MLP and Vegetarianism

And the pigs have been canonically shown to be used in show contests, and to dispose of rotten apples on the Apple family farm ("Sisterhooves Social"). Presumably and according to Word of Faust, they can also find truffles for the ponies. Again, there is no firm evidence that ponies eat them, alleged meat-sandwich notwithstanding.

So pets, disposal, food finders, and fertilizer...

TBH I'm curious why Winona is the only animal on the farm that doesn't get to be a speaker...

"Obviously has meat"? You're making an assumption based on the appearance of it. Please prove it's actually meat. And please don't attempt to shift the burden of proof. You made the claim that it's meat specifically, prove it. By prove, I mean, someone actually saying it's ham or some other meat product. Otherwise we can't be sure what it is.

I may sound a bit harsh here, for which I apologize in advance, but I hope you will permit me to play devil's advocate a bit. ;)

Haha just kidding.  Well, I cannot prove its meat but it certainly does look like it! (at least to me)  Look at the curvature of the meat around the bread.  (A property that only thinly sliced things exhibit!)   If It was eggplant or something (which is definitely not that color) I would assume that it would be more firm.

Horses aren't necessarily pure herbivores.  (Although they are for the most part)

I have seem them defined as semi-omnivorous, leaning mostly towards eating plant-life of course.

Semantics. We do have something called vegetarian hamburgers in real life. It's not such a stretch. Pinkie's reference to hotdogs could also be vegetarian.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary:

"Bur·ger - noun - \ˈbər-gər\ - a sandwich similar to a hamburger <tofu burgers> —often used in combination."

You are confusing your terms. Yes, a hamburger certainly has meat in it, but only because it's a hamburger. A burger is the neutral recipe - a bread bun and a patty made of whatever you want. Naturally, a veggie burger has a patty made of veggies.

Hamburgers and veggie burgers are types of burgers, and burgers are a type of sandwich.

Sorry for the misconception folks, I was not actually being serious. I just didn't have anything to argue/rage about so I made something silly to argue about.

I guess next time I try joking around on the internet I'll have to sprinkle in some more smiley's or something...

Smileys are good. :D My RL friends don't often go on forums and thus rarely use smileys...They really scare me when they type.

Glad to hear it anyhow, I was starting to lose faith in humans again!

I always thought the scene with Fluttershy and the chickens was more like Fluttershy sees herself as the chickens' mother and believes she knows what's best for them. It reminded me of a mother trying to get her children to go to bed as it was past their bed time.  I don't think there was any coercion involved, at least no more than in a parent/child relationship. Besides, the chickens behave like actual chickens and not a being of higher intelligence.

The parts with the herd animal is more difficult to explain within the world, but I think the true reason is it was just meant to be a gag.  The same goes for all the mule jokes. They were just set up as a lame pun using our own human perceptions of a mule. It's kind of a 4th wall breaking instance, just more subtle.

You can always eat cereal with milk. As long it's not heavy on the fiber. That'll work the system and could cause some akward moments.

All I can say is that one, it's a cartoon, a cartoon primarily targeted towards the little girl demographic if you really look at its full intention. So of course I would imagine the writers would fail to make much sense. It's not just this aspect of the series either. You can spot so many more things in the show that just don't seem to make sense if you really looked at it.

Cartoon logic man. :P

That is all...for now.

I see a cartoon, but tbh I do not see this "for girls primarily" deal.. sure it has a mostly female cast, but Cadence and the train aside, most of the show is not very "girly":...

sry, had to get that off my chest, I keep seeing/hearing that its a toon "for girls", but i really don't see it....

I guess you're right if you look at some of its deeper aspects. I really don't care if the show is considered girly or not. I love it either way.

And it's fine.

I was so tired when I posted that. :P But yeah, either way, it has cartoon logic, which is why the vegetarianism, along with other things about the show don't really make sense. :P

The more feminine side of the show is mainly Rarity. Other times is when the group is doing something fancy like dress up for a party, spas, and things in Canterlot like the wedding.

I really don't remember it saying anywhere that they are vegetarians. They are sentient life forms just like us so I really don't see why their diets would have to be strictly vegetarian. Now that I think about it, some of Pinkie Pies deserts and what not probably have gelatin in them, gelatin is ground up animal bones and such by the way. But I digress, it's a kids show, so kids show logic.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lyk_EIXk_k

0:56 Pinkie says that their diets are completely vegetarian.  I'm sure they wouldn't use gelatin in their products, I bake a lot of vegan desserts and have never needed gelatin.  :)

Contradicted by that they use eggs when baking :P

and... worms?

