Ideas for Villains?

Many people say that they wanted a villain in season 4. I agree but what ideas for villains do you guys have?

A Villan that is smart about what he is doing

He or She could be cunning and colculative so that a plan that might stop them actually ends up backfiring.

Later is defeated when becomes too overconfident and starts getting a bit sloppy.

Perhaps a dumb villain would be interesting, ala Smooze from G1. Another possibility would be a cultured, refined villain that talks in a British accent. My favorite idea, is an innocent villain who has no clue what he's doing and they treat him/her like a bomb even though it acts like a child

I really want to see the Smooze from the first generation of mlp. That would be kinda awesome. Star swirl as a villain would be interesting as well.

Or any non-pony like character. When I first heard the name king sombra and there wasn't much information about him, I had this concept of king sombra being a corrupt lion king.

He's already been there 

I had a theory once about that. Just connect the dots:

Who can already travel in time to show Twilight some flashbacks?

Who can appear and disappear out of nowhere in a flash of five-pointed stars?

Who lived already 1000 years ago and knew both Princesses very well?

Who didn't have any friends before?

Who wears a white goaty beard?

Who looks like a hybrid of several different creatures, as if he were a result of experimenting with, I don't know, the omniomorphic spell?

I like villains which are plausible: They don't just want to dominate the world or destroy the main hero from no reason. I like villains similar to Discord, who can plan thousands of years ahead, good strategists, which can operate from shadows unrecognized by anyone and manipulating them all like pawns on a checkerboard. I like villains who once were normal people (or ponies in this case), but something happened that put them on the wrong tracks. When their motives are substantial and logical, and come out of some inner dilemmas or problems. When they have difficult backstory. That's why Discord is my favorite villain from MLP. But most villains (I mean these "big bosses", not some minor ones like Diamond Dogs or Gilda, which are more antagonists than villains) meet these criteria, which is why this show is so special to me. I like to know what's behind their bad decisions, why did they choose to be the bad guys and what they want to achieve this way.

Why turning into it? Well, the best I can do is paste a fragment of my personal head canon backstory here. Just a tad, because it's still work in progress (I try to sort out all these events from 1000 years ago and around). Here it is:

The Royal Conjurer

 

Starswirl learned very fast, which didn't go unnoticed: two of the Alicorns which have stayed on Earth -- Princes Celestia and Princess Luna -- have noticed that he has a unique talent to Unicorn Magic, and they made him their first protégé. They gave him a tower for his own needs, with an astronomical observatory on top, and an unlimited access to the royal library. Princesses knew about the degradation of Magic too, so they were putting much hope in their new protégé. They hoped that one day he will succeed at restoring the forgotten knowledge.

 

Development

 

In the beginning, he's been doing very well. He studied Magic very hard, and learned very fast. But this required a lot of time and work, so he rarely came out from his laboratory. He was spending whole days and nights there, on studying ancient scrolls and making experiments with Magic. He grew a long beard, so ponies started to call him Starswirl the Bearded.

 

He didn't want to be distracted. He used to wear a costume with bells attached to it, to let everyone in his vicinity know that he's coming and get off of his way. He was very angry if someone stood on his way when he rushed through the corridors. Meeting him there would be a shocking experience indeed: several unfortunate ponies has been severely hurt by his electricity spells.

 

So ponies started to fear him and avoid him, and he avoided everypony else. The only ponies which he allowed to talk with him, were the Princesses (since if he wouldn't talk with them too, they would kick him out from their castle and his career as a court magician would be over). He especially was in good relations with Luna, since they both were very interested in the darker side of Magic. But besides that, he didn't have any other friends, and he said that he doesn't need them. But this didn't serve him good. As time passed, he became bitter and over-obsessed with Dark Powers.

 

Boredom

 

Up to this point, he already restored much of the knowledge about both Bright and Dark Magic, and learned to balance these opposites, which allowed him to cast very powerful spells. But this started to become boring for him quick. To make some fun (which he didn't have much after all, sitting there in his lab), he started experimenting with introducing some deliberate imbalances in these opposite sides of Magic. And so he invented Chaos Magic.

 

Omnimorphic spell

 

One of the first spells he invented that time, was the "omniomorphic spell". It allowed him to modify the shapes of different objects and even transform them to something else. He started transforming chairs into tables, tables into beds, and beds into chairs. This became his new favorite fun, and he used it to prank the Princesses many times. They were quite enjoying it, since they had a good sense of humor.

 

But when he started making experiments with living creatures, things started to become less funny to others than Starswirl himself. One day he turned a bird into a frog, and then the frog into an orange. Luna tried to warn him that such experiments don't lead to anything good. But he didn't seem to take her seriously.

 

He soon started to experiment on the animals in the nearby Everfree Forest, making more and more bizarre hybrids of different animals. As time passed, the Everfree Forest has turned into his personal playground, full of strange and dangerous creatures, not so friendly any more (since they were very angry from what he has done to them).

 

Transformations

 

But it didn't end there. Soon he realized that he can cast the omniomorphic spell upon himself too, and so he started making experiments with his own body and "improving" it in different ways. He wanted to try with something easy and less intrusive first, so he conjured up a second horn for him. He quickly noticed that it has doubled his magical powers, making him even more powerful. Then, he desired to have some Dragon features, so he made himself a Dragon tail and Dragon wings. And he very liked his new form, which allowed him to fly like Pegasi, and swipe his tail around as Dragons do. So he continued to "improve" his body. Several transformations later he didn't resemble a Pony anymore: he called the new species he become himself... a Draconequus :-> {And now I guess that I don't need to explain you any further who has he become ;-J }

 

Seizure

 

The Princesses have tried to reason with him and convince him to stop these experiments before it will bring some greater trouble to all of them, but he didn't listen to them. He knew that he already has enough power to stand up against the Princesses and that they don't have much power over him anymore.

 

As soon as he realized that, he exiled the Princesses from their own castle and took their place on their throne! Then he started turning the lives of Ponies from all surrounding countries into a nightmare, wrecking his chaos upon them. He called himself a Master of Chaos and Disharmony, which he considered to be beautiful due to its oddity and being out-of-the-box. From this very reason, other ponies started to refer to him as Discord, which means Disharmony.

 

We can';t have another Dr. Doof XD

Agreed. But he could benefit from having some interesting time-traveling opponent ;> Someone you cannot escape even through timespace ;-J

Volt: Well, actually this story was supposed only to serve as a backstory for the events I want to describe, since these events are the outcomes of the very distant past, when the Ancient Alicorns put their hooves on the Earth's surface for the first time. They brought with them some magical artifact which contained all their knowledge about Magic. It was supposed to be a book, the Almighty Almanac of All Alicorn Magic.

 

Actually I was very surprised when I saw the ending of Season 4's two-parter, because it nearly mirrors my ideas. Well, nearly, because in my story, this artifact has been split into six separate parts, each of them hidden in a different place, and one of them was supposed to be the Old Castle of the Princesses in the Everfree Forest; and in the show we see one artifact with six keyholes. Looks like I need to start wearing a tinfoil hat 

 

Aaanyhoof... I try to keep as close to the original show's canon (reverse-engineered) as possible, that's why I wrote this backstory. But I also filled up many gaps with my own ideas, simply "exploring" these events in my imagination (alas with no white potion at hand  ), and that's how it came out.

 

In this post I revealed some other part of this backstory, about the arrival of Ancient Alicorns.

 

Hmm... But now when I think of it, maybe I should really make a separate fanfic from this? The same base can be used to build many different houses.
