How many people like Applejack?

I do like Applejack. She's the mature and levelheaded of the group, and I've enjoy a lot of her episodes. She's just not my favorite.

 

I feel like the writers could use her better, though. I think this video by BronyCurious does a good job explaining why AJ isn't as popular as some of the other ponies.

If she took up a new character trait or quirk, such as being overly ambitious, too difficult to humour or something, then suddenly the statements that she's 'the most visibile background character' would vanish, because then she would have a new dimension to explore, and another trait to compare conflict with other character traits of the other mane characters.

I sort of agree with this. AJ is a great character, they just need to do more with her. I've got a few ideas:

 

1. The border of the Everfree Forest is encroaching on Sweet Apple Acres. Celestia wants AJ to move the farm, but she refuses. We see the extent of AJ's stubbornness and learn more about the history of the Everfree--it's been growing around the old castle since the time of Nightmare Moon and even Celestia can't stop it from spreading. This could be a great prelude to the return of Nightmare Moon, i.e. if she's gone why is the forest still growing, but it doesn't look like they're going to go that way. Sigh.

 

2. Applejack is tired of just making ends meet and decides to take some of her business to Canterlot. But she doesn't think the ponies there will pay attention to a regular country mare, so Rarity coaches her into going back to her old self--the more sophisticated pony she tried to be, back when she left home. Naturally the facade has to crack sometime, but we see that AJ is willing to sacrifice a lot, including her pride, for the sake of family. This goes back to the death of her parents.

 

3. And whatever they're planning with Applejack and Pinkie Pie in Season 4 looks excellent.

I don't like Applejack. I love Applejack. She is such a well-rounded character, in that she's not only a great lead character, but she is also an excellent supporting character. She brings out the best traits in the other characters in the show, and she is able to convey messages in a natural, sincere and yet informal way. Some of her best moments are in episodes she's not even the focus of, and for that she is consistently lovable and entertaining.

 

As I said, Applejack is extremely well-rounded, and I think you can find a little bit of the others in her character. AJ is very rational, modest, and has great leadership qualities much like Twilight Sparkle. They both hate letting down their friends, and they always try to do what's right in any given situation. Applejack has a tendency to be motherly, especially when it comes to her little sister. She is kind, understanding, and compassionate, very much like Fluttershy. AJ is very proud, stubborn, and even a bit tomboyish, much like Rainbow Dash. Both ponies have had their fair share of heroics as well. Applejack can even be really silly like Pinkie Pie. Must I remind you that it was Applejack who read a bedtime story to an apple tree? Even Applejack and Rarity, who are polar opposites, are both passionate business ponies who have younger sisters that they cherish. So what I'm getting at, is that Applejack is extremely versatile. She is a total package character, because there's so many layers to her personality and who she is.

 

Sadly, a lot of the criticisms against her are very short-sighted. For instance, I've seen plenty of people say they dislike her simply for being a cowgirl/country pony/farmer, without looking at what else defines her character. She also tends to get labeled as being the boring pony, which baffles me, because has had numerous funny, charming, and downright adorable moments throughout the three seasons. She rounds out the gang by being the level-headed and mature one, but there's so much more to her than that if you look a little deeper.

 

And then there's that tired argument that her character is fully explored, to which I'm just going to leave this video. If you say her character is fully explored, (you know who you are) then you better take six minutes and watch this.

 

 

For me, Applejack is interesting even if she is fully explored. Sure, she doesn't have a clear goal because she's perfectly content with her routine life, but that also makes her a much more realistic character, rather than a fantasy character who will have all of their wildest dreams come true. However, on that note, who is to say she doesn't have further goals, or a specific destiny? Twilight became an alicorn princess which surprised most of the Brony fanbase, because we never thought it was going to happen. Faust once said she had a plan for all of the characters by the series end, so I'm sure AJ was part of the equation somewhere even if her dreams may be less obvious or grand-scale than that of Rarity or Rainbow Dash's dreams. In any case, Applejack fits the bill for a character in a slice-of-life series, and she does her job well.

 

I could write all day about Applejack, and I feel like I'm just scratching the surface on all I'd like to say, but I'll call it a day, because you get the point. Applejack is a great character. I love her to death. Anyone who dislikes her is a poor, miserable, misguided soul. (Not really, but seriously, what's up?)

She's my third favorite pony, but I love my top three favorites to pieces. Applejack is great. Her integrity, work ethic and empathy for others are unmatched. Her dedication to what is important, whether related to work or family/friends is also incredible. I'd go so far as to say that she's the best role model of the Mane Six, if not the show overall.

 

She also happens to be very cute at times, and has some great deadpan moments as well. Her episode with Pinkie Pie is one of the things I'm looking forward to most about Season 4 (granted, one of the only things we know will happen in Season 4, but still )

Lots of people like Applejack; she's the most getalongist pony you'll ever meet! The thing is her character hasn't really progressed much throughout the series. Unlike Rainbow for example she doesn't have any real goals.  Her only goal was to work on the Apple Farm and she's accomplished that. As Blue said ealier she's been fully explored and has taken to being a mentor type character or as a support, thus the best background pony thing. She needs something to do which we will hopefully see in season four.

 

But c'mon everyone likes Applejack. She just might not be their favourite.

Applejack, though she is my least favorite(feel bad for saying that), she is still a very admirable member of the mane 6 to me. Her strong work ethics, and her just as strong morale to be honest and be true to who she is in her very nature makes her one pony that I definitely respect. 