Hard to be completely a veggie eater when eggs are involved...

Then again some think eggs are dairy (ROFLMAO.. yeeeah that makes.. well no it doesn't) and fish isn't meat... (also yeeeahhh) so meh.

Like Sanders said up above there, its a toon, its never going to make sense, and people need to stop trying to have it make any :P

Yeah that's my problem as well, so I'll use smiley's more than I think I need to to make up for that!

Haha and no need to lose faith, I am no great harbinger of human destruction. (Or I am and I just haven't figured it out yet!)

They have the ponies be vegetarian because Lauren Faust wanted the ponies to be more realistic.

Ponies and Horses in real life don't eat meat, their bodies were not made to process and digest meat.

Lauren Faust wanted to keep that realistic, even though this is a show that isn't the slightest bit of realistic. xD

But for the other thing I do not understand that and I don't get it either. Maybe those farm animals could talk but they might not be all that smart either, just because you can talk and communicate wouldn't mean that you are all smart, I dunno.

Really that is a touchy subject and most kids would not understand that type of thing, so it doesn't really matter, it's just a kids show and kids would view the farm animals as farm animals even though they talk. That's maybe why they did that.

May wanna go back and read a few other posts.

Horses, and ponies, like many an animal, WILL devour meat if given the chance.

They may not be built for it naturally, but they are fully willing and capable of doing so. Give them a taste of blood and some will even get a little antsy just for it... kinda creepy, but most animals are like that.

to the rest, Agreed :P

Animals are like that, they like to go on instinct. And most animals only think about mating and food.

Lots of animals don't know when to stop eating, like dogs, they tend to want to eat eat eat.

He looks like he needs to fatten up, but he won't eat! :P

  • 3 weeks later...

Only thing that really bothered me was when 'Fluttershy' said veggie burger in EG.  A burger comes from the ingredient hamburger, a type of meat

...Hamburg is a city in Germany. The term 'burger' is derived from the product it is used in (which is a style of sandwich originating in this region), not the other way around.

The vegetarian thing seems to be solely due to the fact that equines are herbivorous. I can understand them having livestock (cows for milk, chickens for eggs, sheep for wool, haven't figured out pigs yet), but the execution in the show is flawed. They had the idea of farming and livestock, and they had the idea of talking animals (both of which are legitimate), and made the mistake of combining them.

Another possibility is that this is a disguised statement on the treatment of livestock. Animals can't talk (in any human language), but they can think and feel. Anthropomorphising  livestock may be a clever way to subliminally suggest to the next generation that animals deserve to not be abused. Even if they are fated to become food, it doesn't justify the current situation.

I agree fully to this concept, but some need to understand that most don't do the things the crazy activists like to claim.

as well as that some of the used methods are actually very much as human as they can get... SOME of them.

One such is the bolt to the brain often used on cattle. When done properly the cow is dead immediately. How is that inhumane to people still?!

Possibly graphic stuff ensues, so spoiler tag used to hide it from those that may not want to read of it.

I don't get the ones around chickens though.. For the record I raise and butcher my own birds for my own use.

I was taught that somehow cutting the throat was the "proper" way over just offing the head... I'd think offing the head would be better....  As they are very much alive and writhing for a few moments to a couple minutes as the blood drains with just cutting the throat.. Eyes all over and vocals gurgled.... pretty nasty IMO.

Another commonly used one is "culling", also referred to as "wringing the neck", but using that term will get you fired and the farm inspected for cruelty and possibly fined... despite the act for either is the same... Breaking the neck. Its just a matter of method. one involved literally wringing the neck while the other has you disconnect the vertebrae by basically pulling on it.

Done wrong either one can leave the chicken ALIVE, and in full motion. And its not hard to do this one wrong. Unlike the bolt in the cow. Missing that is rather hard....

Not pretty seeing a chicken run around with a flopped head.. think Twilight Flopple's horn but as a chicken head.... eeeeeewwwww

In the end i still think a clean head chop sounds most humane...

I've also heard of some odd method of slitting the throat gently at the arteries with a razor blade... but still.. its still alive and brain is on...

And for anyone wondering, yes they do run about without their heads attached for a very short while....

Anywho.. does this count as OT since it pertains in part to the Vegetarianism half....? probably should've considered that first...

Something I've just thought of: if the bologna sandwich we see Applejack reach for and the "hot dogs" Pinkie mentioned during the Runking of the Leaves were some form of grain substitute then why would they be crafted in a form that imitates the image of dead, rotting meat? Especially in a world where you're not judged for vegetarianism.
