Sunny sighed.

"Sorry," she repeated. "I... I just don't know if i'm ready, but I'm afraid of upsetting you or you thinking I don't care about you or love you as much as I actually do, or something, if I say no." she sighed again, closing her eyes and burying her face in Candy's mane before she could see Candy's reaction and before Candy could see the tear that sprang to her eyes.

Candy sighed in relief, more so for knowing what the problem is than anything else, "You're my Sunshine. You're my one and only. Turning down the idea of sex, no matter how anxious I am, won't be enough to deter me from loving you." She chuckled, and kissed the mare on top of the head. "Y'know, I'm glad I have anypony I can say I'm in love with, and now that I have you, I wouldn't have anypony else. It's a thrill for me to just wake up next to you every morning. I don't wanna ruin this with my urges." She hugged the mare tightly, with one leg, "I think we'll be okay, do you?"

Sunny moved her head back and looked at Candy, a small but relieved smile on her face. She nuzzled Candy back.
"Yeah," she half said, half mumbled. She'd basically just been on an emotional roller coaster, and it had left her surprisingly tired. Candy's warmth didn't wake her up any.
"I love you, Candy," she murmured contentedly, cuddling up to her.

Candy smiled in the same content fashion that her significant other had. "I love you too...Sunny." She started getting up, and used both her own strength, and that of her magic to lift the other mare, and carry her to bed. She laid her down carefully, and covered her in the sheets. By now, the other mare had fallen asleep, but Candy still decided to speak quietly to her. "You really are the most beautiful thing for everypony in the world of Equestria to lay eyes on...and you're all mine, my love." She whispered the sentence happily to the other mare, as she joined her in bed, and whispered, "Goodnight, Sunshine." Soon, Candy joined Sunny in slumber, and was off in a realm of dreams.

Rut-Light and Steam-Iron were currently sitting inside on of the few bars in Baltimare and were honestly having a good time.  "See?  I told you I wouldn't forget about that beer I owed you."  Steam Iron was not one to get intoxicated at all but once in a while he felt the need to, especially after a day like this one.  Rut-Light didn't like the idea of getting drunk at all so he was only going to have one or two, "Hey, I never said you forgot, I just wanted you to keep your side of the bargain."  The bartender came up from behind the counter and said in a rough tone, "Hey, sorry to intrude in conversation, but the bar's about to close for the night."  Rut-Light glanced at the bartender and asked, "Since when do bars close at 9.pm?"  The man behind the counter simply replied that he is not in-charge of that and asked them to pay,  and so they payed and left on towards home.

Now that night had fallen, Caramel urged Ember to accept her buying a room at a hotel for the night. She knew she lacked enough bits for too many of these but it was common courtesy. She wanted her new found friend to have a bed to sleep in after all he had been through.

It wasn't the best place, and very unusual for Caramel...being she'd never been to a hotel before. Nodding kindly with a smile, she opened the door and trotted inside. "Make yerself at home Ember, " she said courteously. "I know you city folk sometimes like to stay up till the rooster crows but I've got to hit the hay. Sweet dreams to ya and don't let the bed bugs bite ya!" Caramel trotted off to her room and shut the door. Slowly, she crept into the bed...the very plush bed. As she laid there, she looked out the window, complacent she had made a friend in this huge town. She already missed home as her stomach growled. The song she sang out in the street played in her head again and rocked the tired pony, like a filly, to sleep.

Ember had tried to argue about letting her buy him a room, without success.  He didn't like the idea of taking charity, especially from a new friend.  He sighed as she went to her own room, turning to drop his saddlebags on the bed and look through his meager supplies.  Today went from bad to good to bad to good...  I sure hope Bubble won't mind me having to put off that fireworks display I promised.  Maybe tomorrow night, after I can re-stock.  A pony's only as good as his word, and I promised a show!

 

The stallion glanced towards the door again as he climbed into the bed, not bothering to move his bags.  And Caramel...  She's so nice, I've gotta find a way to repay her too...  Hmmm...  Gears started to turn in Ember's head as he tried to come up with a plan, his stump of a horn glowing as he searched his bags for paper and something to write with.  He fell asleep with a half-drawn plan on the paper, a smile on his face while he clutched the drawing with a hoof.

Within a few moments, the waiter returned with their order.

"Thank You!"

As the waiter began to pass out the meals, Skycoaster began to dig through his saddlebag looking for a few bits to give the waiter for a tip. He struggled to find enough, but did.

"Thank you again sir."

 

Sky began looking around the table, hoping that nopony realized that he was broke. Dinner was on his expense account at work, so was the room. Work was paying for everything, but he hoped that they wouldn't notice.

