you to MLP and brony culture? I was seeing a lot of interesting MLP things on the web and I started wondering why anyone could enjoy that. So I watched it to see what the hype was and here I am! 5.) Do you consider MLP-related activities to be your primary hobby? Only when I'm in class, really. I'll doodle ponies among other things, like celtic knots. Outside of the classroom, I have waay too many hobbies. Beading, geocaching, origami, collecting four leaf clovers, gaming,...well I guess I collect the mlp blind bad ponies, too. 6.) What percentage of your leisure activities would you estimate are related to MLP? Maybe 40%. Most of it is chatting with a lot of brony friends or looking at pony pictures. 7.) What portion of your friends also consider themselves bronies? About 50%. The other half either don't care, are somewhat interested, or really HATE ponies. 8.) If you have non-brony friends, are you ‘out’ as a brony to them? If so, has this affected your relationship with them in any way? Yep! I honestly don't care if someone thinks less of me because of who I am. It has... There's one 'friend' in particular who once made me leave the house in tears because of something nasty he said about bronies as a whole, including myself. Another friend once sat down with us at lunch, and as he was sitting, said "You know what I hate? Bronies." And then proceeded to go on and on about us. He had no idea about me, apparently. I spoke up and he had this shocked look, and hasn't brought it up again. 9.) Do you feel that bronies as a group are put upon or stigmatized on the internet? (Or society as a whole?) Yeah, I do. I hear about it too much. Mostly just people who don't understand and refuse to understand, throwing around accusations and calling us names. It makes me sad. Some people outright avoid me now, as if I have an extremely contagious disease... Edited May 24, 2013 by BaneShea
Leavinh 313 May 24, 2013 Share May 24, 2013 1. How old are you? I am currently 18 years old. 2. What is your level of education attainment? I am a recent high school graduate and I plan on starting college in the fall. 3. What groups or cultural identities, other than Brony, do you self-identify with? I'm a relatively big fan of anime and kind of a gamer, but I mostly play older, "retro" games. 4. What attracted you to MLP and Brony culture? I heard about MLP a lot around the internet, so I decided to check it out. I started watching episodes of season one and discovered that I really enjoyed the show and could not stop watching. I later found out that there was entire culture when I heard music from and about the show. 5. Do you consider MLP-related activities to be your primary hobby? I would definitely say yes. Whenever I'm online I tend to have something MLP related open, whether that be a forum, music, the actual show, etc. Plus, before MLP, my main hobby was writing music and MLP has even found a way into that. 6. What percentage of your leisure activities would you estimate are related to MLP? I would say probably 70-80% 7. What portion of your friends also consider themselves bronies? I have no friends who consider themselves bronies at the moment 8. If you have non-brony friends, are you "out" as a brony to them? If so, has this affected your relationship with them in any way? Yes, my friends know I'm a brony. I did lose one friend because of it, but other than some weird looks and some very weird conversations, they all seem to be fine with it. 9. Do you feel that bronies as a group are put upon or stigmatized on the internet? (Or society as a whole?) I personally have not been stigmatized on the internet or in real life, but I do know that there are some places where being a Brony is not very easy. But besides some trolls and some very closed minded people, I think the internet and society are starting to understand that it is okay to genuinely enjoy something that is not in "your demographic". the_jetfighter 94 May 24, 2013 Share May 24, 2013 1.) How old are you? i just turned 18 2.) What is your level of educational attainment? as of right now im in academic level courses at high school, i am hoping to achieve my papers in heavy-duty mechanics 3.) What groups or cultural identities other than Brony do you self-identify with? I guess one could call me a whoovian, and when i entered the brony fandom i had just left the furry fandom, i was also apart of the sonic fandom (long time ago) and i still am touch and go with pokemon fandom stuff 4.) What attracted you to MLP and brony culture? i had a friend that annoyed me so much about the show that i just gave in a watched it, and it stuck. i like to think that the most important reason that i watch mlp is because the characters are more relatable than other shows, the mane six all have actual faults that actually drag them down. most other modern shows don't have character depth like that. 5.) Do you consider MLP-related activities to be your primary hobby? No, although i draw lots of artwork, and animate lots of pony stuff, i have to prioritize. and unfortunately mlp cannot be on the top of that list 6.) What percentage of your leisure activities would you estimate are related to MLP? 25%, due to the animation, drawing, and playing an active role in the brony community 7.) What portion of your friends also consider themselves bronies? a very small amount, the only time i watch it with most of my friends is when we are all drinking! 