Who is Derpy really?

Hello there everypony, my apologies if this type of thread has already been posted or if its in the wrong forum section. Im still kind of new to this but, anyway Iv been wandering if anypony knows anything about Derpy's background. I mean for being one of the most favored pegasus in Equestria, I feel like very little is known about her. Iv seen her in a couple of episodes but, Iv never really seen her talk to anypony in them, she just seems to be a silly background pony. Does she have a family or group of close friends that she hangs out with? How did she get her cutie mark and what does it represent? I also assume that Derpy isn't her real name (obviously) but, that everypony just calls her that because they ether don't know her real name or because she just acts really silly all of the time. She is a character that has really caught my interest because a lot of ponies like her but, don't seem to know a lot about her. Im just curious to know if anypony here knows more about her.

Now seriously, I thought her name was Derpy Hooves/ Ditzy Doo, I don´t know, that´s what I heard. And though she has a huge fanbase in this fanbase she is still a side-character, so all info about her is ficition/ fantasy xD.

I don't think anyone here knows too much about Derpy besides what's already been proven, but it would be pretty nice if someone developed her personality to be more like a three dimensional character. For example, she could be the type who sees the good in other ponies, being charmingly naive (not stupid, there's a difference) but ends up having her trust and happy-go-lucky nature being taken advantage of and stomped on simply because she's different. That would make for a great fanfiction, and offer some development to her current canon personality.

literally she's just a background pony that got botched in an episode and since has been a fan made hit. I think her real name was meant to be bubbles... hence the cutey mark.

 

unofficially she's Doctor Whooves companion and will pop around randomly it seems.

 

In the comics she has a more official position as the mail pony of local station (union?) 1701 (hint hint!!) but then again that may have also been another fan thing..

Derpy Hooves is a famous background pony who apparently has "derpy" eyes. That's how her name came to be. (by fans of course)
Though, her eyes are nothing more than a mistake, she was like the Waldo of MLP. Everyone loves her, including me. But in a certain episode where Derpy finally gets to make an appearance, some people didn't take a liking to Derpy, calling her offensive to the mentally challenged. They were going to take her off permanently, but made an acception so instead changed her eyes, name, and her voice. Her name is changed to Ditzy Doo, but among the fans she is still known as Derpy Hooves. But we don't care either way, as long as she is on the show. It's more offensive to take her off for being offensive, I think she sets an excellent example.

Derpy got a popular following after she was spotted in the first episode of the show. Her eyes were crossed, which was really an animation error. After that, she became pretty popular in the fandom, and randomly appeared in many following episodes as kind of a "Where's Waldo?" thing.

 

In the episode "The Last Roundup", Derpy spoke for the first time, and it was a big deal for many bronies out there. (Not me, personally, I didn't get it.) But Hasbro got in trouble because parents thought Derpy was mentally challenged, which she isn't, she's just clumsy. Her voice then got changed in all future airings of the episode, and her eyes were no longer derped. That whole thing was a big deal back then. However, she still appears in later episodes, just she's in the background again with derped eyes, and not speaking.

 

If you heard anything about her and muffins, it comes from this scene from "Applebuck Season:"

Derpy wasn't actually the one to say "Muffins!" in that scene, but most people thought it was her, so that became a thing as well.

 

 

I still don't know anything about her Cutie Mark being bubbles. Never was explained yet. Any relation to Doctor Whooves, I don't understand either.

 

About her personal life, I think it would be pretty nice to see who she actually is, and what she does.

When she was younger, she was friends with another pony named Trixie. They were playing one day, and Trixie cast a wayward spell that hit Derpy in the eyes by accident.

 

Trixie never forgave herself, and ran away. She ended up becoming a boastful pony to offset the self-blame.

 

Season 4 spoiler: Trixie will finally reveal to everyone what happened, and reconcile with Derpy. But, when she offers to fix Derpy's eyes though a super spell brought on by re-discovering friendship, Derpy will turn her offer down, saying that she never minded them, and that they're now part of who she is. Common tropes regarding fan characterizations include:

 

• Loves muffins. This one is often regarded as one of the few truly-true aspect of her personality that everyone agrees on).
• Clumsy, but bright.
• Ponyville's Mail-mare. Also pretty universal, kinda sorta confirmed by the official comic book.
• Related to Dinky, that purple-y unicorn filly, usually depicted as the mother. This is based solely on the fact that they have similar color schemes though not really. They're never seen together at all. In fact, we constantly see her with Golden Harvest instead. Speaking of which...
• Friends with Golden Harvest.
• One of the cooler tropes involves her being associated with Time Turner, who is pretty much always depicted as the ponified version of Doctor Who. Time traveling hi-jinks and shipping ensue.

But in all seriousness, Derpy was actually an animation error in the first episode.  One of the animators left her eyes pointing in different dirrections.  She appears in a few other episodes with her eyes correctly oriented, so that's evidence that is was a mistake.  Bronies saw the animation error and nicknamed the pony "Derpy".  The production team just decided to roll with it.

She is called both in the show Mainly ditsy, but derpy in the s2e14 before it got changed.

 

She originated from a animation glitch in the first episode that people on 4chan saw and named her .

one would think as much given the evidence, but iirc either someone directly involved with the show or lauren faust came out and stated it was an error.

But much like many things in the show, the fans love for it got the production team going and keeping it in.

Sad that hasblow hasn't followed suit and produced better products for the fans. Namely things for the older ones to sink their teeth into the obvious cash cow they're ignoring.

But much like harmony crap... i mean gold, i guess they'd rather kill their IP's as opposed to help them grow.

Well, I really don't want to admit it, but I think she's just a pony for entertainment. (( No hate please! )) I mean, I love Ditzy Doo, but have you noticed when she talked in the Last Roundup, she was just like, "Are you OK Rainbow Daaash?" She acted all clumsy. If she was a serious pony, she wouldn't appear as much, and the show might not have a fan favorite pony. That's probably what Hasbro thought. I think that's why she has no backstory.

yes and no.. she is/was just a background pony, NONE of them have any real identity outside what the fans have made for them.

Just look at Vinyl Scratch and Octavia. neither ones appeared very often and yet they're huge hits with the fans.

They've even been given semi-background stories of their own.Vinyl has even gotten something derpy doesn't even have, and official combable hair figure. Sure Derpy got the vinyl doll, but thats not on hasbro's end, someone else made that.

Derpy has appeared a multitude of times due to her fan base, and is always up to something silly, be it dropping truck loads on Twilights head, or wearing a paper bag costume on nightmare night.

 

They're all there just for entertainment, but Derpy has become a, as many put it, wheres waldo of ponyville.