Since the unpronounceable dish which Bubble had ordered turned out to simply be some kind of salad, she tucked in. On one hoof, the food was presented really nicely: on the other hoof, it was still just a salad. She wasn't one to complain though - beaming gratefully over the free meal in the fancy hotel with her new friends.

 

"What's wrong Sky? Is there something wrong with you're food? Is it too hot? Or cold?" She asked, noticing the faintest trace of what looked like worry on his face. "Oh! You're not allergic to hay are you?" She ventured.

"Nothing wrong," He slightly chuckled. "They forgot my ketchup." as he put on a fake smile than frowned.

 

"Can I tell you guys a secret?" He looked around the table. "I'm kind of.....broke.....My hotel and all the food I order are on an expense account that the weather factory has given me. My bonus depends on IF I can get Baltimare's weather fixed. I was actualy debating about taking the weather team captain myself.....I hate my desk job at the factory."

 

He looked around again. "Just don't say anything to the hotel staff. They think I'm using my money, not the weather factory's."

Bubble flicked an ear and tapped her chin with a hoof thoughtfully, considering what Sky had said: wondering whether there was a solution that she could think if. Suddenly a brilliant idea emerged - one that would easily solve his problem!

 

"Oh! I know! I know!" She almost jumped out of her seat. "You could ask a waiter for some ketchup and put it on the food yourself!" She said in a perfectly serious, if excitable, tone.

 

It was the perfect solution!

Thunder Dash said thanks to the waiter then started to eat his burger. He then gathered some electricity and made a ketchup bottle appear from the blue. "There, that should fix it." Thunder Dash said as he started to pour ketchup in his little cup and then on his hamburger meat. "Here you go Sky." Thunder Dash said handing the ketchup bottle to sky.

As the berries from earlier had filled him up, Pondah worked through his sandwich at a more traditional rate, not his usual 'shove it down as fast as you can before you drop dead' rate. As Skycoaster whispered his secret, Pondah gave a straight face. "Your secret's safe with me," ​Pondah said reassuringly. "If there's one thing the being a hermit has taught me, it's how to not converse with ponies for extreme lengths of time. If money's a problem, I can lend a hand. I've only spent one bit in the past five months!"

 

​Pondah's eyes were drawn to Thunder's electrickery and the creation of the mystical life-blood known as ketchup. As he followed the blobs of sauce, he smirked slightly. "So you're an omnivorous pony, huh?" ​Pondah asked. "I never thought I'd meet one."

Sunny Caramel woke up a few hours later, her mind troubling her. She thought about home, her pa and ma, and her brothers who had left to begin their own lives without a word of where they were going. She knew she was alone. For one of the first times her life, Caramel didn't smile. Walking quietly, she sat in the bright moon beams that shown through the window as she looked outside. It was unfortunate that her songs were sad ever since she arrived in Baltimare but perhaps it was a reflection of herself. She sighed wistfully before she softly serenaded the night. 

"Night stars are shining,

in that dark hallowed sky,

in a place where dreams have no end.

Sun always rises,

and reveals the truth of the world,

and the stars they no more will tend.

There must be some purpose,

to the make it all have worth,

and give me reason to believe.

Grant me a memory,

oh a relief that will save me,

and bring me peace tonight.

 

May the stars always gleam,

in my life and my heart,

Again tears came from her kind blue eyes as she whimpered softly...the moonlight glistening in them as they fell.

Ember woke up in about the same position he'd fallen asleep in, his ears twitching.  Wha...  What's that sound?  It took him a moment, but his half-awake brain finally managed to recognize the 'sound' as singing coming from his open window.  That...  That sounds like Caramel...

 

Leaving his things where they lay, he moved to the window to listen for a while.  She sounds...  So sad...  After he listened to her song, it took him a moment to come to a decision before leaving his room.  A soft green glow surrounded his stump of a horn when he stepped into the dark hallway, taking a moment to figure out which room was hers.  He walked quietly down to Caramel's door, raising a hoof to knock but then lowering it.  He didn't want to wake her if she'd gone back to sleep.

 

With a quiet voice he leans in to her door so that she would hear him, but to hopefully not disturb any of the other rooms.  "Uh...  Caramel?  Are you awake?  It's Ember."

Caramel didn't mean to wake Ember. She thought she had been quiet enough with her song...but she guessed it got a little more louder towards the end...Hurriedly, she wiped her eyes and put on a smile. "Yeah, I'm awake. Couldn't sleep a wink. You can come in if ya want. Just admirin the view of the city heheh."

Smiling a little he opened her door, taking a moment to rub one of his hooves across his eyes.  He hadn't gotten much sleep these past couple days, but he wanted to make sure she was okay before going back to bed.  Trying not to yawn he moved to sit down next to the mare, looking out the window.  "Quite a view, huh?"  He turned to look at her again.  "Uhm..."  Oh buck it Ember, just say something!  "I uh, heard you singing...  You have a really pretty voice."