8.) If you have non-brony friends, are you ‘out’ as a brony to them? If so, has this affected your relationship with them in any way? I could care less if they think less of me as a brony or not, sure there are some jokes about the stereotypes of being a brony here and their. but for the most part im just myself, MLP has not changed my personality that much as though my friends have thought of me any different 9.) Do you feel that bronies as a group are put upon or stigmatized on the internet? (Or society as a whole?) But of course, our society cannot handle a group of open-minded people like bronys, but it is because we are open minded that we can look past the stigmatization and hatred, after all. we are one of the only groups that actually believe in our slogan, Love and tolerate the friendship of magic. anyone can become an artist, but a true masterpiece can only come from someone who is truly in touch with spirit and mind

I play a lot of video games, watch videos, and read comics so I can learn more about backstories on comic book superheroes. I watch a lot of anime. 6. What percentage of your leisure activities would you estimate are related to MLP? Not a lot, for now. That will all change until I write my first fan fiction. 7. What portion of your friends also consider themselves bronies? A very small amount. Only, me. 8. If you have any non-brony friends, are you ''out'' as a brony to them? Antismurf9001 1,271 May 24, 2013 Share May 24, 2013 (edited) If you wish to interview me, feel free. However, I can't really do an audio/video response. If this is a problem, then ignore me. 1.) How old are you? 20 years old 2.) What is your level of educational attainment? Currently in college 3.) What groups or cultural identities other than Brony do you self-identify with? I sort of think of myself as a jack-of-all-trades, at least from a 'nerd culture' point of view. I'm a bit of a gamer (video games, tabletop RPGs, strategy card games, etc.), a bit of an internet fanatic, a fan of certain anime, fantasy novels, and movies (Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc.). 4.) What attracted you to MLP and brony culture? I think it was the adorable animation to be honest. I have a weakness for things that are cute, and learning that there was a massive community behind this certainly helped me to finally give it a chance. 5.) Do you consider MLP-related activities to be your primary hobby? No. It's a large part of what I do on the internet, but it impacts very little other than that. 6.) What percentage of your leisure activities would you estimate are related to MLP? While on the internet, perhaps 50-70%. Otherwise, probably less than 5%. 7.) What portion of your friends also consider themselves bronies? Exactly three of them (that I know of), which is well under half. Oddly enough, they're all female too... 8.) If you have non-brony friends, are you ‘out’ as a brony to them? If so, has this affected your relationship with them in any way? My group of friends from home don't know, but my group of friends from college do. I don't really force it into conversation though, so it doesn't affect our relationship. It gives them something to torment me with every now and then, but it's all in good fun, and if they weren't tormenting me about MLP, they'd do it about something else. 9.) Do you feel that bronies as a group are put upon or stigmatized on the internet? (Or society as a whole?) From my experiences, no, but I tend to only frequent places where they wouldn't be stigmatized. I also admit that I'm somewhat afraid of this, which is why I do my best to keep my bronydom a secret. Do you consider MLP-related activities to be your primary hobby? No, although I spend a lot of time on MLP Forums. 6.) What percentage of your leisure activities would you estimate are related to MLP? Hardly any. 7.) What portion of your friends also consider themselves bronies? Only one of my friends is also a brony. 8.) If you have non-brony friends, are you ‘out’ as a brony to them? If so, has this affected your relationship with them in any way? My close friends all know, and they don't really care. 9.) Do you feel that bronies as a group are put upon or stigmatized on the internet? (Or society as a whole?) Do you consider MLP-related activities to be your primary hobby? No, simply something I enjoy "on the side" of my regular activities 6.) What portion of your friends also consider themselves bronies? None (not counting friends on this forum, for obvious reasons) 8.) If you have non-brony friends, are you ‘out’ as a brony to them? No, but it is a secondary hobby. 6.) What percentage of your leisure activities would you estimate are related to MLP? Around 30 to 40 percent. 7.) What portion of your friends also consider themselves bronies? None. 8.) If you have non-brony friends, are you ‘out’ as a brony to them? If so, has this affected your relationship with them in any way? I have told them about the fandom but I haven't said I was part of it. They thought it was odd but didn't care. 9.) Do you feel that bronies as a group are put upon or stigmatized on the internet? (Or society as a whole?) Bronies usually do have a bad name on the internet because of our stereotypes , like if were all cloppers or pedophiles. The people that mostly hate bronies are usually just trolls and other people just don't care. Thank you for the signature Jenny Wakeman.
