gaming Game Discussion: Is Rockstar one of the best game companies ever?

Yesterday, I picked up L.A. Noire from my local Gamestop. And I have to say... I like it. It's not like your typical Rockstar game. Instead of going around the city with an assault rifle and wreaking havoc, I had to focus on good, clean detective work. It was nice to see Rockstar step out of their ordinary game formula and try something a little different. While I was playing, a thought came into my head; Rockstar has been making a lot of good games recently. Whether it be about a European, a cowboy, or a detective, Rockstar always seems to manage to please the gaming community.

So, tell me. From what you've seen come out of Rockstar, do you think they're one of the greatest game companies ever, or not quite? And why?

Not really impressed by them, honestly. The only game of their's that I had any interest in recently is LA Noire. What I can say is that they do have a good brand name going on: it's to the point where they can sell games just by naming them "Grand Theft Auto". They're successful, but for me personally they are just 'meh'.

They are pretty good, they have their gems like GTA; San Andreas, Red Dead Redemption and Max Payne, but they're not THE best. THE best would be Valve or Digital Illusions CE.

I do have to agree with you. In my opinion, the best companies will always be Nintendo and Valve. Rockstar is great, but they're not the best. But they're ONE of the best.

Well, I wouldn't say that Rockstar is one of the best gaming companies since there are other companies that can interest you in gaming trailers and convince you to buy their games. They hit home runs with LA Noire, Grand Theft Auto, and other big titles. But, like every other gaming company they try to earn their way to be their best. So, there's my opinion.

They have made several critically acclaimed games like Grand theft auto and red dead redemption.

 

But as the all time best? Of course people will debate on who's better. 

 

But if you ask me, I'd say one of the top 3 best game companies.

I don't really like Gran Theft Auto or Rockstar games, I'd even say that I don't like recent games, except Portal 2.

The best brand, for me, is "The Pokemon Company". (It's not Nintendo who make these games actually lol.)
They made my second favorite game of all time, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Blue Rescue Team.
 

But sadly, their main games and other spinoffs aren't really great, they are even terrible sometimes. Not enough work on the Storyline and gameplay, it's like if they rush to do the game and fill it with useless things instead of more quests and side-quests. They made two awesome games, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team and Explorer, but Gate to Infinity.. is a terrible mess, probably the biggest disappointment in my life about video games.

 

What I like the most in video games, is the storyline, and what I don't care about is the graphics.
It seems the game developpers these days put too much effort on the gameplay, but mostly graphics, and forget the storyline, giving it no importance at all.

And games can even be terribly great even without graphics.

I think they've made some pretty cool games, are they the best company? Eh i don't think so, maybe one of the better ones, but not sure if their the best.

 

What is the best to me? Frankly idk. I think that alot of the big time gaming companies all have their good points and bad, so all the top contenders are alot of opinion as to what types of games you like, or how you think companies should do this stuff like that, they make their games different, not necessarily one over the other.

 

Of course there are some more predominant companies who are the better companies, I think rockstar can find its place there for some of the things they've made, atleast from what i can tell.

I've enjoyed a lot of Rockstar games, mostly from the GTA series.

 

HOWEVER.

 

They REALLY suck at porting games to PC. My computer isn't top-of-the-line, but it's good enough to run most modern games on high settings. Yet it STILL lags when I try to play GTA IV. A game that came out FIVE YEARS AGO. On the LOWEST SETTINGS POSSIBLE. I can barely even play L.A. Noire because of how much it lags! 

 

It really bugs me when developers spend virtually NO time trying to polish up PC ports. Games used to be optimized for computers first, THEN for consoles....

 

tl;dr I like their games but they suck at porting so I can barely play some of their newer games.

 

Oh, and needing a Microsoft Live account to play a game that's on Steam is ridiculous.

I never liked any of their games until Red Dead Redemption and I hear LA Noire is pretty good so nope, can't agree with that.

 

Media.Vision, Sonic Team, Square Enix, Namco Bandai, Nintendo....all much better but you know, opinions and all.

Companies like Valve, id software and Nintendo deserve that top spot (Valve is best IMO, but that's mainly because I'm a massive Valve fanboy.)

 

I also hate their attitude towards PC gaming. Their games are unoptimized as hell, they release them months after the console release, and in the case of Red Dead Redemption, they don't release to PC at all! Why? I can't tell you how dissapointed I was not to be able to get that game.

 

So basically, Rockstar are good at what they do, but to me they will always be assholes, plain and simple. Not EA level assholes, but still assholes. That's another reason I love Valve, they are amazingly supportive of the gaming community and modding community for such a large company.

Rockstar isn't the best, but I'd say they would definitely be in the top 5 gaming companies out there. They've created many, many great games. The most famous would be the Grand Theft Auto series, L.A Noire, Red Dead Redemption and Max Payne 3. All are fantastic games that deserve a lot of attention... A LOT.

 

But I wouldn't say they are #1

I only really kind of like the Grand Theft Auto series. And even that's just kind of meh, in my opinion. Pretty much everything else they've made hasn't interested me. 

 

And as a person who plays games mostly on PC, I do not like the fact that I have to jump through hoops and sign up for all of these accounts to play a game I paid for.

Valve IS pretty good. I don't use Steam much since I'm a console gamer (Heck, my Steam nameis The DIrty Console Peasant) But whenever I want to play something on PC, Steam is where I go.

I liked GTA IV and had some interest in Red Dead Redemption, but to me the best would be either Valve or 2K (owned by the same people as Rockstar, Take Two Interactive)

I'd agree that they are one of the best. I mean, they ALWAYS please their fans (except PC gamers...) with one hit after another. I was never a Rockstar fan up until like 2 years ago, and the amount of effort and attention they put into their games just blew me away. 
I've played GTA4, LA Noire and Red Dead, and they're easily some of the best free roam action games I've played. GTA5 also looks like it'll be mindblowing.

I wouldn't say they're the best (for me, that title belongs to Nintendo's studios, or Kojima Productions), but Rockstar come pretty close.