Caramel lowered her head, knowing she had been caught. "I'm sorry I woke ya up. I know ya haven't been gettin much sleep," she apologized. Wistfully, she gazed out at the city. It lights sparkling in the night. "It's really somethin alright...Never seen anything like it."

Ember shook his head with a small smile.  "Don't worry about me, I'm fine."  Fighting back a yawn that would contradict what he just said, he turns his gaze back to the window as she mentions the city, sitting quietly for a moment.  After a short time his face becomes lit up by a soft green glow from his broken horn and he speaks quietly, still staring out the window.  "It can be really intimidating, can't it?  Leaving home for the first time?  I remember when I first left the rock farm, I had no idea what I was supposed to do out in the world by myself.  If a day went by when I couldn't make a sale, I'd panic and think about running home to my family, where I knew I'd be alright...  But I kept telling myself, just one more day!  Tomorrow could be the day I make it, if I run home now I won't know!"  

 

A few sparks fly from the stump of his horn and he shakes his head, letting the spell die off.  "Having friends to talk to helps.  It's tough, but nopony should have to carry everything by themselves."  He turns to look at Caramel again, his characteristic goofy smile back on his face.  "I mean, that's what friends are for, right?"

Ember was a very kind pony. Caramel looked back at him, happy that he was there. She spoke softly, "I...I know. I always figured there was somepony worse off. Being homesick's normal...but I worry." It was becoming difficult for her to hold back her tears as one trickled down her cheek, "I have to make sure my ma and pa are taken care of. I have to earn bits so the bank don't take mah home."

It was midnight in the Everfree forest. Or somewhere around midnight, it's hard to guess what time it was when all your eyes can see were dead trees looming over your tender flesh, branches clawing weakly at your direction. The air was unusually cold even for Everfree forest, the sound of southern wing rustling the leaves was pretty much near deafening.

 

Starshine quickened his pace on the dirt path that lead to Ponyville. It was dark, but nothing he couldn't manage through. With a simple light enchantment he had fashioned himself a makeshift torch. His monthly business with the zebra was done and thorough, his supplies of forest flowers had replenished, now he was ready for another journey around Equestria. He left much of his bits back with the zebra, though. There was only enough bits for a train ticket to Baltimare in his saddlebag.

 

The Ponyville was eerily silent the time Starshine reached the train station. Other than some drunkards wobbling around, there wasn't anything worthy of notice. With a sigh Starshine slumped on one of the benches. The Baltimare train shouldn't be here for another four hours. Drowsily his eyes fluttered close, eager for the much deserved rest. Maybe a quick nap wouldn't be so bad...

Ember smiled and reached to place a hoof reassuringly on her shoulder.  "Bits'll come.  Trust me, I've been there, when you're not making anything it feels like you never will...  But I've got a plan!  It should help both of us out if everything works out like I think it will."  The young stallion started to sway a little from fatigue but he made himself sit there a little bit longer.  "It's late, we should both get some sleep...  And put your worries to rest!  I'll tell ya more in the morning, but I think right now we should sleep.  We're gonna have a long day tomorrow."  He winked at her, hoping he was able to at least help her sleep a little better tonight.

 

Okay Ember, now your plan HAS to work!  You went and opened your mouth about it, you're going to have to get to work first thing.

Caramel laughed as she noticed how tired Ember was in his voice. She smiled and looked at him, curiously as she wondered what plans he had in store. Her eyes were still shiny as she held back her tears. "I think that'd be best," she nodded before patting Ember's back surprisingly strong for a mare, "Careful ya don't fall asleep on your way back to your room!" Caramel hugged Ember thankfully for his encouraging words before she made her way to her bed. "Be sure to turn the lights off on your way out please, Ember," she asked him, yawning as she layed down on the mattress.

Skycoaster nodded at Pondah's comment.

"Hehe, um thanks. I'm just living from payday to payday." Skycoaster said in a way to make sure that the hotel staff was not tipped off.

 

"Now you guys know the real reason I volunteer for these work paid trips." He laughed.

 

After everypony had finished, Sky looked out the window and noticed it was getting late.

 

"If everypony would excuse me, I've got a long day of drilling tomorrow. Weather team meets in the park at 5 a.m." he said with a slight chuckle as he got up. "If anypony needs a place to crash tonight, my room has a nice couch and a spare bedroom."

Looking outside with a crestfallen expression, Bubble realised that they had been far too long - she would have missed her chance to find Ember and see the fireworks.

 

"I should be getting back to my own hotel - it's late." She said with a yawn as she stood up, one of the flowers falling from her mane as is to emphasise her point. "Thank you for the meal Sky! I'll see you later, okay?"
