Inconsistancy in baby pony eye colors.

While checking out baby pony pics I noticed something off in the 3 episodes we are introduced to baby ponies.

 

So the first time we see a baby pony was in Mysterious Mare-do-well, and they look like this.

Plain black eyes. Since this was the first time one showed up, the different eye design helped to emphasize their youngness.

 

The second time we saw babies was in Baby Cakes, where Pinkie takes care of the Cakes babies.

This time they changed from plain black to distinct eye colors, brown and blue. Since it was the second time they probably wanted to give them the color they would grow up to have instead of raw black, though black is an eye color, so that first one may well have been correct. It helped to give them a little more individuality.

 

Then there comes the backtrack. The diabetus inducing baby Applejack from Apple Family reunion. She looks like this.

 

While she should look like this.

 

Just something that bugged me. Looking at fan drawing of baby ponies where all of them have their main eye color take up their whole eye, Baby Applejack looks weird to me with black eyes instead of green eyes.

I did notice the inconsistency in the foal eye colors but, they probably did this on purpose I don't know for sure. The black eyes do come off to me as a bit creepy.

Well here's a theory. Just to try and justify an animation error.

 

Remember that Pound and Pumpkin Cake were three months old. Maybe the baby in the carriage and baby AJ were younger than that, and their eyes hadn't colored yet. I don't know why that would happen, but hey, it's a whole full of colorful ponies, pegasi and unicorns. Anything can happen.

Either animation error or done on purpose. The series has a lot of Inconsistencies. Like in the early episodes, they referred to their Mane as hair, then later just stuck with mane. The word "hands" were also mentioned in some episodes, but in equestria girls, twilight nor rainbowdash knew what hands were.

    Well, we cant blame the ponies on this one! Besides,there has been a lot of mishaps and inconsistoncies. And to take a wild guess, eye color, eye for, and cutie marks are about 60% or more of inconsistoncies in MLP FIM.

I prefer the Black eyes myself. The coloured one's look really out of place to me and rather creepy as well. But I never even noticed the change in the first place haha.

Well, sir, you're remembering your facts wrong. The episode has pinkie make a point of singing them a 'happy monthaversary' song, and they only say one word at the end of the episode. On the other hand, Applejack was able to say her name and form a complete thought so she'd definitely be a few months older than that.

It's either an error, or it's trying to copy off how the eyes of animals work off. When you're a baby, you are seen with different eye colors than now. That's just my own opinion.

My guess is that hands do exist in Equestria, but they're not common. That's why nobody knows about them (except Lyra). They just say hands because the expression spread all around Equestria.

 

For example, you say "What the heck", but you don't actually know what a heck is, right?

I wouldn't worry about it LOL.  I happen to like the doll eyes the show and the fans put on the kid versions.

If they ever shrank the main cast with a age spell I'd be lookign forward to feeling my teeth melt.

I noticed this when I did a MLP marathon early last month.

 

I, personally, like the coloured eyes better. It makes the foals look a little bit more 'layered' and cute, whereas with the black eyes, they remind me of a creepy doll. But when you look at the Twins, imagining them with black eyes seems like the rest of their colour scheme doesn't exactly go together, but with applejack it's fine with the black, but looks a bit overdone with them coloured.

Plenty of animals have hands with fingers and thumbs, there's also Iron Will & Discord.

 

There's a joke in the Comics where Rainbow Dash can't start a fire because she can't hold the wood.

The baby pony eyes are indeed an interesting feature on baby ponies. I do think I have an idea on how AJ's eye patter.

 

 

 

If we look at an older pick of AJ we can see the center of her eyes are white. The next part are black. Then green and finally white is the outside. So by looking at this, when AJ's get's older and her eyes get bigger, the green well form around the black part and the white well forum around the green. So AJ's eyes are meant to be black, not green. So I don't see this as an animation error.

 

Still it's just an idea.

 

As for Pound and Pumpkin, I can't really explain that one. Most likely the writers aren't going to age the twins, so they wanted to just give them a cute eye color besides black. Another problem is, we have only seen 4 baby ponies in total. We need to see more or some age.

I think there's a good reason behind black eye colors. Those baby ponies with black eye colors only appeared for a very short time in their respective episodes. The baby cakes were different in that they were the promary focus in the episode where they first appeared, so the animators likely figured that it would be more important for them to have more distinct eye colors, brown and blue.

 

A second possibility is that AJ's eye color changed as she grew up. That can happen in real life. My sister was born with blue eyes but they turned brown as she grew up.

I see, another animation error.... 

Oh, I know. Maybe as they grow up they start to lose the colour in their eyes and they go black then after a few years they turn into fully grown eyes. I know it sounds weird but its my theory. xD

Eye color is dependent on two factors.  The pigments you are born with, of course, and the level of light the pigment receives.  Changing eye color is not uncommon in babies or even adults.

Aha, I guess you're right! I haven't watched either Baby Cakes or Apple Family Reunion (Those are the right episodes, right??) in forever! So, yeah, I'm clueless as to why their eyes are different. I guess it's an aspect that was overlooked by the animators.