Yamato 1,348 May 24, 2013 Share May 24, 2013 1. How old are you? 17, 18 next month. 2. What is your level of education attainment? Just finished high school, A's & B's in all AP classes. Some college courses in math (up to trig), social behavior, and politics. 3. What groups or cultural identities other than Brony do you self-identify with? AMURRIKAN. Car-lover. Doctor Who fan when I'm in the mood. 4. What attracted you to MLP and brony culture? Several friends became fans, at which point I thought, "You know? There may be something to this..." One morning in an act of extreme boredom, I watched an episode, and that was all she wrote. 5. Do you consider MLP-related activities to be your primary hobby? I'm sure I would not take so much time out of my day for such activities if I actually had any other hobbies. I've either burned out or lost interest in most other things. Video games and Netflix are really the ways I spend most of the rest of my time anymore. 6. What percentage of your leisure activities would you estimate are related to MLP? I don't know, somewhere between 30-50%? Depends on how I'm feeling on any given day. 7. What portion of your friends also consider themselves bronies? Roughly 75%. 8. If you have any non-brony friends, are you ''out'' as a brony to them? If so, has this affected your relationship with them in any way? All my friends know I'm a brony (you know, I still don't like calling myself that. It drives home just how uncomfortably "into it" I am with this fandom. Not that it's a matter of choice, these little buggers are more addictive than crystal meth!). It has not affected things in any way, shape, or form. 9. Do you feel that bronies as a group are put upon or stigmatized on the internet? (Or society as a whole?) As a general rule, no. But every once in a while someone puts on the Pants of Intolerance. This is the greatest OC of all time.

SCS 7,537 May 25, 2013 Share May 25, 2013 1.) How old are you? I am 16 years years old. 2.) What is your level of educational attainment? I have just recently completed my sophomore year of high school (10th grade). 3.) What groups or cultural identities other than Brony do you self-identify with? Introverts, romantics, spiritualists, intellectuals, and artists. I am not claiming that I consider myself intelligent enough to be an intellectual, as I have plenty of learning to do. I just identify with them as a group. 4.) What attracted you to MLP and brony culture? I love My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic because of how positive, spiritual, inspirational, and beautiful it is, combined with its beautiful art, breathtaking music, masterfully written and loveable characters, and wonderful storylines. I love the brony culture because of how kind, tolerant, considerate, compassionate, and intelligent the majority of the brony population is. I have found several people on MLP Forums who I identify with so well. Being a part of the brony community is an honor. 5.) Do you consider MLP-related activities to be your primary hobby? I would say no. While watching My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, thinking about it, reading fanfictions, watching fan animations, using MLP Forums, etc, are some of my favorite things to do, I need variety. So, I spend time on other things in addition to MLP. My primary hobby is using the internet. However, my top two favorite things to do on the internet are to talk to my friends, and MLP-related activities. 6.) What percentage of your leisure activities would you estimate are related to MLP? I'm not sure. Some days I'll spend a lot of time doing things related to MLP, other days little to none, since I like variety. While My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is without a doubt my favorite thing in the media, I still like to watch/listen to/play other things for variety. 7.) What portion of your friends also consider themselves bronies? One of my close friends in real life is a brony. Another one of my best friends used to like the show, but I don't know if he does anymore. Another friend of mine still likes MLP, but not as much as he used to. Another friend of mine at least used to like MLP, I don't know whether or not he still does. I know, but am not friends with three additional people at my school who like MLP. I know a lot of people online who like MLP, and not just on this site. I'm an admin on a different site that's not related to MLP, but has a lot of bronies on it, which is awesome. 8.) If you have non-brony friends, are you ‘out’ as a brony to them? If so, has this affected your relationship with them in any way? Some of them. One of my best friends is pretty much against bronies, so I pretend that I'm not one whenever he brings it up. However, I told another friend of mine that I am a brony, and he thought that was lame. That hurt my feelings, but I still consider him to be a friend of mine. He's just not one of my closer friends. However, for the most part, I keep my love for My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic private outside of the internet. 9.) Do you feel that bronies as a group are put upon or stigmatized on the internet? (Or society as a whole?) Yes, because our society has a bad habit of stigmatizing people they disagree with and/or do not understand. I know I have done this myself to other groups of people before. I believe that humankind can change for the better, though. One day, people will no longer be intolerant of one another.