 

I agree that she is also underrated in the show series. I'm just happy that season 3 finally made it up to her by giving her her own song. I love "Raise this Barn!" It has a really catchy tune to it, and it just makes me want to get up and sing whilst doing something extraordinary. 

 

I hope they give her more screen time. Can't to see season 4. It seems that Applejack has another great song awaiting!

 

Also, one final pointer: she is a pretty blonde pony. Is this not adorable?

Don't be, Applejack has been my favorite pony since I first started watching and Derpy has been my favorite background pony for almost as long. I like Derpy for one of the many reasons why I also like Applejack and it is the fact that both characters give the positive message of being true to yourself albeit in different ways. With Derpy it being the message of its okay to be different and with Applejack about being honest with yourself and others and doing the right thing even when it is hard. I have always loved Applejack and I always will, Luna and Twilight may now be tied with her for my favorite pony but Applejack holds a special place as the first pony I really took a liking to.

I'm sure you already know that Applejack is my favorite character, Doopliss OctaviaMelody, but I don't think I've ever explained exactly why I love AJ a lot. So I guess I should do that now, heh.

 

One big reason why I love Applejack so much is because she's so dedicated to helping others, whether it be her family, her friends, or even the entire town of Ponyville. In Applebuck Season, she overworks herself on the farm, but she also helps Rainbow Dash, Pinkie, and Fluttershy - although all attempts to help her friends end in nearly disastrous results. Still, Applejack puts her need for rest aside and is willing to help. In The Last Roundup, Applejack loses the rodeo and is thus unable to win the money needed to fix the town hall - but does that stop her? Heck no! Applejack takes a job to send the money she promised. Apple Family Reunion is another good example, as AJ becomes very eager to put on the perfect family reunion for the Apple Family.

 

My second reason is that Applejack has many good and admirable traits. She's honest, hard-working, dependable, loyal, helpful, kind, humble, strong... and so much more. She's very level-headed and doesn't panic in a crisis, choosing to simply solve her problems. If there's one FiM character whom I can respect, it's Applejack. No question. 

 

Also, I would like to mention that I find AJ's stubbornness to be a great flaw for her character. It shows that Applejack isn't perfect and can be independent to a fault. I feel that I can relate to AJ here, as I can be quite stubborn myself sometimes.

Well I don't like Apple jack nope.... I LOVE HER , she reminds me of my wife. country girl! top of all that I love country girls! Now that's not the only reason I love her so much! Its because she's strong, loving and wants to do the best she can for every pony and well do anything for any pony.

A lot of people have gave a lot of good explanation on why AJ is a great pony. I can explain, but is hard for me. Really I admit I'm disappointed how she was is in the Last Round-Up, really due to the fact that it wasn't kn her perspective. But I can't say it was her characterization. Really even with little screen time she can be a great character if understood. Really you have to put yourself into a character. Maybe things would be better if people actually did that. That don't mean AJ has to be their favorite, just give her more respect.

Tell me about it, people still go on and on about that 20% cooler crap as if it's a freaking catch phrase. Dahs only said it once, and you people drove it into the ground. Sadly though, AJ being a background pony was reinforced when Derpy took center stage in her episode. I feel so sorry for her fans.

Actually she's said it a couple times, if not more.

I can recall at least twice overall, and I'm not very learned in pony history.

She also used the line a few times in some mock "interview" things that they had at one time. I recall Hot Topic posted a few of them too and it even had RD mention that the line was her catch phrase of sort.

 

As to Derpy taking stage, that small scene was meant just to be a quick nod to the fans, but instead got turned into a sh*&storm by whiney parents that feel a need to hide the mentally handicapped and find fault in anything that even remotely resembles it.

That and of course the rabid Derpy fans. I don't think it really altered the whole of the episode however, it did become known as the episode derpy spoke in, but again, mostly due to bad parenting.

I do like AJ. I really enjoy her personality, and she is kind of adorable. Though, she is my 3rd favorite (Rainbow Dash being 1 and Twilight Sparkle being 2) I feel as if she is getting to 1st knocking RD to 3rd. I can't really make my mind up with the main six. Honestly, I think AJ, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash and Twilight Sparkle is number one while the rest is number 2. I can't make up my mind. I've grown a crush on AJ, as well. lol

Honestly I'm not entirely sure myself but heck I love Applejack. Her flaws and personality always make me smile and laugh but then again some characters like Pinkie Pie are loved by all on the internet due to her fourth wall breaking, Rainbow Dash serving as like a mascot in a sense for a twist of conventions of how people view women and males

 

Still, Applejack has her fans definitely :3

She's not my favorite, but I do like her a lot and appreciate what she brings to the show. Here's why:

 

1) she works well with other characters. Her being the polar opposite of Rarity in many ways makes for a perfect Odd Couple pairing, and she's great as a straight mare to Chancellor Puddinghead, and I liked seeing her supercompetitive nature with Rainbow Dash.

 

2) I like the fact that she's the most mature of the Mane Six and really has lived the fullest life. Losing her parents when she was young and having to take care of the family, living in Manehattan, etc. that adds a lot of richness to the character.

 

3) she's just so doggone likable. She's sincere and full of integrity, is very friendly but not overbearingly so, and is probably someone I'd enjoy hanging out with if I met her IRL.

Well, she's my least favorite Mane 6, but I still like her. She's a really cool character, and I envy her honesty more than any other element. I just think her only main flaw was addressed in Applebuck Season and SSCS6000, making her the only character not to have a real flaw. And I kinda get bored with a character when they have no flaws. She just seems a bit too perfect, you know? I still love her though. I couldn't possibly hate a character.
