Could the Equestria Girls Trailer Secretly be a Stroke of Advertising Genius?

So I had an interesting thought. Remember back before Season 2 ended, how everyone was thinking, "Meh, a wedding two-parter. It'll probably be decent, but nothing super-good." and then we were all BLOWN AWAY by how amazing Chrysalis, the changelings, and the songs were?

 

What if DHX is doing this with Equestria Girls? What if the trailer makes it look like a very cliched high school movie on purpose? They could have chosen tons of clips to show us, but it seems like the ones they chose made it look like a typical high school move. They might have had a reason for it - that reason being that it wouldn't get our hopes up too high, and we would come out of the theater absolutely blown away by how good EQG was.

 

I'd love to hear your thoughts/opinions on this ^-^

You are absolutely right. I think this is exactly what they are doing. Im not sure about amazing songs, but it will certainly give us a couple of surprises.

That's exactly what they're doing. It's why they released a new trailer today to further bring in people to see the movie. I'm sure up until now many people thought it didn't look anything exceptional and wasn't really appealing. I too wasn't really into Equestria Girls and had no hope for it but the new trailer showed us this is no ordinary high school movie.

 

Demonic Characters? They really aren't joking here..... It's going to be another A Canterlot Wedding basically.

It's pretty obvious that's what they are trying to do. But the leaked images ruined it. XD

 

But let's remember that a lot of people didn't like Canterlot Wedding (I happen to be one that did like it though). The main problem with it being how stupid Chrysalis and her plan are. I'm glad people are gearing up to enjoy the movie. But I'll wait for a real MLP:FIM movie.

That's a good observation, and it seems to be a trend in the MLP-verse.

 

Though I'm not as convinced that it's a marketing technique, as much as it's the difference between DHX's and Hasbro's way of marketing.

 

It seems the second trailer was more designed to get people from the brony audience interested, but the first trailer was intended for the target audience. When A Canterlot Wedding was first advertised, images of Cadence, a "pretty pink pony princess" were the first things leaked and Hasbro advertised the girliest aspects of it. However, when the release came closer the Hub released a trailer with a bunch of clones battling it out with a machine-gun Twilight.

 

Now there's no way to be sure of this, but it seems that Hasbro prefers to advertise things the way they've always known how to advertise (their traditional views on childrens programming), and DHX and The Hub have a more brony-centric, or better said all ages, advertising agenda in mind.

 

In any case, both the leaked images and the new trailer have given me a lot more hope for the film (as well as confirmation that Spike can talk). What would really sell it for me though, is If they throw in a reference or two to Buffy The Vampire Slayer. I mean the plotline so far seems to sort of have that vibe.
